Listening to the poem that Lin Ning composed for him, Hu Xueyan felt her cheeks flush and remained silent, holding back her modesty. Lin Xiu clapped his hands in approval and said, "Second Brother's poem for Xue Yin's sister is truly a masterpiece born of the moment, a genuine expression of familial affection. However, it lacks a title!" After pondering for a moment, Lin Ning suggested, "How about we call it 'Snow Fairy'?" Lin Xiu chuckled and asked, "Why 'Snow Fairy'? Your sister is called Xueing, not Snow Fairy!" Lin Ning explained, "'Snow' is derived from Xue Yin's sister's name, and 'Fairy' implies that such a beautiful sister must be like a celestial being descended to earth."
Hearing Lin Ning praise her, Hu Xueyan felt her cheeks bloom with a deeper blush. She softly replied, "How could Second Master know that I am someone with both inner and outer beauty upon our first meeting?" Lin Ning replied earnestly, "Since Heaven has favored you with such exquisite beauty, you must be a fairy who enjoys the adoration of many. The lines from Wei Zhuang's 'Pusa Man'—'The person by the stove resembles the moon, her fair wrist glistens like frost and snow'—perfectly describe your fair complexion. The lines from Li Bai's 'Ancient Style'—'The fragrance is unmatched in the world; for whom does this scent spread?'—best capture your elegant demeanor. The verses from Cao Zhi's 'Ode to the Goddess of Luo'—'Bright eyes and charming smile; dimples enhance her beauty'—are a true reflection of your delicate features. You exude an orchid fragrance that permeates both your exterior and interior, so I can only present you with such beautiful verses: 'Outer beauty and inner grace overflow with orchid fragrance.'"
Feeling overwhelmed by Lin Ning's generous compliments, Hu Xueyan rose slightly and bowed to him in gratitude, softly saying, "Thank you for your kind words, Second Master." Lin Ning quickly assured her, "I genuinely believe that only a naturally gifted gem or an untainted green lotus deserves to be compared to you; there is no flattery or insincere praise in my words."
Lin Cheng chimed in with a smile, "Today we have welcomed a beloved little sister into our family; even if Second Brother were to flatter you, it would be entirely normal." Miao Shuyan turned to Hu Xueyan and said, "Since this is your first visit to our Lin family, you must stay for several days. Referring to your three older brothers and sisters as 'Master' feels too distant; from now on, let us call each other siblings." Hu Xueyan nodded in agreement and immediately began addressing the three children of the Lin family as Brother Cheng, Brother Ning, and Sister Xiu. That evening, Miao Shuyan arranged for Hu Chuanmao to stay in the Mo Zhu Building while Hu Xueyan stayed with Lin Xiu in the Emerald Bamboo Pavilion.
Hu Chuanmao received a message via carrier pigeon from Lin Enzhe regarding the preparation of ten thousand stones of salt for Xiong Yanbi to be sent free of charge to the Borderlands. Meanwhile, Lin Enzhe provided three hundred thousand stones of grain to the Borderlands army. On the morning of the sixth day of the new year, Xiong Yanbi bid farewell to Lin Enzhe and his wife as well as Hu Chuanmao. Lin Enzhe requested that his three disciples accompany Xiong Yanbi to escort the supplies of grain and salt to the Borderlands. Concerned about Lin Ning's well-being, Xiong Yanbi repeatedly urged him to diligently practice martial arts in order to serve the court in the future. Naturally, Lin Ning promised wholeheartedly.
After Xiong Yanbi departed, Hu Chuanmao also took his leave from Lin Enzhe. Despite their earnest attempts to keep him there, Hu Chuanmao said, "I appreciate your warm hospitality, but I have many responsibilities on my island that I cannot neglect." Miao Shuyan responded, "In that case, we will not insist on keeping you; however, may I request that Xueing stays for a few more days?" Considering that his daughter had never been away from him since her birth and was now old enough to see more of the world, he happily agreed to Miao Shuyan's request. He left Hu Xueyan at the Lin family home while he returned alone to Yunshan Island.
Hu Xueyan settled down with the Lin family. She had grown up on Yunshan Island, following her father, and had never traveled to other places. The three Lin siblings wanted her to experience the bustling vibrancy of Jinling, so they took her on a tour of the beautiful sights around the city. The four of them left Ho Chu Garden and arrived at Mochou Lake. Hu Xueyan was captivated by the picturesque scenery along the lake, where pavilions and towers dotted the landscape, making it look stunningly beautiful. The Shengqi Tower by Mochou Lake was famously known as the best tower in the world, with its red walls and green tiles, intricately carved beams, and painted rafters, exuding grandeur.
They entered through the main hall of Shengqi Tower. On the north wall facing the main entrance hung a couplet. The first line read, "What people say is fearsome; I begin to feel sorrow; upon careful reflection, the wind ripples a pool of spring water." The second line stated, "Victory brings joy; defeat is no concern; regardless of the outcome, the waves wash away all ancient glories." Lin Ning pointed to a chess table in the hall and introduced it, saying, "Legend has it that Emperor Zhu Yuanzhang and his beloved general Xu Da played chess here. General Xu was highly skilled and won against the Emperor. Instead of being angry, the Emperor gifted him all of Mochou Lake."
Looking at the couplet, Hu Xueyan pondered and said, "It's pitiful that General Xu contributed greatly to the Emperor but was ultimately killed out of fear that he might overshadow him." Lin Ning was secretly impressed that Hu Xueyan, at such a young age, understood this part of history so well. She continued, "I think the first line of this couplet is excellent; the author's imagination is incredibly rich. That pool of spring water rippling in the wind indeed resembles wrinkles on a person's face filled with sorrow."
Lin Ning asked Hu Xueyan, "Have you studied poetry?" Hu Xueyan replied, "When I have free time at home, I enjoy pondering over poems by great poets." Hearing this, Lin Ning said, "You mentioned that you think highly of this couplet's first line; do you have a better second line to match it?" Hu Xueyan hesitated for a moment and said, "I do have one in mind, but I'm afraid it won't be good enough and will make you all laugh." Lin Xiu encouraged her, saying, "Please don't hesitate to share."
"Since that's the case," Hu Xueyan said, "I'll give it a try. My second line is 'The pure remain pure; the turbid remain turbid; why fear people's words? The lotus rises from muddy waters untainted.'" Upon hearing Hu Xueyan's second line, Lin Ning felt it resonated beautifully with the first line and considered it a perfect match. Seeing Lin Ning deep in thought, Hu Xueyan smiled and asked playfully, "What do you think of my second line, Brother Ning?"
Lin Ning replied, "Your second line and first line are simply a match made in heaven; I find no flaws in it." Hu Xueyan brushed her hair back lightly and smiled sweetly as she said, "Thank you for your praise, Brother Ning. Would you also share a second line so I can learn from you?" Lin Ning thought to himself that Hu Xueyan's second line was indeed perfect and that her talent in poetry was not inferior to his own. However, he couldn't easily concede defeat.
"I do have a second line in mind," Lin Ning said cautiously. "It's just not as good as yours; please don't laugh at me. My second line is 'Clouds shift from sunny to rainy; joys and sorrows come together; cold and warmth have their flavors; who can defy heaven's constant ways?'"
Lin Xiu listened to Lin Ning's second line and remarked, "Though your second line doesn't rhyme with Xue Yan's as beautifully as hers does, it's still acceptable. I also came up with one but doubt it can surpass Xue Yan's level. My second line is 'Flowers are not flowers; mist is not mist; seeing flowers through mist makes understanding worldly matters difficult.'"
Lin Ning nodded after hearing Lin Xiu's second line and said, "Sister's second line may not capture the same essence as Xue Yan's but I believe it's better than what Second Brother has offered."
Lin Xiu beamed with joy and said, "Really? You praise me! I'm truly happy now; only Big Brother hasn't shared his second line yet."
Lin Cheng had been quietly contemplating his own response while listening to his siblings' exchanges. He thought to himself that he couldn't let Second Brother outshine him this time. Clearing his throat, he declared confidently, "My second line is 'Rumors are nothing to fear; remaining true to oneself reveals one's heroic nature.'"
Lin Xiu commented on Lin Cheng's response saying, "Big Brother’s second line seems similar to Xue Yan’s on the surface but lacks rhyme and feels awkward."
Lin Ning knew that Lin Cheng’s literary skills were not high since he often faced reprimands from Lin Enzhe for poor poetry. Now with Lin Xiu mocking his response again, he worried about Lin Cheng losing face. To ease the tension, Lin Ning said cheerfully, "It's just a couplet! No need to take it so seriously! As long as we’re having fun! In a few days it will be Lantern Festival; shall we go out for Lantern Appreciation?" Everyone clapped in agreement.
On the night of Lantern Festival on the fifteenth day of the first lunar month, Jinling City was adorned with colorful lanterns shining brightly like daylight. The group arrived at Qinhuai River where crowds thronged in vibrant attire adorned with jewels and brocade garments amidst fragrant silks while music filled the air with excitement. The four young ones happily solved numerous lantern riddles and collected many small toys.
Having grown up on Yunshan Island without ever witnessing such lively scenes before, Hu Xueyan sighed in awe: "Jinling is so beautiful! I feel a bit reluctant to leave here."
Lin Ning asked curiously, "What is Yunshan Island like? Could you describe it for us?"
Hu Xueyan replied enthusiastically: "On Yunshan Island there are three mountains named Yunyu Mountain, Yunwu Mountain, and Yunxue Mountain. Yunyu Mountain blooms with flowers year-round like springtime; Yunwu Mountain is shrouded in mist with rolling clouds; while Yunxue Mountain remains covered in snow all year round."
Upon hearing about Yunxue Mountain’s perpetual snow on Yunshan Island, Lin Ning couldn’t help but daydream about visiting it someday. He told Hu Xueyan earnestly: "I would love to visit Yunshan Island if given a chance."
Hu Xueyan smiled brightly: "That would be easy! I happen to miss my father a bit too; I plan to return to Yunshan Island in a few days. You can ask Uncle Lin and Aunt Miao if they could accompany us!" Everyone agreed wholeheartedly with Hu Xueyan’s idea.
After the first month of the lunar calendar, a few days passed, and in the blink of an eye, Hu Xueyan had been staying at the Lin family for over twenty days. Hu Xueyan bid farewell to Lin Enzhe and his wife. Miao Shuyan, reluctant to part with the clever and lively Hu Xueyan, urged her to stay a little longer. Hu Xueyan simply said that she had been away from home for too long and missed her father. Seizing the opportunity, the three siblings of the Lin family requested their parents' permission to visit Yunshan Island. Lin Enzhe and his wife thought that since their three children were always busy with their studies, it wouldn't hurt to let them take this chance to enjoy a trip to Yunshan Island. So they sent the steward Linyi to escort them to Yunshan Island.
The four young people boarded a small boat with Linyi and sailed westward. In just half a day's time, they arrived at Yunshan Island. After they disembarked, Linyi rowed back to Jinling to report to Lin Enzhe. The three siblings of the Lin family saw that the island was lush with greenery, blooming flowers everywhere, filled with the sounds of birds and fragrant blossoms, radiating a strong sense of spring—so different from the early spring weather in Jinling, which was still chilly. They couldn't help but marvel at it. The four of them followed a flower-lined path towards Yihua Garden, where Hu Chuanmao and Hu Xueyan lived. As they walked, Hu Xueyan introduced Yihua Garden as a beautifully laid-out garden located on the eastern side of Yunshan Island. After about an hour's walk, they arrived at Yihua Garden. Lin Ning noticed that Yihua Garden was very grand, filled with pavilions, lakes, and streams, lush and verdant—an impressive sight.
Hu Xueyan led them around, and after about the time it takes to burn an incense stick, they reached a striking red building hidden among the shadows of trees and flowers. Lin Ning saw that the plaque on this building read "Cang Hai Lou." Hu Xueyan said, "This building is where my father lives; let's go visit him." Inside Cang Hai Lou, Hu Chuanmao was discussing some matters regarding the island with his wife Cheng Yun. He was very pleased to see his beloved daughter accompanied by the three siblings from the Lin family visiting Yunshan Island. Hu Chuanmao introduced Cheng Yun to the siblings: "This is my wife; you can call her Aunt Yun."
Lin Ning felt quite curious and thought that they should call her "Aunt" instead of "Aunt Yun." He noticed that although Aunt Yun was middle-aged, she still had a beautiful face with a complexion like snow. Her demeanor was elegant and graceful, warm and approachable, exuding an innate charm that made people feel comfortable around her. When Lin Ning heard Hu Xueyan also refer to her as Aunt Yun instead of mother, he realized that Cheng Yun was not Hu Xueyan's biological mother. However, he saw that Cheng Yun cared deeply for Hu Xueyan; even though Hu Xueyan had only been away from Yunshan Island for over twenty days, Cheng Yun expressed how much she missed her. It was evident that there was a deep bond between them.
Hu Chuanmao instructed Hu Xueyan: " Xueing, make sure to accompany your three older siblings around Yunshan Island these next few days." Hu Xueyan replied sweetly, "Got it, Father."
The four of them exited the Azure Blue Pavilion and walked eastward. Not far from the pavilion stood a two-story red building with a plaque that read "Azure Blue Pavilion." Hu Xueyan said, "This red building was built by my father for Aunt Yun." The three siblings could tell from Hu Chuanmao's attitude towards Cheng Yun that he was very considerate of her, having built her a delicate chamber, which was not surprising at all. Right next to Cheng Yun's Azure Blue Pavilion was Hu Xueyan's fragrant chamber, Qingdai Building. In front of Qingdai Building, flowers bloomed abundantly, and the most eye-catching was a large magnolia tree adorned with white blossoms. The Yulan Flowers, illuminated by the sunlight, appeared even whiter than jade, their blooms surpassing snow in beauty. The enchanting fragrance wafting through the air warmed Lin Ning's heart like gentle water. Suddenly, he let out an "ah" as if struck by a thought. Hu Xueyan and Lin Xiu asked in unison, "What is it?" Lin Ning replied, "Do you remember the poem 'Snow Fairy' I wrote for my sister when she came to Jinling a while ago?" Hu Xueyan responded, "Of course I remember. What's on your mind?" Lin Ning continued, "In the poem, I praised my sister as someone 'as clear as azure jade and as pure as floating blue and green lotus.' Coincidentally, there are both Qingdai Building and Azure Blue Pavilion on Yunshan Island. I wonder if it's just a coincidence or if I've been here in a past life; it's truly strange." Hearing this, Hu Xueyan found it curious too: "Yes, you have never been to Yunshan Island before, and I haven't mentioned Qingdai Building or Azure Blue Pavilion to you. Could it be that you really visited here in a past life?" Lin Xiu laughed and said, "Isn't it obvious? Xue Yin's sister and my second brother are fated from a past life; this life is just a continuation of their bond." Lin Xiu's words made Hu Xueyan blush; she covered her face with a handkerchief and playfully scolded Lin Xiu, saying, "As an older sister, you don't act like one! When did I offend you?" The three were laughing and joking when they noticed Lin Cheng standing silently to the side, seemingly displeased. Lin Xiu knew that their eldest brother valued his pride and guessed that they had inadvertently neglected him. So he changed the subject: "Can we take a look at my sister's chamber?" Hu Xueyan quickly invited them into Qingdai Building.
Upon entering Qingdai Building, Lin Ning saw the flower candles and colorful lanterns inside; everything was spotless and exuded a fresh elegance. Hu Xueyan's maid Qin Lan served tea to the three of them. Lin Ning noticed a book resting on a table by the window in the east; he picked it up and saw it was Wang Shifu's "The West Chamber." He asked, "Sister, do you enjoy reading novels?" Hu Xueyan sighed and said, "I only occasionally flip through novels when I find time amidst my busy schedule. My family's Book Immortal Pavilion has plenty of books; if my father knew I read such trivial things, he would scold me." Hearing her mention Book Immortal Pavilion excited Lin Ning: "I want to visit your Book Immortal Pavilion!"
The four exited Qingdai Building and walked east through a long corridor covered in green vines. At the end of the corridor stood Book Immortal Pavilion. Upon entering Book Immortal Pavilion, they found an antique set of rosewood tables and chairs in the main hall. On the north wall hung an ink wash landscape painting depicting towering mountains and pavilions bathed in the evening glow beside rocks by the water's edge, obscured by drooping willows. Behind the pavilion rose steep mountains with lush trees at their peaks; in the painting stood a scholar gazing at the solitary wild goose against the sunset while a young boy stood behind him. Although the figures in the painting were tiny like beans, they were vividly alive; even the solitary wild goose seemed to soar gracefully. The entire scene was perfectly balanced in color depth and style—elegant and ethereal—clearly crafted by a master artist. In the upper left corner of the painting was inscribed a poem: "In misty waters beneath jeweled curtains of painted beams, solitary wild geese vanish without trace; for a thousand years I've longed to see Wang South China Sea—once borrowing wind from Dragon King." The signature read: painted by Tang Yin.
Lin Ning was taken aback; he clearly remembered that when he was young in Jinling, his father had invited home a private tutor who taught him painting and had mentioned that "The Solitary Wild Goose" was one of Tang Bohu's most cherished works. After Tang Bohu passed away, its whereabouts became unknown—how could this painting appear on Yunshan Island? It seemed Hu Xueyan sensed Lin Ning's thoughts; she smiled and asked, "Brother Ning must be wondering how Tang Bohu's painting ended up on our Yunshan Island? It's quite a story. My father said that about eight hundred nautical miles southeast of Yunshan Island lies an island even more beautiful than ours called Diaoyu Island. Fifteen years ago, my father, Aunt Yun, and the residents lived on Diaoyu Island for generations. It was picturesque and rich in resources. The residents led peaceful lives rising with the sun and resting at sunset without conflict. The island lord Cheng Haifeng—Aunt Yun’s father—was an elegant man skilled in music, chess, calligraphy, painting; he loved collecting antiques and works from renowned artists throughout history.
After Tang Bohu passed away, "The Solitary Wild Goose" fell into private hands until Lord Cheng spent heavily to buy it from a merchant to add to his collection. Diaoyu Island produced abundant gold; its residents engaged in fishing trade with Ming Dynasty inlanders and gold mining with Japanese traders. Unexpectedly, those Japanese harbored ambitions; they coveted Diaoyu Island’s wealth and schemed to seize it. One night, Japanese pirates launched hundreds of ships surrounding Diaoyu Island; upon landing they brutally killed anyone they encountered and looted everything they could find. Lord Cheng led his people in resistance; fierce battles raged for three days and nights until they were outnumbered—the island fell into pirate hands. On that fateful day when Diaoyu Island fell, Lord Cheng refused to surrender even unto death; he drew his sword against himself."
The three siblings gasped involuntarily upon hearing this. Lin Ning clenched his fists tightly in anger while gritting his teeth as Hu Xueyan continued: "The pirates took all residents of Diaoyu Island along with their treasures back to Japan. My father, mother, and Aunt Yun were closely watched by pirates initially out of fear they'd escape during their first two years in Japan; however over time they relaxed their vigilance thinking they had adapted to life there. One night while the pirates slept soundly, my father and Aunt Yun secretly took several large ships prepared beforehand along with Diaoyu Island’s residents and plundered treasures to escape Japan.
Naturally they could not return to Diaoyu Island; they sailed westward for two days and nights until they finally discovered Yunshan Island where my father and Aunt Yun settled everyone down—it has been over twelve years since then..." Hearing this made Lin Ning unable to hold back any longer as he asked Hu Xueyan: "You are already thirteen years old now while you've lived on Yunshan Island for twelve years—were you born in Japan? Who is your mother? Where is she now?"
Hu Xueyan replied: "That's right; I was born in Japan. My father said my mother was a girl from Diaoyu Island—they married while in Japan but shortly after giving birth to me she fell ill and passed away." As she spoke about this part her eyes reddened with tears threatening to spill forth.
Lin Xiu worried about her sadness quickly interjected: "You've shared so much already! Let's hurry up to see the books at Book Immortal Pavilion! My second brother loves books dearly—he can hardly wait!" Hu Xueyan quickly composed herself: "Yes! Yes! How could I almost forget what we came here for? Please follow me upstairs!" The four climbed up the stairs to the second floor where Lin Ning saw above the doorframe written 'Wan Shu Wu.' Entering Wan Shu Wu revealed ten rows of bookshelves neatly arranged from east to west.
Each shelf bore titles such as military strategy, various schools of thought on martial arts, history studies, astronomy geography alongside esoteric arts like culinary arts or medicine poetry prose calligraphy painting classic novels—all categorized systematically across ten shelves containing thousands upon thousands of books! No wonder this room was called Wan Shu Wu! The delightful fragrance from blooming flowers outside mixed with faint scents of books wafted through Wan Shu Wu making Lin Ning feel refreshed.
Curiously he asked: “Sister what kind of books do you usually enjoy reading?”
Hu Xueyan replied: “My father assigns me military strategy books along with various schools’ martial arts astronomy geography esoteric arts daily but personally I prefer poetry prose calligraphy painting novels along with culinary topics.”
Lin Ning approached shelves marked for various martial arts noticing an extensive collection including Shaolin Temple’s “Diamond Finger,” Wudang Sect’s “Taiji Sword,” Sun Moon Gang’s “The Art of Sun and Moon,” Penghe Gang’s “Deadly Golden Flute”... along with many other martial arts manuals from lesser-known sects displayed there too! Intrigued he asked: “Did Lord Cheng acquire these martial arts manuals too?”
Hu Xueyan clarified: “No these weren’t collected by Lord Cheng—most were obtained by Aunt Yun during her visits across different sects.”
Lin Ning grew even more curious: “Many major sects are heavily guarded—I wonder what methods Aunt Yun used to gather so many martial arts manuals?”
Hu Xueyan responded: “I’m not quite sure about that either—you’d have to ask Aunt Yun herself.”
Lin Ning once again found himself in front of the wall of Wan Shu Wu, adorned with numerous calligraphic works and paintings by famous artists. Among them were Wang Xianzhi's "Mid-Autumn Letter" and Han Xizai's "Night Banquet," both prominently displayed. As Lin Ning moved from the east wall to the north wall and then to the west wall, he noticed two elegantly penned poems hanging there. One was "Yu Mei Ren," and the other was "Jiang Cheng Zi," both signed by Hu Xueyan. Lin Ning gently recited the lines of "Yu Mei Ren": "When will the morning flowers fall in the evening? How many ties of dust are there? Painting red and green, fragrant still, beautiful flowers cannot bear to be neglected in the corner. Competing for beauty, they suffer through spring, only fearing loneliness. I ask you, are you also lonely? Just like a flower mistakenly entering the mortal world."
Lin Ning thought to himself that although this poem was beautifully written, it was too melancholic and sorrowful. He glanced at Hu Xueyan, pondering that she must have something on her mind; otherwise, she wouldn't have penned such a poignant piece. Turning his gaze to the adjacent "Jiang Cheng Zi," he began to read aloud: "The moon sets over the long corridor reflecting spring flowers, shrouded in mist, adding allure. The wind rises as flowers fall, their fragrance scattered with the breeze. Twisting and drifting down into the mortal realm, turning to dust—who cares? Seeing through worldly ties, do not mock me; I grieve for my grief, I ache for my pain. Water and moonlight, mirror flowers—it's all an illusion. With helpless sighs and regrets, though beautiful, flowers do not bloom forever!"
Seeing that "Jiang Cheng Zi" shared a similar sentiment with "Yu Mei Ren," filled with pessimistic disdain for life, Lin Ning couldn't help but ask Hu Xueyan, "Sister, why do you write such sorrowful poetry? Yunshan Island is surrounded by mountains and water, a picturesque place. Uncle Hu is the master here; Aunt Yun may not be your biological mother, but she treats you as her own. What troubles could you possibly have?"
Unexpectedly, upon hearing Lin Ning's words, Hu Xueyan shed two tears and choked out, "I envy you and Brother Cheng, as well as Sister Xiu. You have such wonderful mothers by your side. But my mother passed away so early; I can't even remember what she looked like."
Lin Ning quickly took out a handkerchief to wipe her tears and gently said to Hu Xueyan, "Sister, please don't be sad anymore. Now you have three more brothers and sisters; we will treat you just like our own sister." Lin Xiu chimed in from the side, "Yes! In the future, we four can drink wine under the moonlight together, composing poetry—what a delightful thing that would be!"
Hearing this, Hu Xueyan finally smiled through her tears and said, "To meet three elder brothers and sisters is truly a blessing." The four chatted for quite a while when Qin Lan arrived at Book Immortal Pavilion and said, "Master Hu and Aunt Yun invite the three guests from the Lin family to Canghai Tower for dinner."
Upon arriving at Canghai Tower, they found Hu Chuanmao and Cheng Yun already waiting for them at the dining table. Lin Ning was astonished by the lavish feast laid out before them—delicacies from land and sea were abundant. What amazed Lin Ning and his siblings even more was that there were fresh watermelons on the table. Lin Ning exclaimed in surprise, "It’s early spring now; how could there be watermelons on Yunshan Island? Are last year's watermelons frozen under the perpetual snow?"
Hu Xueyan shook her head and mysteriously replied, "I won't tell you just yet; I'll reveal it tomorrow when I take you three on a tour of Yunshan Island." As she spoke, she placed a large crab into Lin Ning's bowl. Suddenly, Lin Cheng's face turned sour. Lin Xiu shouted playfully, " Xue Yin's sister is biased! Why do you only serve Second Brother while ignoring me and Big Brother?"
Hu Xueyan blushed again and hurriedly said, "Alright! I’ll treat everyone equally; I’ll serve both you and Brother Cheng too!" She then served crabs to both Lin Cheng and Lin Xiu.
After dinner, Lin Cheng and Lin Ning were arranged to stay at Book Immortal Pavilion while Lin Xiu stayed with Hu Xueyan at Qingdai Building. Lying on his bed, Lin Ning felt the soft moonlight streaming through the window onto his face. Despite the gentle sounds of wind and waves lulling him to sleep and the silk-like softness of his bedding inviting rest after a long day’s journey, he simply could not bring himself to sleep; he felt reluctant to close his eyes as if doing so would cause him to miss out on the beautiful scenery of Yihua Garden.
He sat up in bed, draped himself in an outer garment, and stepped out of Book Immortal Pavilion. Following a stone path southward led him to a lakeside where a gentle breeze stirred the water under the moonlight into rippling waves; half of the lake was adorned with lotus flowers swaying alongside willows in the wind. The beauty of lake light reflecting off water was breathtaking.
As Lin Ning gazed dreamily at the lake's surface when suddenly a clear voice called from behind him: "It's so late; Brother Ning hasn’t gone to rest yet?" He turned around abruptly to see Hu Xueyan standing behind him with a bright smile on her face. The gentle breeze played with her green robe as if she were an ethereal being.
Lin Ning quickly replied, "Yes! I couldn't sleep so I came out for a walk; you haven't gone to bed either." Hu Xueyan said, "No... I don’t know why but I just can’t seem to fall asleep tonight. Let’s take a stroll to the pavilion in the middle of the lake."
As they walked together across the bridge towards Forget Worry Lake's pavilion, Lin Ning asked curiously about its name. Hu Xueyan explained: “This is Forget Worry Lake; I named it because I wanted to forget all my worries and live happily without care.” She sighed again: “I wonder if this wish can ever come true.”
Hearing her words filled with longing made Lin Ning feel protective towards her like an insecure child. He quickly reassured her: “Sister don’t be too sentimental; you're such a wonderful person; how could such a small wish not come true?” They reached the pavilion in Forget Worry Lake where Hu Xueyan squatted down by one side of it; she rolled up her sleeve revealing her fair wrist as she played with the water.
Feeling inspired by their surroundings today on their arrival at the island amidst vibrant spring scenery—a true paradise—Lin Ning expressed his feelings: “I have composed a poem titled ‘Jiang Cheng Zi: Spring on Yunshan Island’ that I would like to share with you if you're willing to listen.”
Hu Xueyan smiled warmly: “Of course! I would love to hear Brother Ning’s poem.” He recited aloud: “All things revive welcoming spring joyfully; one branch blooms amidst spring’s embrace—mountains filled with flowers everywhere proclaiming spring’s arrival! Even immortals linger here—mountains dark as ink waters like jade—clear mountains reflecting sails afloat! Fish leap joyfully ducks frolic upon waters—entering realms of blissful spirits only good moods remain! Year after year enjoying spring’s arrival—warm breezes caress our faces!”
Hu Xueyan couldn’t help but clap her hands in delight at his words. Lin Ning continued: “Isn’t my ‘Jiang Cheng Zi: Spring on Yunshan Island’ quite different from your sentimental version? With such beautiful scenery here if we don’t compose poetry praising it—it truly would be wasting heaven’s grace!”
Hu Xueyan sighed: “Indeed! Our Yunshan Island’s spring-like scenery is also my favorite; after hearing Brother Ning’s ‘Jiang Cheng Zi: Spring on Yunshan Island,’ inspiration struck me too—I have another ‘Jiang Cheng Zi: Spring on Yunshan Island’ that pairs perfectly with yours.”
Upon hearing that Hu Xueyan wished to create another poem that complemented his own made Lin Ning feel an unusual sweetness within him—a sense of blissful delight surged through him as he listened attentively.
Hu Xueyan recited clearly: “Gentle winds bring fine rains nurturing spring colors; flowers grasses trees—all bloom abundantly! Spring awakens revealing hints everywhere—even immortal realms cannot compare—writing scenes of spring painting its essence! A hundred flowers bloom competing for spring—delicate petals revealing unique blossoms rushing forth—all sharing good moods! Year after year inviting spring’s arrival—trimming spring light crafting exquisite beauty!”
Lin Ning laughed heartily: “I’m not boasting about myself here but truly these two poems we’ve created together are indeed perfect matches!”
Hu Xueyan teased back: “Why isn’t Sister Xiu here? You’re praising yourself now!”
Lin Ning replied playfully: “If only Xiu’er were here she’d have already lifted our poems up high!” They both burst into laughter together.
The night herons in the lake echoed their joyful laughter with soft calls nearby as they chatted endlessly until they realized it was late when they heard two knocks signaling from afar—the watchman announcing midnight had arrived.
Lin Ning escorted Hu Xueyan back towards Qingdai Building before returning alone back to Book Immortal Pavilion.
The next morning, the four of them got up for breakfast and set off towards Yunyu Mountain. Along the way, vibrant tulips bloomed in a riot of colors by the roadside. Lin Ning remarked, "When we were in Jinling, we rarely saw tulips. I didn't expect there to be so many on Yunshan Island." Hu Xueyan replied, "Jinling is a wealthy place, and tulips are an elegant flower. Two equally noble things may not always coexist harmoniously. On the contrary, in our paradise of Yunshan Island, we have the sunshine and soil that are perfect for tulips to thrive. This aligns with the natural law of survival of the fittest."
As they spoke, they arrived at a riverbank. Lin Ning noticed the crystal-clear water reflecting the white clouds above, as if flowing along with the river. He couldn't help but exclaim, "This is truly 'clear and flawless, reflecting flowing clouds.' I wonder what this river is called; it would be quite fitting if it were named Liuyun River." Hu Xueyan said, "I named this river myself. My thoughts align with Brother Ning's; it is indeed called Liuyun River." Lin Xiu teased them, "It seems that Second Brother and Xueyan share a deep connection; your thoughts are always remarkably in sync."
Hu Xueyan blushed again and playfully scolded, "Sister Xiu, do you have a grudge against me? Why do you always pick on me?" Lin Ning noticed that Lin Cheng was also smiling, but his expression seemed rather forced. The four continued along the river until they reached a bridge where the stone pillar at the entrance bore the inscription "Huayue Bridge." Lin Ning saw a sea of flowers stretching endlessly around them and imagined how beautiful it would be at night when the moon rose over this vast expanse of flowers illuminated by moonlight, lost in daydreams.
After crossing Huayue Bridge and passing through the flower sea, they finally arrived at Yunyu Mountain. As they ascended the mountain path, Lin Ning listened attentively as Hu Xueyan explained, "Aside from Yun Xue Mountain, there is no winter on Yunshan Island throughout the year. Various flowers bloom in succession; it's a paradise for beekeepers." She pointed to a tree with round red flowers and said, "This flower is called Ironheart Flower. The honey that my father sends to your Lin family every year comes from Ironheart Flower."
Lin Xiu exclaimed, "Indeed! This honey is sweet and fragrant; it melts in your mouth. We all particularly enjoy drinking it." The four continued their ascent when Lin Cheng spotted a cluster of cacti about eight or nine meters high and approached to take a closer look. Hu Xueyan urgently called out, "Be careful, Brother Cheng! Those cacti are highly poisonous!" Lin Ning drew his black-gold dagger and lightly sliced through one of the thick leaves. White sap immediately flowed from it, and a ladybug crawling on the leaf fell off and died upon contact with the sap. Lin Cheng stuck out his tongue in fright.
They pressed on until they passed a large rock when suddenly a wave of heat hit them. Lin Xiu asked in surprise, "Why is this rock so hot?" Hu Xueyan replied, "There are many such rocks on Yunyu Mountain. I don't know why they are so warm." Lin Ning slapped his forehead in realization and said, "I understand now how those fresh watermelons from last night's banquet came about! If we gather these heat-emitting stones together and plant vegetables and fruits in between them, we could harvest desired produce all year round." Hu Xueyan marveled, "Brother Ning is truly clever; those watermelons we had last night were indeed grown this way." Lin Xiu sighed, "I never expected there would be so many wonders on Yunshan Island."
Hu Xueyan added, "This is just the beginning; once you reach Yun Xue Mountain, you'll see what true wonders are." As they reached halfway up the mountain, they could faintly hear the sound of a massive waterfall. After a while, they saw a waterfall cascading down from above like silver threads; its waters surged like an army galloping forward, churning up white foam as it crashed onto the rocks below before swiftly flowing downwards. Hu Xueyan introduced this waterfall as Feitian Waterfall, which merges with Liuyun River at its base.
The four quickly made their way around the waterfall to reach the summit. The three siblings observed many trees there that stood about their height; these trees were entirely silver-white with thick sword-like leaves. Most of them had not bloomed except for one tree that astonishingly bore hundreds of purple-red flowers resembling a peacock's tail—truly beautiful. Hu Xueyan wore a complex expression; she was both surprised and saddened as she said, "I never expected that one of these Silver Sword Flowers would bloom! Do you know? This flower blooms only once every fifty years for just a few hours before dying along with its entire plant afterward. Every time I come to Yunyu Mountain and see these blooming Silver Sword Flowers, I feel melancholic."
Seeing Hu Xueyan become sad again, Lin Ning quickly reassured her: "Sister need not be sorrowful; the Silver Sword Flower showcases its most beautiful side to the world before it dies—surely that's much better than the Higanbana? The Higanbana blooms for a thousand years and falls for another thousand; its flowers and leaves can never meet—that's true sorrow." Hearing this from Lin Ning calmed Hu Xueyan somewhat; however, she still couldn't bear to watch the Silver Sword Flower slowly perish.
The four did not linger at the summit for long before hastily making their way back down the mountain.
