"Father, I have an idea," the daughter said.
"What are you hesitating for? Speak up," he urged.
"I want to recruit Shadow's End as my consort."
Shadow's End exclaimed in disbelief.
But neither of them paid him any mind.
The Great Yu Emperor questioned calmly, "Are you serious? Do you like him?"
"It's not about liking him; it's about suitability."
"Go on," he prompted.
Huayang began to list his merits. "He is loyal to you and would never betray the Pei Imperial Clan. He has no father or brothers, so there won't be any external interference in governance. He has followed you for many years and understands the intricacies of political affairs, while I lack a solid foundation in this area and need his guidance. Historically, hidden guards are well-versed in both strategy and tactics, and especially someone like him, a leader among hidden guards, excels in every aspect. Frankly speaking, disregarding his background, he is the strongest option available to me."
"You have quite an eye for talent," the emperor remarked.
The daughter was unwilling to merely be a ruler who maintained the status quo and pleaded with her father for a chance.
The Great Yu Emperor found her more agreeable today than before. He had already considered having Shadow's End assist in governance. As for his identity, that was not an issue; finding a minister to take on the title of an adopted son would suffice.
"Approved!" he declared.
However, Shadow's End was reluctant and wanted to argue further.
But the father and daughter spoke in unison, "You have no say in this matter!"
The Great Yu Emperor remained resolute and issued an edict that very day, appointing a leader of hidden guards as the Crown Princess's consort. Many court officials criticized him for losing his mind, but the Great Yu Emperor was known for his authoritarian ways and would not easily change his decisions.
The officials then schemed again, questioning whether the Crown Princess should recruit more male consorts.
Huayang was certainly opposed; she wanted to focus on political affairs and had no time for romantic entanglements.
Sang Qingxiao listened to the grand drama unfolding in the Dayu Dynasty and sighed, "Huayang has made a brilliant move here. I wonder if it was her own idea or if someone guided her."
"Qi Xiaomian laughed and said, 'I just mentioned it to her casually.'
'Tsk, you seem quite concerned about her affairs, even managing her potential consort situation,' someone remarked.
'It's not concern, it's precaution,' Qi Xiaomian explained. 'Just in case she runs into trouble, I introduced her to a capable consort.'
The Dayu Hidden Guard was a combination of the Great Jing Dragon Guard and the Office of Censors, wielding power within the palace while controlling the leverage over court officials and public opinion. Despite Shadow's End appearing submissive in front of the Great Yu Emperor, it was actually a formidable character, with methods that rivaled my own. However, they were too sentimental, viewing the Great Yu Emperor as everything and ignoring others.
With the Demon Fetus in hand, Qi Xiaomian had been probing into its inquiries for several days. Seeing him relaxed today, Sang Qingxiao guessed there must have been some progress. She had searched through the Demon Fetus's memories; strangely enough, while it seemed completely devoted to its master behind it, its memories were a chaotic blur. Old Vine speculated that this might be due to its physical state—after all, how much memory could a fetus possess? There was also another possibility: the Demon Fetus might not be intact; perhaps during its creation, its brain had been damaged.
That demon resided within Ginger.
Sang Qingxiao asked curiously, 'How did you determine that?'
Food habits revealed much; the Ginger People had a penchant for a particularly foul-smelling herb that most people found intolerable. They also preferred to eat with their hands. The women of Ginger dressed rather boldly; I had arranged for courtesans to walk past him, but his eyes showed little emotion as if he were used to it. After numerous tests, one coincidence could be dismissed, but multiple coincidences indicated a clear issue.
Sang Qingxiao pressed on, 'Now that we have results, when do we set off?'
'I’ve already sent Shadow's End to greet the Great Yu Emperor. On his territory, especially after receiving such significant benefits, we should still be polite.'
Only half a morning had passed when the Great Yu Emperor responded, 'Let’s go.' His tone was straightforward, a stark contrast to the way he had fumbled around when facing death.
With the message received, they set off that very day. Huayang even came to see them off, dragging along a reluctant Shadow's End. Throughout the journey, Shadow's End wore a sour expression; after all, he still had to serve the Great Yu Emperor and couldn’t stray too far from him. Yet this princess showed no awareness of such matters and insisted on fostering relationships—what could possibly be more important than the Great Yu Emperor?
