"How much?" 0
"Just a few boxes." 0
"How many exactly?" 0
"They're all in the storage." 0
"Fine, I'll send someone to search later." 0

Zhe asked again, "What do you know about Shanxia Village?" 0
"Shanxia Village?" Old Madam thought for a moment, her expression darkening with disdain. "Why bring up that remote place?" 0

Zhe forced a smile. "How can we not mention it? Everyone's talking about it outside." 0
Old Madam frowned. "That was more than a decade ago. I wasn't even born then, and I've never been to that Shanxia Village. Zhe, could it be that someone is using the Zhao Family's ancestral home to attack your background?" 0

"If that were the case, it wouldn't be so bad!" Zhe continued to probe. "The impression the Zhao Family gives to the outside world is one of integrity and honesty. With so much gold sent here, haven't you ever wondered where it came from?" 0

"What’s there to question? Every family has some hidden assets, right? Besides, your reputation isn't greedy either. But you've accepted gifts from some families, haven’t you?" 0

Seeing her son's face darken further, Old Madam grew anxious. "Zhe, what exactly happened? The Zhao Family are all officials; they easily offend people. Their imprisonment is probably for this reason. If you can help, please do!" 0

"Help? How can I help? Mining gold without permission is equivalent to treason, punishable by death! Such a grave crime—how can you expect me to assist?" 0

Gold... mining... 0
Old Madam realized the seriousness of the situation and was left speechless in fear. 0

Zhe saw that he couldn't extract any more information and began to pace away. Hearing hurried footsteps behind him, he stopped and turned around. 0
Zhu Zhu grabbed his hand. "Master Xiang, will our family... will our family also..." 0

Zhe gently patted her trembling hand. "I'm here." 0
"Master Xiang, if something really happens, I don't mind, but you must find a way to protect the two children!" 0

"Don't worry. Just take care of things at home. Keep a close eye on Old Madam; especially don't let her contact the Zhao Family or go out." 0
"But I..." 0

"In these extraordinary times, think of it as being for the sake of the two children. Understand?" 0

Old Madam was given a bowl of calming soup prepared with ample ingredients by her daughter-in-law. 0

The calming soup did little to soothe Old Madam, who was plagued by nightmares that jolted her awake in the middle of the night. Thirsty and wanting someone to attend to her, she found herself unable to call out due to Riri's wailing and her own hoarse, painful throat, which made it difficult to produce any sound. 0

She considered getting up to find water herself, but her awakening was merely a result of fear; the effects of the calming soup still lingered, leaving her limbs weak. When her feet touched the ground, she lost her balance and nearly fell, only to be caught by someone. 0

Who was this person with such poor timing? Why hadn’t they come sooner to assist her? 0

Unable to speak, Old Madam attempted to convey her displeasure with a glare. However, when she turned her head, she was met with a stranger's face. 0

"Thirsty? Here, let me give you some water," the stranger said as a large bowl appeared at Old Madam's lips. Caught off guard, she ended up swallowing a mouthful of the bitter and scalding liquid before hastily spitting it back into the bowl. 0
