For three years of mourning, the Zhao Family faced a significant threat with the disappearance of their records. It was imperative that they handle the mourning process swiftly; if anything were to happen, the Zhao Family could flee from Shanxia Village to the border or even abroad for refuge.
Thinking of this, the Zhao Family Eldest was anxious. "I need to hurry to the palace to report the death; I ask the Marquis to clear the way."
"Let me send someone to handle the mourning affairs," replied the Marquis. "I will accompany Zhao Daren to Zhao Manor to see what assistance we can provide."
The Zhao Family Eldest was unwilling. His father had instructed him before his passing to keep everything simple regarding the funeral arrangements. Everything necessary had already been prepared before his arrival, so there was no need to trouble the Marquis.
"This is a matter that must be attended to; we should pay our respects. Zhao Daren, please lead the way."
The Yongxin Marquis insisted on going; it was a gesture of goodwill, and the Zhao Family Eldest could not refuse, so he led them to Zhao Manor.
At the entrance, they encountered Minister Ming and her son, who had come upon hearing the news. The Old Madam was in tears, nearly collapsing, while Lady Mingxiang supported her.
Taking advantage of a moment when the Old Madam and Zhao Family Eldest were crying together, Yongxin Marquis exchanged glances with Mingze.
It would be best for Minister Ming to avoid involvement in Zhao Family matters.
"What do you mean by that?" asked the Marquis.
"The Zhao Family is in trouble; there's no escaping it. The Ming Residence may very well be implicated."
That evening, after sending Sang Qingxiao back to Small Tavern, Qi Xiaomian knocked on the door of Chi Mansion late at night. Unlike his friendly conversation with Chi Chen'an, he interrogated Zhao Qing as if he were a suspect, with Chi Family father and son accompanying him.
Being clever individuals, they quickly discerned several significant issues.
Early the next morning, Qi Xiaomian and Chi Yan entered the palace and discussed matters concerning Shanxia Village with Xuande Emperor over breakfast. Just after finishing their meal, Qi Shuo arrived with news: Zhao Guotai had died.
After a moment of silence, Xuande Emperor entrusted all matters related to this incident to Qi Xiaomian and included Chi Chen'an in his plans.
Mingze understood that Qi Xiaomian would not disclose any further information. Grateful yet composed, he recognized that filial piety took precedence; he still needed to participate in the mourning. He glanced at his mother, who was wailing uncontrollably, sighed inwardly, and resolved to be more cautious in his words and actions.
At this moment, Qi Xiaomian had grasped Zhao Family Eldest's arm. "Where did your father pass away? May I take a look?"
"He has already been examined by a physician. My father died from overwork; what does the Marquis wish to see?"
"Is there truly no doubt about the cause of death in the Zhao Family?"
Madam Ming became agitated upon hearing this. "What do you mean? Are you implying my elder brother was murdered?"
"Be quiet!"
Zhao Family Eldest grew more anxious; they could not pursue any investigation into their father's death. His outburst startled Madam Ming into silence.
As the youngest daughter of Zhao Tuo and the beloved little sister of Zhao Guotai, Old Madam was highly cherished in the Zhao Family. When had she ever been yelled at like this?!
After the initial shock, anger surged within her. Just as she was about to scold her own nephew, Mingze stepped in and pulled her aside, whispering a few threatening words in her ear. Reluctantly, Old Madam swallowed her indignation, but the more she held it in, the more aggrieved she felt, and her cries grew louder.
Yet, no one present had the heart to comfort her.
The Zhao Family Eldest responded cautiously once again to Qi Xiaomian. "My father indeed passed away from overwork. The physician who has worked in our family for many years would not make a mistake. Not disturbing the deceased is the greatest respect for both the departed and their family. If Yongxin Marquis has come to pay respects, the Zhao Family welcomes you. However, if there are other intentions, please consider the wishes of the deceased."
