As they opened the door, Ma Zhibiao and Lu Xiaoran peered inside, finding the living room empty, devoid of any presence. The two of them held their machetes tightly and cautiously stepped into the house.
Just as they approached the corner of the living room, ready to enter the kitchen, a sneaky man suddenly rushed out from within. He wielded a broom over a meter long, with a fruit knife secured at its end by strips of cloth. This makeshift weapon transformed the broom into a simple spear.
The man had already heard the noise when Lu Xiaoran and Ma Zhibiao crashed through the door, prompting him to prepare his weapon and lie in wait around the kitchen corner. The broom was longer than the machete, and he swung it desperately, the fruit knife slicing through the air with deadly precision, narrowly missing both of them several times. If he got just a bit closer, he could easily cut through their flesh.
Seeing this, Ma Zhibiao quickly dodged back, his body momentarily suspended in mid-air. Meanwhile, Lu Xiaoran used his machete to block the broom's attacks while steadily retreating toward the entrance. He hesitated, contemplating whether to use his ability to eliminate this man instantly. If he did so now, Ma Zhibiao would undoubtedly notice.
If Ma Zhibiao saw him use his ability, Lu Xiaoran would have no choice but to silence him as well. However, that would raise suspicions about him with Zhang Kaiwen. Three other ability users had already died on their first day after teaming up with him. If Ma Zhibiao also fell now, it would make him far too suspicious.
Just as Lu Xiaoran wrestled with his dilemma, a gunshot rang out from above. The man holding the broom staggered and collapsed to the ground. Lu Xiaoran turned to see Ma Zhibiao holding a handgun, smoke still curling from its muzzle. It was clear that he had just shot and killed the man.
Lu Xiaoran couldn't believe that Ma Zhibiao was actually armed with a gun. He pondered the implications of Zhang Kaiwen recruiting these Ability users. Each of them had been assigned a machete and a dagger, but no one had received a handgun. Lu Xiaoran speculated that Zhang Kaiwen would only hand guns to those he could trust.
Now that Ma Zhibiao had a gun in his possession, it clearly indicated a close relationship between him and Zhang Kaiwen. It seemed that Zhang Kaiwen intended to monitor Lu Xiaoran by sending someone like Ma Zhibiao to team up with him.
When he had stepped back earlier, he hadn't used his Ability, so logically, Ma Zhibiao shouldn't have noticed anything unusual. At that moment, Ma Zhibiao slowly descended from the air and turned to Lu Xiaoran, saying, "I've taken care of that man. Let's head to the kitchen together and look for supplies."
Lu Xiaoran nodded in response, and the two of them entered the kitchen, one after the other.
