Qi Shuo felt a hint of disappointment and decided to set that question aside. "Now, tell me about the tasks they asked you to do."
With little time, there were only two tasks assigned to me. The first was to create a mechanism that would produce mist to help conceal their movements. As for what they did within the mist, I had no idea, and they wouldn't tell me either.
The second task was to construct the mechanisms within this room. I had become so absorbed in finding a way to climb higher that I lost my original intent and gradually forgot my skills. They were pressing me for results, and since I couldn't guarantee I could complete it in a short time, I had to call on my father for help.
I knew he was stubborn and wouldn't easily compromise, so I threatened him with Liu Cong. Eventually, the task was completed. The underground mechanism conveniently utilized Liu Cong's talents, allowing both sides to benefit.
Qi Shuo began to speak, but Liu Fan interjected. "When I came down here, the tomb already looked like this. I was shocked; it had only been a month since the last inspection."
In just one month, such a vast space had been excavated, connecting two distant tombs. It was no small feat and required a massive workforce. I couldn't fathom how these people moved in and out so freely.
"You must have seen the crows and rats then?" Qi Shuo asked.
Liu Fan paled at the mention of crows. "I really didn't know their purpose. That flock of crows flew over while the mist was present—nearly a hundred lives lost! I became an accomplice without realizing it. When I learned this news, I trembled in fear—Retribution."
"The crows are gone now; what about the rats?" Qi Shuo pressed on.
Liu Fan provided some information. "During an earthquake elsewhere, they actually cursed Xuande Emperor, calling him a foolish ruler who deserved punishment from heaven for the Great Jing Dynasty. Then we discussed how after the earthquake, there might be an outbreak of disease."
Then someone joked about releasing the rats that were supposed to be exterminated to wreak havoc on people. I tried to stop them, but they laughed and said they wanted to test it out—let loose a group of healthy rats and see if an outbreak occurred. If it did, it would mean the emperor lacked virtue and needed to be replaced; this was merely a test.
I wanted to intervene but ultimately failed. I still don't know if those rats posed any threat. If you can catch them, please try to eliminate them.
Another troublesome matter arose, and Qi Shuo suddenly felt exhaustion wash over him. He continued asking, "Now tell me about the mechanisms in this room. You really are bold—daring to create mechanisms that could destroy the Royal Tomb!"
Liu Fan widened his eyes again in shock. "Destroy the Royal Tomb!? I had no idea! My skills are lacking; this mechanism is too complex, and I haven't even seen the blueprints."
They only told me it was similar to the mist-producing mechanism and wouldn’t cause any major disturbances. After Liu Cong took over, I asked him about it once, but he just smiled and said it was fun.
