Lu Xiaoran felt a slight sweat on his forehead as he contemplated the situation. The power of that light was extraordinary; if he were hit, the consequences would be severe. It was best to retreat for now.
The enemy was hidden in the pale yellow gas, and Lu Xiaoran had no idea how many of them there were. Moreover, their weapon that could emit light seemed incredibly powerful. He decided against confronting them directly and chose to withdraw temporarily.
In an instant, Lu Xiaoran's figure flickered as he shot up into the air, soaring several dozen meters high. Having replicated his Flight Ability multiple times, his speed was astonishing. In the blink of an eye, he left the research institute behind and flew eastward.
As he flew through the sky, Lu Xiaoran glanced back and saw that the enemies had not managed to catch up with him. After firing a few more beams into the sky, they fell silent.
He let out a sigh of relief, thinking to himself that it seemed he didn't have to worry about being pursued for the time being. He still wondered about the identities of those mysterious foes.
After flying for about ten minutes, Lu Xiaoran spotted a tall mountain standing on the horizon. Clearly, it was Fog Mountain, where he had previously departed from.
Was there still a need to return to the sanctuary? He pondered this in his mind. He had already copied all the abilities of those in the sanctuary, so logically, he had no reason to go back. However, the unknown enemies from earlier still made him uneasy.
The powerful light weapons they wielded were extremely dangerous. Lu Xiaoran sensed that this group was not ordinary. If they continued to pursue him, he would be at a disadvantage alone.
Returning to the sanctuary would allow him to use the thirty or so Ability users there as cannon fodder to draw fire away from him. This way, whether he chose to confront those enemies head-on or escape amidst the chaos, it would certainly be easier than facing them alone.
Since he could disguise himself as Zhang Kaiwen now, it made sense to return to the sanctuary and manipulate those people under his guise.
Having made up his mind, Lu Xiaoran flew toward Fog Mountain Sanctuary.
At that moment, on the street outside Yiren Research Institute, a car slowly drove away from the entrance of the institute and continued down the road.
In the back seat of the car sat a young man, looking dejected as he held his phone and dialed a number.
"Boss, we didn't complete the mission. That kid has some sort of flight ability. Just when we were about to destroy the entire building of the research institute, he flew out of the window on the upper floor and disappeared."
There was a moment of silence on the other end of the line before a deep voice responded, "Alright, just come back for now."
After agreeing a few times, the young man finally hung up the phone.
That afternoon, in a spacious conference room, a man wearing a brown-gray sweatshirt pushed open the door and walked inside.
As he took his seat, everyone at the table turned their attention toward him.
"Boss, you said there was only one person attacking the Yiren Research Institute. Is that really true?"
