Old Vine felt a sense of urgency inside, but still urged everyone on.
Qi Xiaomian instructed Sang Qingxiao to dismount the carriage first, and together with Misha, they carefully placed Black General onto a stretcher and carried him out. He didn’t forget to add, “Qi Shuo, go to the residence and fetch some life-saving herbs. Qilang, you go to the palace to greet Zhou General. Tell him I’m unavailable.”
“Sir, that doesn’t seem appropriate,” Qilang replied.
“If His Majesty asks you, just tell him the truth.”
Sang Qingxiao, protecting the two younger ones, followed behind them and asked, “You were supposed to pick up Zhou Yunjin, right?”
There should be some ceremony for a high-ranking official returning to court. His Majesty thought that since I have a similar experience and age as him, we would have common ground, so he agreed with the Zhou family’s suggestion and let me host this.
“Ha, the Zhou family wants to use you as a stepping stone. When you returned that day, there wasn’t much of a spectacle; it was just a meal at my Small Tavern.”
In Jingjing City, most families value these things. After all, Zhou Yunjin has merits, so His Majesty naturally has to give him some face. I don’t care about such things; in fact, I find them troublesome, which is why I returned to court early.
“It seems you two are not of the same kind.”
“Even without Black General, I can’t get too close to him. Being in charge of The Office of Censors, it’s good enough for me to be a solitary minister.”
“You’re quite clear-headed.”
Sang Qingxiao led them into the front courtyard, toward her adjacent boudoir.
After Misha and Qi Xiaomian settled Black General, they retreated with Sang Qingxiao into the outer Zheng Garden, leaving Old Vine busy inside.
“Do you need me to call the imperial physician? Or perhaps His Majesty has a veterinarian?” Qi Xiaomian offered help.
“No, Old Vine can handle it on his own.”
“This Old Vine of yours looks somewhat familiar.”
“That shouldn’t be possible; it hasn’t been to the back courtyard during your visits.”
“I must not be mistaken. Recently, the Warriors have often felt like they were being spied on. I paid special attention to this and discovered some vines appearing in hidden corners of the walls—sometimes long, sometimes short—changing positions and moving. Hmph, today it seems I’ve spotted the main one.”
Misha couldn’t help but chuckle softly. “Wasn’t that when the Warriors felt they were being spied on while taking a bath?”
“Well, I didn’t ask further. What about you? Have you been spied on too?”
Misha tacitly agreed.
“How embarrassing! To be peeking next door and getting caught multiple times! The neighbors are all spies from The Office of Censors, yet they act so brazenly without restraint.”
In truth, Old Vine meant no harm; it was just bored with life. Initially, it only eavesdropped on neighbors for amusement but later developed several avatars across this continent specifically to gather such entertainment for itself.
Sang Qingxiao explained somewhat awkwardly that Old Rascal meant no harm.
Qi Xiaomian nodded, "This is my first time visiting your front yard. It's arranged in a way that's both lively and tranquil, with beautiful scenery at every turn. It's quite interesting."
"It's all thanks to Old Vine," Sang Qingxiao replied.
"Oh? It has such skills? Then could I ask it to plant some Creeping Grass in my yard as well? No need for anything so elaborate; just a few in the corners would suffice to prevent the place from feeling too empty."
"These are not just any Creeping Grass," Qi Xiaomian raised an eyebrow. "Could it be that there are spirits involved? Miss Sang, how many spirits do you have in your yard?"
In the back yard, there were a group of Mountain Spirits, and in the front yard, even more Creeping Grass spirits of various kinds, which were ultimately a bit too conspicuous.
"What's wrong? Does the Court have regulations requiring a count of them here?"
"It's purely out of curiosity. Besides, with so many, it wouldn't affect the city's security, would it?"
"Don't worry. Although there are many, there aren't many high-ranking ones, and they are all obedient."
In Jingjing City, it wasn't just the Supervisory Office that patrolled secretly every day; the young lady was also being watched by various factions. If someone were to pass by and notice something unusual, it could pose a danger to her.
