Zhang Linglong pushed the book back to its original place, feeling disgusted.
"Let's continue talking about Chastity Tower," she said.
Zhang Linglong frowned. There wasn't much to say, really. After hearing her sister's voice, regardless of whether it was genuine or had ulterior motives, it ultimately revealed the truth to her. She thought about gathering more information about her sister, wondering what else she could do for her. Then she learned about the struggles of the women in the building. As a woman herself with some wealth, she felt compelled to lend a hand, considering it a way to accumulate virtue for the child in her womb.
But was that all there was to it?
Zhang Linglong was honest; one must see people when alive and see their corpses when dead. If he didn't show up soon, the stalemate with the Chen Family would persist indefinitely. If he appeared, even if just as a corpse, she could find a way to make something out of it. Yet, she searched throughout the city and its surroundings but found no trace of him.
From her sister's voice, she connected it to Chastity Tower. Deep down, she suspected that the man's disappearance might be related to Chastity Tower, so she paid extra attention to it.
What was she focusing on?
Zhang Linglong shook her head in regret and exhaustion. The women inside had never come out, and she had investigated everyone who had interacted with them—none were suspicious. They hadn't come out, perhaps because that door was hardly bigger than a dog hole and wasn't the only entrance or exit.
"How could that be?" Zhang Linglong exclaimed in surprise.
Sang Qingxiao's gaze shifted to a figure approaching in the distance, smiling. "Here they come."
As soon as she finished speaking, a shadow rushed over from afar, calling out to her, "Xiaoxiao! Xiaoxiao! There are Evil Spirits!"
Sang Qingxiao caught her and held her close, murmuring, "You've worked hard."
"Not hard at all," Li Cu replied as she jumped onto the table. After gulping down some water, she continued, "I didn't see anything yesterday, but today Evil Spirits appeared—a red Xiao Ye flower in a corner. The women who disappeared last night were secretly using their blood to nourish it, leaving it covered in a bloody scent. It's hard to tell whether it's an Evil Spirit or something else entirely."
"Nourishing it with blood?"
Sang Qingxiao suspected that this thing was likely demonic.
"Then let's go check it out tonight!"
"Can I come along?" Zhang Linglong asked while keeping her eyes fixed on Li Cu. A talking cat?
"I can transform into a human too!"
Once Zhang Linglong saw Li Cu transform into a woman she had encountered before, she looked at Sang Qingxiao with envy. Could extraordinary women walk among men just like men did? How extraordinary would she need to be to stand shoulder to shoulder with them like a lady?
I don't know how to respond to you. Having dreams is good, but one must also consider reality. Take it step by step and focus on living your own life well.
In a world where men hold the power, Sang Qingxiao cannot paint a grand picture for Zhang Linglong, irresponsibly telling her that as long as she keeps moving forward, she will one day stand side by side with men. Giving her too much hope would only harm her, simply because the times are like this.
Even with Sang Qingxiao's unique abilities, which have been spread through the Demon Catching Realm, there are still those who disdain her presence. There are certainly many who secretly speculate and slander her behind her back.
Having come from an era of gender equality, Sang Qingxiao possesses a strong resilience to such malice, so she remains unfazed. But what about Zhang Linglong? She is likely unable to withstand such negativity.
