"Why are you so certain?" Elder Tong asked, his voice steady yet filled with an underlying tension.
In the past, during the time of the Immortals, no one had ever found a path to Ascend, which led to the creation of the Ascension Well. On the day they left, as their figures vanished, the well collapsed. I spent decades trying to restore it, merely bringing back its appearance, but inside, I could feel no trace of energy.
Having made a mistake, I feared I might never return. I spent countless years traversing every inch of this land and was absolutely certain that there was no other way. If there were, would I still be trapped here waiting for death?
Sang Qingxiao's face was filled with worry, her voice urgent. "Elder Tong, do you mean to say that Master Wulian did not Ascend?"
Elder Tong confirmed with a nod. "No."
"What about the others? What happened to those Holy Monks who Ascended before?"
Elder Tong sighed regretfully. "It seems they are in grave danger."

Elder Tong sighed again. "There were once immortals who ventured into the heavens. After about a hundred thousand steps, they could go no further. Although there was no Barrier, unseen dangers forced them to halt."
With no way back and filled with resentment, I too had ventured up once. Embarrassingly, I barely made it sixty thousand steps before fear drove me back.
"What exactly is this unseen danger you speak of?"
"It is unseen, uncharted, unknown—and even more so, it is something we dare not know," Elder Tong replied, his expression shifting to one of fear. "Thus, while the path to Ascend usually leads upward, the Immortals could only retreat in shame from below."
So perhaps those who Ascended before were eradicated by that unseen danger.
Sang Qingxiao looked utterly disheartened by this news. "What are we to do now?"
Elder Tong suggested, "When he becomes agitated, try to calm him down. Emotions can be beneficial but must be measured; we truly cannot afford any recklessness."
"The only Qilin left is rushing toward its demise—what a pity," he added.
Elder Tong spoke for quite some time and drank more than enough wine. Gradually exhausted, he swayed as he stood up and pointed toward several houses behind him, arranging accommodations for everyone without caring whether they would actually stay or not. With an apologetic demeanor, he returned to his room.
Master Wulian is truly dead!
