Sang Qingxiao turned to Cai Zhuo and said, "This is a remedy from the Southern Mushroom Gatherer. I came across it many years ago; it's just a folk prescription from the countryside. You should consult the Imperial Physicians first before giving it to His Majesty."
Cai Zhuo understood the implication in Sang Qingxiao's words and felt relieved.
The Two Lords, seeing that there was hope for the Emperor's recovery, shifted their attention to the source of the blanket. As Cai Zhuo was in charge of Xuande Emperor's affairs, he was naturally well-informed. After hesitating for a moment in response to the Two Lords' inquiries, he finally revealed, "It was sent by the Empress Dowager. She said she personally stitched it, and His Majesty was pleased with her concern, so he changed to a new blanket that very day."
Shi Yun scoffed, "I haven't heard that the Empress Dowager had such skills."
Coughing interrupted his mockery. Ze coughed violently and added, "The Empress Dowager has a nurturing heart; making a cotton blanket isn't too difficult for her."
Cai Zhuo, however, surprisingly spoke honestly for once, saying, "The Empress Dowager hasn't touched needlework in many years."
Feeling embarrassed by Cai Zhuo's comment, Ze shifted uncomfortably. Shi Yun smirked slightly but quickly returned to his usual cold demeanor.
Cai Zhuo continued, "So the blanket wasn't made by the Empress Dowager herself. The Empress Dowager would never harm His Majesty."
Shi Yun interjected, "Perhaps she was being manipulated by someone else."
He thought to himself about that incompetent woman who always caused trouble!
Cai Zhuo glanced at Qi Xiaomian but did not refute Shi Yun's words. He recalled the time when Yongxin Marquis returned from New State and had a private conversation with His Majesty while he served nearby. The discussion revolved around how the Empress Dowager conspired with the possessed Qi Hao to harm Yongxin Marquis, resulting in many Warriors losing their lives.
His Majesty was furious, but after all, the Empress Dowager was his biological mother, and Qi Hao was her nephew who was possessed by an Evil Spirit. Both of them often appeared right under his nose, yet he could do nothing about it.
As a result, His Majesty felt quite frustrated for some time; he even suspended his daily routine of paying respects to the Empress Dowager.
It took her some time to realize why her son was angry and what had caused it. She continued her daily life as usual until she finally decided to find a blanket after repeated suggestions from those around her, claiming it was one she had sewn herself.
His Majesty naturally knew where the blanket came from but still happily changed into it. Little did he know it was a deadly blanket.
"What are you still doing here?" Shi Yun urged Cai Zhuo. "We can't enter this palace; you need to take the lead. While we still have time before news of His Majesty's illness spreads, hurry and investigate in the Empress Dowager's quarters."
"Leave some people here with me; we'll guard His Majesty," he added.
After Cai Zhuo left, Sang Qingxiao expressed her discomfort and said she wanted to leave the palace.
Shi Yun politely stopped her, saying, "Given His Majesty's current condition, if Miss Sang could stay with us, we would feel more at ease."
Sang Qingxiao replied, "But I'm not at ease! There are too many hidden dangers in this palace. It seems secure on the surface but is riddled with holes everywhere."
"I'm afraid that if I stay any longer, I might get entangled deeper in this mess without realizing when I've offended someone and end up causing a lot of trouble behind the scenes."
