Sang Jue reached out and gently touched Sang Qingxiao's head. She seemed less resistant now. "Xiaoxiao, on the day you fell off the cliff, your brothers felt guilty for a long time. They cried while setting up a tomb for you."
"And what about you?"
Sang Jue feigned annoyance, tapping Sang Qingxiao's forehead. "What do you think? I deliberately kept my distance for your own good. Too much attention makes you a vulnerability in the eyes of those people. If my concern draws their attention to you, do you think you could escape unscathed?"
Yet you, heartless girl, were so determined to leave. You concealed everything so well beforehand and didn’t pass on a single message afterward. It wasn't until you entered Jingjing City and gained notoriety that I began to suspect your true identity.
This reasoning seemed plausible to Sang Qingxiao. Feeling guilty, she wondered why, if there was a way out, she and her brothers had not escaped death.
Sang Jue explained that the Sang Family, once part of Prince Jing's Residence and a force that shook the entire continent, had all perished. Who would believe such a thing? Even if all evidence were meticulously crafted, many would still question it simply because it was too dazzling.
I am the one most feared, residing in Vulture Ridge, constantly attracting attention from all sides. The surviving members of the Sang Family would be safer that way.
In the past, I was held in high regard; if not a single junior could be protected, people would start to speculate foolishly. Your brothers chose to stay behind willingly; although Vulture Ridge is harsh, it serves as excellent training.
Before coming to see you, I observed other children from the Sang Family. In comparison, they were overly protected and not nearly as resilient as your brothers.
This made me feel some regret; perhaps I should have left more children in Vulture Ridge.
As the moon hung high in the sky, Sang Jue decided it was time to leave but realized she had forgotten something important. "Rest well today; we will drum tomorrow. Are you afraid?"
"What is there to be afraid of?"
Seeing no fear in Sang Qingxiao's eyes eased Sang Jue's worries somewhat. "You’re not afraid of being beaten in front of the palace gates with everyone watching?"
"It won't hurt me; why should I be afraid? My actions are merely a pretext; you've laid so much groundwork behind the scenes that success is inevitable. I just need to wait calmly for that moment."
"But I can't bear to see you humiliated at the palace gates." Sang Jue pulled out a pile of items and arranged them on the stone table. "That's why I brought these for you personally. Once we finish drumming, place them in front of you—no one will dare touch you."
Sang Qingxiao leaned forward in surprise. "Is that... a decree of pardon from Emperor Qin Zhang? The Imperial Sword from the Great Ancestor? A Get Out of Jail Free Card issued by the Great Ancestor? The King’s Whip personally bestowed by the Great Ancestor?"
And what are these?
She picked up several books and discovered they were records of Emperor Qin Zhang's daily activities. There were folded pages within; opening them revealed clear documentation of when and why these items were given.
But!
The Sang Family had these resources, so why did they still find themselves in such a predicament? The Chongjing Emperor acted too swiftly, catching the Sang Family off guard. The deeper reason was that the royal family had offered too many benefits, especially various life-saving items. Not only had Qin Zhang provided them, but subsequent emperors, including the Chongjing Emperor, had done so as well.
Even if each member of the Sang Family received one, there would still be plenty left over. Ha! Qin Zhang claimed it was out of gratitude for the Sang Family's relinquishment of power, feeling guilty and restless in his heart. He wanted to govern Great Jing together with the Sang Family, and these life-saving items were his promise.
Upon reflection, Qin Zhang had dug a deep grave for the Sang Family. It was also our fault for allowing ourselves to be blinded by filth. Even I didn't anticipate that they would strike so quickly and ruthlessly, leaving us no time to use these items to save ourselves.
Yet, they ultimately underestimated the Sang Family's resilience. As long as the Sang bloodline remained, a return was only a matter of time.
