Looking outside, the sky was getting darker, and the rain continued to fall in a hazy mist. There was still no sign of A Si in the city.
Suddenly, the sound of hurried footsteps approached. Sang Qingxiao stepped out of the house just in time to see Qilang rushing over. He bypassed the Guard Captain and came directly to report to Sang Qingxiao.
"Miss, something has happened at Ling Manor. After the incident with the Second Prince, His Majesty immediately ordered a lockdown around Ling Manor. It has been several hours since the incident, and there has been no news or movement from anywhere. The Marquis was worried and sent me out to check."
The guards outside Ling Manor remained vigilant, and they reported that everything seemed normal. Just as I was about to turn away, a sense of unease gripped me. I walked around the outer wall of Ling Manor for a while, feeling that the silence was a bit too excessive.
With my keen hearing from years of training, I could still hear faint breathing sounds despite everyone inside being silenced. Yet, there was no other sound at all.
Feeling something was off, I climbed over the wall and entered, only to discover that there was not a single living soul inside Ling Manor. It was eerily quiet; the bodies had long since gone cold.
"What did you say?! Say it again! Who is dead?!"
Qilang's pants were grabbed by someone without needing to look down; he knew it must be Ling Jiudao. The man shouted frantically several times, his demeanor becoming increasingly frantic.
Qilang kicked his leg away from Ling Jiudao's grasp. "Ling Yuan Shou, you heard me right—it's your Ling Family members who are dead. I came here to deliver the news."
"You don't need to worry about those bodies being unattended; the Capital of Jingzhao has already dispatched people. That new coroner has quite a reputation and will surely give you an explanation. Just stay calm; don't scare yourself too much—His Majesty is still waiting to ask you questions."
Ling Jiudao kept shouting that he didn't believe it—that it couldn't be true—that it was all a lie.
Qilang leaned down and whispered, "Ling Yuan Shou, I've learned some investigative techniques while at The Office of Censors. When I discovered the tragedy, I thoroughly examined Ling Manor; nothing valuable was missing—except for one thing: it seems they were after the Medicine Catalyst."
"Ling Yuan Shou, what is so special about this Medicine Catalyst? Why would someone hate you enough to kill over a hundred people in your household?"
"Isn't this next one you?"
"Or perhaps someone who has come into contact with or used the Medicine Catalyst?"
"Medicine Catalyst? Is it because of the Medicine Catalyst? But I didn't handle it; it was all Ling Qian's doing."
"Oh dear, isn't that just it? Consort of the Second Prince—wasn't she involved?"
Under Qilang's guidance, this line of thought made Ling Jiudao realize he was in grave danger. His entire body trembled as he instinctively crawled toward Yong Huai.
He shouted some words; apart from pleading for help, he almost let slip about the Whale Demon.
Qilang covered his mouth and pulled him back by his collar, preventing him from crawling around. With another forceful tug, he threw him toward the Captain of the Guards.
"His Majesty wants to see him; this man needs to be sent to the palace quickly. Send more people to prevent any ambush along the way. I'll remind you again—he knows too much; the more he knows, the faster he'll die. You should know how to handle this."
The Captain of the Guards thanked him and tore a strip of cloth from his clothing to tightly gag Ling Jiudao.
"I'll personally escort him," said the Captain of the Guards as he glanced at Qilang and then at Sang Qingxiao. "I'll return as soon as possible. In the meantime, leave someone here to follow your orders. Please make sure to protect the Second Prince!"
Both matters were of utmost importance. Qilang had pushed the responsibility onto him, which meant he had received orders and could choose not to return. The Guard Captain had no choice but to leave his post and run an errand.
Not long after the Guard Captain left, Sang Qingxiao felt a faint vibration underfoot, rhythmic in nature.
This sensation reminded Sang Qingxiao that the entire city had been searched thoroughly, yet there was still no sign of A Si. Could it be possible that A Si was hiding underground in the Second Prince's Residence?
