Yong Huai Xin felt a chill run down his spine as he realized the implications of the Emperor's intentions. The Emperor, despite being generally easygoing, was still a decisive Monarch when it came to matters of life and death. It seemed he would have to be more cautious in their future interactions.
He glanced at Qin Junxiang, who appeared unfazed. Surely, he had guessed the Emperor's plans as well; after all, those of royal blood were often the most ruthless and cold-hearted.
Ling Qian lay on the bed, pretending to be asleep. The room was somewhat disheveled, and the servants attending to her seemed less diligent than before. When she heard footsteps approaching, she remained perfectly still, barely breathing, her appearance resembling that of a corpse.
Ling Qian smirked inwardly; it seemed there were outsiders present, and she had to put on an act. "I'm here to discuss serious matters with you," she said.
Still keeping her eyes closed, she deftly tossed a small wooden box from the bedside into Qin Junxiang's arms. "If it's gone, it's gone. If you don't believe me, check for yourself. If you think I'm hiding something, feel free to search this room."
Hearing the sound of the box opening confirmed her suspicions about his distrust. "Qin Junxiang, do you even have a brain? Look at me! If I had it, would I be hiding it instead of using it to save my own life?"
"It disappeared three days ago! I told you then! I've done everything I could, but it's just gone!"
"I can have someone from Fuzhou look for it; just tell me where it was."
"Qin Junxiang, what you have in front of you is a demon core! A Whale Demon’s core! I spent so much time and effort just to acquire these few!"
"Whale Demons dwell in the deep sea; they are hard to find. Even if you have extraordinary abilities, can you retrieve one in such a short time to save our lives?"
At this point, she began to laugh maniacally. "Retribution! Retribution! Look at him—so foolish! I never thought he could be so heartless. The curse I uttered that day—I thought it was just idle talk—yet it seems many of those words have come true."
"I regret not killing him first! I should have pretended he was still alive and deceived his kin. If I had done that, he wouldn't have been able to deliver such a fatal blow!"
Yong Huai felt anger boiling within him upon hearing her unrepentant words. Noticing Li Butler trembling beside him made him realize that Li's life was in danger after hearing such secretive remarks.
His gaze fell on Li Butler's waist pouch. Just days ago, Ling Qian spoke in veiled terms about their past; could it be that the effects of the potion were taking hold so quickly?
Suddenly, a smile broke out on her face as she continued her mad laughter without regard for anyone else around her. "I don’t regret killing him; I just feel a twinge of sorrow. But can you blame me? He was a demon—how could a human and a demon ever be together?"
"I invested in our relationship too; he was happy because of me for so long. Is it wrong for me to want some return?"
