As time passed day by day, more and more people gathered in the open space outside the safe house. Every day, quite a few would come up from the foot of South Mountain. Those who were severely symptomatic often died within a day or two; however, there were no corpses to be seen in the clearing now.
Thinking about it, it wasn't surprising. The edible food on Dragon Ridge Mountain had basically been consumed, and even the bark of the few willow trees by the edge of the clearing had been stripped bare. In such circumstances, if they didn't eat those things, they could only wait to starve to death.
The people who were still alive had also stopped gathering near the safe house. Ever since the last failed attempt to dig a tunnel, many were unwilling to approach that place again. Instead, they moved to the northern side of the clearing, staying not far from where the villagers were.
Watching these outsiders wandering around the tents, Wang Fugui felt a vague sense of unease in his heart. If their numbers continued to increase, they might pose a threat to us.
That morning, Zhao Cuihua stepped out of her tent, preparing to fetch some water from the stream on the mountain with her water scoop. However, she hadn't walked far when she was blocked by two tall men.
These two men had a rough appearance, with greenish tattoos visible on their arms. One of them grinned wickedly and spoke first: "Hey girl, come over and have some fun with us brothers."
After he finished speaking, the other man chimed in: "Yeah, we won't be alive much longer on this mountain anyway; we might as well enjoy ourselves while we can."
These two men had arrived at Dragon Ridge Mountain a week ago. After realizing they couldn't break into the safe house, they came to where the villagers were gathering in the northern part of the clearing. While they were loitering at the edge of the clearing, they spotted Zhao Cuihua coming out of her tent.
As a rural woman, Zhao Cuihua wasn't particularly beautiful but had a decent figure. The two men felt a pang of desire upon seeing her and decided to approach her together.
Zhao Cuihua sensed their ill intentions and turned to leave. But just as she took two steps away, she suddenly felt someone gripping her arm tightly.
In a panic, Zhao Cuihua shouted towards the nearby tent: "Dad, come here quickly!"
Because it was so close, Zhao DabaO inside the tent heard his daughter's cry.
He opened a small gap in the tent flap and squinted to check the situation outside. Zhao DabaO saw that his daughter was being held by the arms by two thuggish-looking men.
He quickly turned his head and shouted to the other three men from the Zhao Family inside the tent, "Grab a knife and come out with me!"
The three men, who were relatives of Zhao DabaO, immediately picked up the kitchen knives from the ground and rushed out of the tent with him.
Seeing four men charging towards them with knives, the two thugs realized they were outmatched and hurriedly released Zhao Cuihua, turning to flee without looking back.
Wang Fugui witnessed this scene unfold and approached Zhao DabaO, asking, "Old Zhao, what were those two doing? Why did you get into a fight with them?"
Zhao DabaO shook his head helplessly and explained to Wang Fugui, "They were trying to bully my daughter, so I called my family to chase them off."
Wang Fugui lowered his head, deep in thought.
