Li Cu watched her from behind and couldn't help but comment, transforming into Black Cat as she blended into the night. "You all take your time; I'll lead the way and check things out first."
The others indeed slowed down their pace. Misha, in an empty street, pulled out a carriage from thin air, placing three children inside to rest while she leisurely drove the carriage along.
Night patrols were everywhere, and they happened to encounter another group, which could be considered fate.
Xu noticed them with some surprise. "What are you doing still in the city? Driving a carriage at night—are you planning to leave the city? The gates of Meizhou City don't open at night without special circumstances."
Misha smiled and explained, "We were handling some matters in the city today and lost track of time. We planned to stay at Zhang Residence for another night, but just as we reached the entrance, we saw Miss Zhang heading out again."
Worried yet unwilling to disturb Miss Zhang, they decided to follow her from a distance, hoping to lend a hand if anything went awry.
"Since I know about this situation now, I'll take care of it," Xu said confidently. "You all don’t worry; just hurry back to Zhang Residence."
Misha insisted, "It doesn't really matter whether we go back or not. If that thing wants to catch us, it will strike no matter where we are."
Seeing that they couldn't be persuaded otherwise, Xu gathered his people and walked alongside Sang Qingxiao and the others while chatting.
Miss Zhang's nightly route was roughly the same: she walked from the east side of the city toward the west, stopping by City God Temple to pay her respects before wandering aimlessly through the city. Sometimes she would even absentmindedly walk into dead ends.
"City God Temple? Observing?" Misha chatted casually. "When we first entered the city, an innkeeper named Wang Zhanggui suggested we check out a place to stay."
"Wang Zhanggui? You’re lucky; he runs his business fairly and is quite shrewd. His suggestion is pretty good; there have been others who borrowed a place to stay there and were taken in."
Misha continued probing for information. "Did Wang Zhanggui mention if the temple leaders have any means? When that thing appears, do they help out? What’s the outcome?"
Xu shook his head. "Like us, they can't get close."
As they spoke, they could already see City God Temple in the distance. Unlike other residences, City God Temple and its observatory were brightly lit throughout the night, illuminating the surrounding area.
Zhang Linglong followed Xu's words and bowed several times outside City God Temple and its observatory before circling around to stand quietly under a towering archway for a moment.
The arch was backlit, making it difficult for them to see what kind of arch it was, so they asked Xu.
"Chastity Arch."
"Chastity Arch?!"
After escaping exile, Sang Qingxiao had traveled through many states but had never seen a Chastity Arch in person before; this was her first encounter with something she had only read about in history books.
Such moralistic constructs seemed like honorable means but ultimately shackled women for life.
Sang Qingxiao felt an intense aversion toward it. "I've traveled through so many states and counties; this is truly my first time seeing such a thing! Meizhou City still venerates this nonsense?"
Ignoring the gazes of others, she casually tossed a light talisman into the air, instantly illuminating the nearby sky. Sang Qingxiao could now see clearly that there was not just one Chastity Arch; there were more than a dozen of them scattered around, both large and small!
Sang Qingxiao's mood worsened. She spoke in a strange tone, "Could there possibly be a Chastity Pavilion nearby, holding a number of widowed women?"
