"Let's talk after the exam!"
"Alright!"
Listening to the two chatting, Bai Zhenzhen hesitated several times but ultimately remained silent.
On the morning of the twelfth day of the exam, Yao Beiluo and his teammates gathered to find Lin Yao, heading together to the edge of the cliff for a reconnaissance. They were positioned about ten meters away from the opposite cliff, and without any tools, they could only make do with what was available in the area.
This forest was abundant in towering trees; chopping down a few to build a bridge would suffice. Of course, that was the easy part. The real challenge lay next to the tea-producing exotic plant, where a pair of Level Three Gu Diao had built a nest, presumably for hatching eggs.
As everyone knew, animals were more aggressive during their breeding season. Any creature that approached their nest would immediately be attacked. Although the pair of Gu Diao were only Level Three, their aerial advantage and sheer numbers made them no less formidable than a Level Four giant python.
"What do you all think?" Lin Yao asked first.
Wang Jin, without thinking much, replied, "They're just two Level Three exotic beasts. With so many of us, we can just charge in."
Zhou Heng disagreed, saying, "I don't think that's wise. This isn't flat ground; if too many people go in and someone accidentally falls during the fight, what then?"
Yao Beiluo pondered for a moment before suggesting, "We could try to lure the two Gu Diao out of their nest and bring the battle over here. That way, we can take the opportunity to gather the tea leaves."
This method seemed feasible; Lin Yao agreed, "Let's give it a try."
With that, everyone began to take action. Zhang Feng, as a Level Four strength ability user, was tasked with chopping down trees for the bridge. During the construction process, one of the eagles became agitated as it flew overhead, screeching sharply as if trying to drive them away from its nest.
Despite their numbers, the Gu Diao dared not descend. Soon enough, a long bridge was completed. Yao Beiluo's team prepared to attract the Gu Diao with an exotic plant known for its peculiar scent. When burned, its aroma could spread over several kilometers and was favored by birds of prey.
A fire ability user quickly ignited the plant; however, despite hearing the two Gu Diao making irritated sounds from their nest, they did not emerge. Everyone felt a bit disappointed at this outcome.
"This won't do; the Gu Diao is probably about to lay its eggs, and the two eagles won't come out together," Yao Beiluo said.
"That won't work either; what are we supposed to do?" Wang Jin said impatiently.
Lin Yao had some ideas, but as someone who was merely a bystander, she couldn't just give them the answers and stifle their creativity. It was important to give the younger ones a chance to think, so she prompted, "Does the Gu Diao have any natural enemies?"
Everyone fell silent, racking their brains to think of the Gu Diao's predators.
"I thought of one: the Fish Scale Python," Meng Xingchen said excitedly. "Although it's not a natural enemy of the Gu Diao, it loves eating eggs. It will go to great lengths—climbing mountains and swimming through seas—to get to them. Plus, its scales are slippery and tough, making it hard for birds to catch it. It's the most hated egg thief among birds."
"Now that you mention it, I remember reading a post on StarNet that said the Fish Scale Python is both cunning and tenacious. If there were a ranking for the most hated beasts in the beast realm, it would definitely be on the list."
"What’s the point of all this? Where can we even find this Fish Scale Python?" Wang Jin snapped irritably.
After several rounds of this back-and-forth, Lin Yao couldn't help but shoot him a glare. "Did you grow that head just to look tall? When faced with a problem, can't you think for yourself instead of just asking others?"
Wang Jin wanted to retort but quickly shut his mouth when he met her piercing gaze.
With Wang Jin's noise out of the way, everyone began brainstorming ways to lure the Fish Scale Python over.
The Fish Scale Python loves eggs; as soon as it catches a whiff of them, it will come running from miles away.
While that might sound exaggerated, it was worth a shot.
So everyone got busy searching for various bird eggs. The forest soon turned chaotic with flapping wings and frantic movements.
Meng Xingchen and Zhang Feng joined in to help, leaving only Bai Zhenzhen beside Lin Yao.
At that moment, Bai Zhenzhen crossed her arms and wore an expression of disdain. "Why make things so complicated? If it were me, I'd just drop some poison and solve everything."
"Then why didn't you say that earlier?" Lin Yao asked, genuinely puzzled.
"Hmph! They just don't use their brains; they deserve to tire themselves out," Bai Zhenzhen replied haughtily.
Lin Yao could sense the frustration from others around her and could only pat Bai Zhenzhen's shoulder, kindly reminding her, "You shouldn't say that around others. It might get you in trouble."
Amidst the commotion, they collected a pile of eggs and selected a few that were most favored by the Fish Scale Python. They smashed them near an eagle's nest.
This time their efforts paid off; they soon attracted a Fish Scale Python as thick as an arm.
When the Gu Diao spotted the python, its neck feathers bristled in alarm. It let out sharp cries of intimidation and charged at the snake with claws and beak when it didn’t retreat.
At that moment, the python’s tenacious nature came into play.
Its scales were spherical in structure, both slippery and hard. When sharp objects pierced it, there was no point of resistance; instead, they would slide off, making it difficult to break through its defenses and even harder to bind it.
The claw of the Gu Diao tried to grab it, but the slippery body of the Fish Scale Python slipped right past its grasp. When it attempted to peck at it with its beak, it still failed to penetrate its defenses.
After struggling for a long time, as the python drew closer to its lair, the Gu Diao inside became anxious and let out sharp cries.
At this moment, a group of people was watching intently from the opposite side, captivated by the battle between the snake and the eagle.
Suddenly, whispers came from behind them, but no one paid much attention. The giant python had blocked their path for too long, causing those behind to catch up one after another.
With such a commotion on their side, the newcomers were drawn over by the noise, accustomed to such scenes. However, they did not expect that this time their casualness would render all their efforts in vain.
Lin Yao had noticed the newcomers from the very beginning and was quietly observing them.
A male voice asked, "What are you all doing?"
Someone eagerly explained the situation to him and proudly summarized, "Just wait! Once the Fish Scale Python eats the Gu Diao's eggs, the Gu Diao will relentlessly pursue it. At that point, we can pick some Mingmu Tea."
"Ah, how could you be so cruel? You want the Fish Scale Python to eat the Gu Diao's eggs? That’s harming innocent offspring!" A female voice suddenly interjected with a tone of reproach.
This voice sounded somewhat familiar to Lin Yao. As she searched her memory, she heard Bai Zhenzhen beside her grit her teeth and say, "Why is that white lotus Bai Youyou here? I’m going to deal with her!"
As she spoke, she started to move in that direction.
Lin Yao stopped her. "Wait a moment. Let’s see what she intends to do."
