For these years, due to his height, Xiao Zan had always been ostracized. In order to fit in, he had hunched his back quite a bit. If it weren't for the wooden board he secretly tied at night to support himself, he would have been too embarrassed to face anyone.
Xiao Han instructed the butler to bring a wooden box and handed it to Xiao Zan. "Guests from Great Jing have already checked into the inn in the city. Use this as a token to meet with them. I've written down everything regarding Ginger and placed it in the box. After that, you can decide how to proceed with them."
Xiao Zan glanced at the butler, Ji Uncle.
Ji Gui smiled and said, "I am but a humble man; I was once a mere scout for the Sang Family Army."
"There are more insiders in the city, aren't there?" Xiao Han replied. "In our household, it's just you and me, Ji Uncle. As for the others, you don't need to know; don't pry."
Xiao Zan roughly flipped through the contents of the box and noted how detailed everything was. He expressed his concern, "Since we need to report illness and take leave, why not exaggerate it a bit? We should leave early for the countryside house to recuperate."
"Don't worry," Ji Uncle said. "We’ve already packed everything we need. By now, we should have arrived at Great Jing Territory. On the day His Majesty departs, when the guards in the city relax their vigilance, we will leave immediately with someone waiting for us along the way."
Feeling somewhat childish about being left out of the plans, Xiao Zan complained, "Am I still your son? You arranged everything for our escape route and only thought to inform me now?"
"It's not too late to say it now," Xiao Han replied. "As for Heavenly Sacrifice, regardless of what happens afterward, you won't be returning to this capital. You'll go back to Great Jing with the guests from Great Jing. I'll wait for you in Jingjing City!"
Having heard too much news today, Xiao Zan found it hard to digest and couldn't sleep. Taking advantage of the dark night and strong winds, he decided to investigate the inn himself; he wanted to see who was deeply involved with Ginger.
When he reached the inn's entrance, he unexpectedly spotted Niu Dali standing there in a rather disheveled state, angrily brushing off dust from his clothes.
As Xiao Zan contemplated whether to hide his presence, Niu Dali turned his head while checking his torn clothing and noticed him. "What are you staring at? You officials do nothing while the streets of this capital are in disrepair! It's no wonder I tripped!"
"Are you taking your anger out on me?" Xiao Zan retorted. "Did you fall again in front of the Daoist temple?"
"Mind your own business!" Niu Dali snapped back. "I don’t have time for your nonsense; however, if you're blocking my way, please step aside."
"Blocking your way? Are you trying to enter this inn?" Xiao Zan asked with surprise. "What a coincidence."
Niu Dali put on an air of authority and said, "Xiao Commander, is this personal or official business? Regarding that decree issued this afternoon, it's better if Niu Xianshi doesn't pry too much."
"Coming here at such a late hour probably isn't for anything good," he added suspiciously.
