The Particle Gun (which fires particle attacks, fundamentally striking at the flesh. The crafting method can be obtained by spending sign-in points.)
In the days that followed, Lin Yao was quite happy. While secretly signing in to gain various items, she also collaborated with Su Rui to modify her mech. It was a double delight.
Not only did Lin Yao have gains on her side, but Academician Zheng was also making significant progress. As the foremost expert in Yunmeng, his skills were not as limited as Su Rui had assumed; he was far beyond even reaching the tip of Su Rui's tail. At least when it came to upgrading Lin Yao's mech with beast bones, he proved to be quite helpful.
He only needed to provide data and ratios, and Academician Zheng along with his team could flawlessly handle the integration work that followed. After a few successful collaborations, Su Rui relaxed his requirements and allowed Academician Zheng to lead his team into the mech modification project.
Su Rui's casual remark stirred up quite a storm behind the scenes at the First Research Institute. The mech manufacturing industry on Yunmeng Star had known about this talented mech manufacturer from a mid-level civilization since Su Rui entered the First Research Institute. Due to various reasons, no one dared to act rashly, fearing they might overlook some detail and offend this mech manufacturer, causing him to leave.
Now, hearing that this mech manufacturer's project was open for others to join, everyone scrambled to get in. Although Lin Yao, as an outsider, was not directly affected, she could sense the undercurrents swirling behind her.
Of course, there were those who sought her out as the experimental subject for this project. She didn’t want to stir up trouble and only claimed to be an experiment without any decision-making power, keeping things tidy and straightforward. The more she said it, the more others took her words at face value, leaving her in peace.
During these tumultuous days, Zhenzhen's online pharmacy store finally registered successfully. She immediately expressed her joy and suggested going out for a celebratory meal. Considering that Su Rui lived in the villa, Zhenzhen hesitated about whether to invite him. He probably wouldn’t return until late anyway. Lin Yao's reassurance dispelled her doubts.
Zhenzhen openly expressed her excitement and added, "Meng Xingchen is also on Yunmeng Star; I’ll call him too."
When the four of them gathered for dinner after nearly half a month apart, Meng Xingchen was overly excited. "It feels like you three aren’t as thrilled after such a long time apart!"
Zhenzhen shot him a glance, unimpressed. "We've been living together every day; what's there to get excited about?"
"You three? How could you possibly be living together?" Meng Xingchen was taken aback, suddenly realizing. "I remember you and Zhang Feng aren't from Yunmeng Star. How did you end up here?"
"Only just figuring it out now? I thought you were just rusting away at home," Zhenzhen replied coolly.
Seeing Zhenzhen so composed, Lin Yao and Zhang Feng exchanged knowing looks. Meng Xingchen felt a bit wronged, sensing that he was the only one excluded from their little group.
"What are you hiding from me?" he demanded.
"Of course it's—"
Seeing that he was on the verge of tears, Lin Yao quickly intervened to prevent Zhenzhen from provoking him further. "Zhang Feng and I are renting a place in Zhenzhen's villa."
Although she still hadn't managed to pay rent, and Zhang Feng was trading his cooking skills for housing, they had indeed started off with the agreement to rent.
Meng Xingchen didn't care whether it was renting or borrowing; he knew that the three of them were living together while he was all alone. He nearly burst into tears. "How could you do this? Living together without telling me?"
"You live in your family's big estate, why would you want to squeeze into our little villa?" Zhenzhen teased in her familiar mocking tone.
"Aren't we supposed to be on the same team?"
"Yes." Lin Yao had initially wanted to say otherwise but refrained, fearing it would upset him. She offered a vague response instead.
"If we're on the same team, we should stick together and support each other. Why did you leave me out?"
Lin Yao shrugged helplessly. "We didn't leave you out; we were invited by Zhenzhen."
Zhenzhen shot him a challenging look. "Beg me! If you beg me, I'll let you move in."
Meng Xingchen was furious and turned to Lin Yao for help. "Boss!"
"I really can't make that decision," she replied lightly.
Zhenzhen made a face at him playfully.
In a fit of anger, Meng Xingchen slammed his hands on the table and stood up. "I don't care! I'm moving in tomorrow!"
After teasing him for a bit, Zhenzhen didn't completely shut him down; instead, she offered him an out. "Your family deals with potions, right? Even if you're not good at business, you should know something about potions. Can you take a look at this potion list for me? I'm thinking of selling it on my online store—do you think it will sell?"
This matter was crucial for Meng Xingchen, as it determined whether he could live with his team. He couldn't afford to be careless and began to study it seriously.
After a careful examination, Meng Xingchen looked serious and asked, "Do you want to hear the truth?"
"Of course."
"To be honest, your potions have no advantages. There's no price advantage, no effectiveness advantage, and certainly no brand reputation advantage. In the market, eight out of ten potion shops sell these potions. You're just an online store, which makes you even less competitive."
Zhenzhen had initially been full of confidence. She thought that even if she couldn't make a lot of money, her skills as a potion maker would at least allow her to earn some fees for potion preparation.
However, after hearing Meng Xingchen's words, she realized that she had been overly simplistic in her thinking. If she struggled to sell potions in the end, how could she even talk about making money?
With this thought in mind, Zhenzhen immediately wilted like a frostbitten eggplant.
Seeing this, Meng Xingchen began to feel at a loss.
Zhang Feng, being an honest person, wanted to offer advice but didn't know how to go about it.
Lin Yao reached out to Zhenzhen and asked, "Can I take a look at your potion list?"
There was nothing confidential about it, so Zhenzhen casually handed it over.
Lin Yao took it and examined it closely. She discovered that the prices for Yunmengxing's potions were indeed quite high; the cheapest hemostatic potion cost ten thousand star coins. Not to mention other slightly better potions, which generally ranged from tens of thousands to over a hundred thousand star coins.
Most people on Yunmengxing earned around several hundred thousand to a million star coins annually; purchasing potions was considered a significant expense. Naturally, they would seek out shops with effective and reputable products.
As a personal potion maker without volume sales, Zhenzhen's material costs wouldn't be low, and thus her potion prices couldn't be lowered either.
Looking at it this way, she truly had no competitive advantage at all.
"Don't rush to give up just yet," Lin Yao said. "I have a few potion formulas on hand. I can't make money right now to pay your rent, but we can use the potion formulas as rent payment."
Zhenzhen was indeed greatly affected by this news and nodded with little enthusiasm.
