Outside Liu City, by a riverbank in the suburbs, a bonfire crackled brightly. Beside the fire, Xiao Chen had just finished eating and was now pounding his fists against a large tree.
Boom!
With a powerful punch, leaves scattered down around him. A few green leaves landed on his head, and he irritably brushed them away.
Green was truly annoying.
Xiao Chen muttered under his breath. For some reason, he had felt out of sorts all day, as if something important had been taken from him.
Zhao Yao, Teacher Zhou, are you all right? Teacher Zhou, don’t worry. Once I deal with that demon python and my master regains his strength, I will come back to find you.
He sighed suddenly. After fleeing from the Northern Frontier, he felt as if all his luck had run out; even having a full meal seemed impossible now. Moreover, when facing the demon python, he realized that with his current strength, he was no match for it at all.
His master was in a coma and could not help him anymore.
It’s all that Chen Anlin’s fault! I will tear you to pieces one day!
However, the pressing issue at hand was how to deal with that demon python. Suddenly, an idea struck him. On his way here, he had encountered a group of disciples from a sect who were quite powerful.
Perhaps he could find an opportunity to inform them about the situation and then team up to confront the demon python together. When they were both weakened from the fight, he could swoop in like a hidden bird!
Thinking this way, a smile crept onto Xiao Chen's face as he marveled at his own cleverness for coming up with such a plan.
Delicious noodles were on their way.
Chen Anlin approached with a bowl of noodles in hand, grinning as he made his way over to Zhou Tong.
Zhou Tong rose from her cross-legged position, her eyes sparkling with excitement. "I feel like I'm about to break through in my cultivation! An Lin, being with you really enhances my joy."
"Then you should thank me," he replied with a teasing grin.
"I'll thank you after I eat," Zhou Tong said, her big, watery eyes fixed intently on Chen An Lin.
Just as she was about to take the bowl of noodles from his hands, Chen An Lin suddenly pulled it back. "Don't you know that a sincere thank you requires some effort?"
"Ah, but I'm already dressed so lightly," Zhou Tong murmured, though she obediently complied. She knew he was just teasing her.
Seeing how obedient Zhou Tong was, Chen An Lin confirmed that she had been completely transformed by him, both in spirit and body.
The next day, before dawn broke, Chen An Lin hurried toward the palace. Since he was preparing to head to Liu City, it was only right to report to the Empress before leaving.
As usual, unless there was something special going on, the Empress was still enjoying her beauty sleep. The sun was already high in the sky, yet she had not risen.
Outside, two palace maids were waiting. Chen An Lin took out two silver ingots and handed them to them. "What did Her Majesty say about me behind my back? She wasn't angry yesterday, was she?"
"You told us it was fine," one of them replied. "But there were some concerns."
After some inquiries, he finally confirmed that the Empress had not been angered by his disrespect the day before. This brought him a sigh of relief.
While waiting for Wu Xixue to wake up, Yang Dou appeared behind him in a flash.
"Dou'er, you scared me!" Chen An Lin exclaimed as he quickly pulled Yang Dou into the main hall.
"Hey, what are you doing? Pulling me like that is so strange!"
Yang Dou initially wanted to maintain her indifferent demeanor, but when Chen Anlin took her hand, she felt a wave of panic wash over her.
As they entered the main hall, Chen Anlin said, "I’m preparing to go on a long journey. Sister Dou, you have nothing to do lately, so come with me."
"That requires His Majesty's approval," she replied.
"Then you sit down first; let me give you a shoulder massage! I noticed your complexion has been a bit off lately; you must be tired."
Before Yang Dou could refuse, Chen Anlin pulled her to sit down and began to knead her shoulders.
Yang Dou: !!!
Her face flushed instantly. She wanted to decline, but it felt so good.
To be fair, although Chen Anlin usually seemed a bit off-kilter, his medical skills were indeed impressive.
After a moment, the Empress arrived as well.
In the hall, the Empress crossed her legs and glanced at Chen Anlin, cautiously covering her legs without leaving even a tiny gap.
This left Chen Anlin speechless; it was surprising how wary she was of him.
"You say you're going to Liu City to capture a wanted criminal? Chen Anlin, when did you start caring about such matters?" Wu Xixue thought to herself, speculating whether Chen Anlin was planning to sneak out for some fun.
And he mentioned taking Yang Dou with him—surely they weren’t planning to sneak away together?
"Your Majesty, Chen Anlin knows the whereabouts of that Xiao Chen. This young man must have a great secret," he asserted confidently.
"In that case, I can send people from the Eastern Bureau; we will ensure that Xiao Chen has no place to hide!"
Upon hearing this, Chen Anlin became anxious.
Sending the Eastern Bureau after Xiao Chen would be like sending the Calabash Brothers to rescue their grandfather—one by one, they'd be sent off!
"Your Majesty, only I know where Xiao Chen is hiding. He is cunning and has weaknesses that only I am aware of. Others will not be able to deal with him," Chen Anlin said earnestly.
"No." To his surprise, Wu Xixue still refused.
