When I left, the lawyer asked me what to do next. I smiled and said, "They'll definitely transfer whatever little property they have left." The lawyer hesitated to speak. I gestured to him that I understood everything. I was well aware that Wang Meili would act swiftly. However, they were still within the time frame for filing an appeal, so we couldn't apply for a seizure.
"It doesn't matter; let that little bit be a token of charity for their orphaned family," I said. "Compared to the suffering they are about to face, it means nothing." The lawyer remained silent.
I instructed him to go to the city hospital and retrieve my mother's death report and medical records. When I met with the doctor, he was very polite, knowing that I was Mai Dacheng's son. He informed me that my mother had died from chronic poisoning. I had suspected this outcome, but hearing it confirmed was still shocking.
I asked the doctor whether the hospital would report cases of chronic poisoning. He explained that many harmful toxins could not be traced back to their source. Unless it was acute poisoning that led to death, the hospital would not report it voluntarily. Chronic poisoning required evidence and a formal investigation. The doctor expressed his inability to help further.
I thought of my mother; she loved lipstick, and her vanity was filled with various shades. Could her chronic poisoning be related to her lipsticks? I immediately called the new Householder of the villa and asked if anything had gone missing from the basement below the villa. The Householder told me that due to the hurried move, he hadn't had time to tidy up, and nothing had been touched. I breathed a sigh of relief and quickly drove to the villa.

I headed straight for the basement.
I rummaged through the boxes for a long time but couldn’t find what I was looking for. It seemed my father had dealt with it long ago. Just as I was about to turn and leave, a sudden thought struck me. I remembered that on the day my mother passed away, I had found a lipstick on her. That day was my mother’s birthday, and I had secretly taken a lipstick and slipped it into my backpack. Since then, I had kept it safe.
I hurried upstairs and opened the box, and indeed, I found the faded lipstick inside. I took it for testing. As I expected, the results confirmed my suspicions: the lipstick contained chronic lethal chemical toxins.
I managed to recover the data from my phone and discovered chat records between my father and Wang Meili, discussing their plan to kill my mother. “Let’s make sure only the two of us know about this; we’ll just say she died of depression,” one message read. “What if it gets out?” another replied. “It won’t; her cosmetics are all imported, no one will suspect anything.” “But what if Mai Guoliang used it too?” “Then we’ll take care of him as well; I still have another son.” “But he’s your biological son!” “Hmph! So what if he is? He’s just a useless waste. My fortune must go entirely to Fu Gui!”
Reading through those messages made me tremble with anger. It turned out that I was also one of their murder targets!
I took the evidence and reported it to the police. When Wang Meili was arrested, she looked completely bewildered. “Poisoning? I didn’t do anything!” she protested. “We’ll see what the court has to say,” the officer replied.
After Wang Fugui learned of the situation, he rushed to me, pleading for mercy. He offered to give me half of his property and cars, just for me to let his mother go. He shamelessly said, "What’s the point of pursuing the past when the person is already dead?"
"That's nonsense!" I slapped him hard across the face. "Just because someone is dead, you think you can avoid accountability? If I killed you, would that mean I could say the same?"
"You’re already so rich; why do you still want to make things difficult for us?" he retorted.
"Being rich is my business; it has nothing to do with you!" I unleashed a flurry of slaps on him, landing over a dozen strikes that left him bleeding from his mouth and nose.
"You dare hit me? I'm going to call the police!" Wang Fugui shouted as he pulled out his phone.
"Hello, we’ve arrived," several police officers walked in.
"That's him!" Wang Fugui pointed at me, his face filled with surprise. "You came just in time! He intentionally harmed me; arrest him!"
The officers paused for a moment before pulling out handcuffs and directly cuffing Wang Fugui instead.
"You've got the wrong person!" he exclaimed in panic.
"We haven't made a mistake," one officer replied. "You are suspected of embezzlement and are under arrest."
"Embezzlement? I didn’t embezzle anything! That money was given to me by my father!"
Wang Fugui's case was processed quickly due to overwhelming evidence, and within a month, a verdict was reached. Given the substantial amount he had embezzled and his inability to provide proof of any gifts, along with his status as merely an employee at the company, he was sentenced to life imprisonment and had all his personal assets confiscated.
Six months later, the verdict for Wang Meili was announced; she was the mastermind behind the murder case. Due to the heinous nature of her crime and her motive to poison me as well, the court sentenced her to death and ordered the confiscation of all her personal assets. Both Wang Meili and Wang Fugui were dissatisfied with the court's decision and filed for a second appeal. At the same time, I requested a revision of the verdict. I strongly insisted that Mai Dacheng, the murderer, be included in the charges. Even if he was dead, I wanted him convicted, ensuring he would suffer in hell.
I harbored a deep-seated hatred for my father. He was responsible for my mother's death. Therefore, even in death, I wanted him to face the punishment he deserved.
Time passed swiftly, and the intermediate court finally delivered its judgment. Mai Dacheng was found guilty of murder and sentenced to death, with lifelong deprivation of political rights. The original sentences for Wang Meili and Wang Fugui remained unchanged.
Today was the day Wang Meili was taken away to be executed. I held two copies of the verdict as I stood before my mother's grave. I set both documents ablaze, watching them burn to ashes. As I gazed at my mother's photo on the tombstone, tears welled up in my eyes.
"Mom, may you rest in peace! Those who harmed us have received their just punishment."
As the verdicts turned to ash and floated in the air, it felt as though my mother had received the news from beyond.
