I have a distant relative, Zhang Yaozu, who works as an embalmer at a funeral home. Since he still works there, I cannot disclose the location of the funeral home.
As for whether embalmers encounter strange occurrences, it varies from person to person.
In fact, during Zhang Yaozu's early days on the job, he experienced something quite terrifying. One day, he was watching his master apply makeup to a deceased body when the master instructed him to go outside and chase away the feral cats. Whenever a new corpse arrived, a swarm of cats would inevitably show up.
This kind of thing shouldn't be overly alarming; however, if you had witnessed feral cats feasting on a corpse, you might feel differently.
According to his master, Wu Fugui, many years ago, a body had been bitten by feral cats and immediately transformed into a terrifying zombie. The zombie seemed very hungry, grabbing people, drinking blood, and biting necks.
So working here requires utmost caution; otherwise, you might end up with a bite on your neck!
“Wu Fugui, are you trying to scare Zhang away?” someone remarked.
Wu Fugui replied, “If he lacks the courage, he simply isn't fit for this job.”
Zhang Yaozu had vowed since childhood to achieve success and bring honor to his family; thus, he cherished this well-paying job. To become a qualified embalmer, one must learn how to apply makeup to the deceased.
The new corpse that had arrived that day was a male victim of a car accident whose skull was gruesomely shattered. In the end, his master painstakingly reassembled it to resemble its original state.
The deceased was named Li Zhongping, and his cremation was scheduled for the following morning. To save time, his master did not place the body in the cold storage before leaving for the day.
That night, however, the night watchman called in sick unexpectedly. Therefore, Wu Fugui suggested that his apprentice Zhang Yaozu stay behind to keep watch and practice his courage. Even though Zhang Yaozu was reluctant, he had to pretend to be unfazed.
The job of a Night Watchman was quite simple: after checking the corpses and securing the doors and windows, the next task was to sleep.
Zhang Yaozu dared not sleep; he endured a torturous wait until the rooster crowed three times before finally relaxing his vigilance. Just as he was about to lie down to rest, he suddenly heard heavy footsteps approaching from a distance, drawing nearer until they stopped at the foot of his bed. At the same time, a dark figure appeared there.
Zhang Yaozu screamed as he turned on the bedside lamp, only to see a middle-aged man with a body covered in bruises and a dry, gaunt face.
To his horror, it was Li Zhongping, the corpse that had just undergone cosmetic surgery during the day. Now transformed into a living dead, Li Zhongping grabbed some clothes and began putting them on.
Seeing this scene, Zhang Yaozu's face turned pale as he cried out for help and rushed for the door. He flailed his arms wildly, stumbling as he ran.
However, the living dead clumsily pursued him outside.
Although the figure moved stiffly and slowly, it showed no signs of fatigue.
In contrast, Zhang Yaozu quickly exhausted his strength and could only hide in a corner, trembling uncontrollably. He curled up into a ball, his teeth chattering.
Yet the living dead seemed to know his every move, closing in relentlessly. Just as Zhang Yaozu turned to flee, two local dogs suddenly appeared in his path. To his surprise, the living dead seemed to fear these dogs greatly and fell backward with a thud.
After hitting the ground, the corpse's abdomen began to ripple, and then a furry creature emerged from within, quickly escaping into the night. It wasn't until dawn that the master arrived to take Zhang Yaozu back inside to the mortuary.
The creature that escaped was no ordinary weasel; it was likely over a hundred years old. Once it burrowed into a corpse, it could manipulate the body to create illusions for its own unknown purposes.
Though these were merely unscientific rumors and stories, reality was not devoid of individuals who hid behind false facades to deceive and commit evil deeds.
The only difference between such villains and the living dead is that they can still breathe.
