Lin Yao patted her shoulder and said nothing more.
Early the next morning, Meng Xingchen arrived with his belongings. The commotion from moving stirred Su Rui, who had just come in the early hours, causing a dispute between the two. One was a favored child of heaven, while the other came from wealth; neither was willing to back down.
The noise escalated, waking Lin Yao, who had been up all night transcribing the medicinal formulas for the Mingguang Star System. In her anger, she stormed downstairs, grabbing one of them in each hand and dragging them to the gravity training room on the lower floor, where she gave them both a good beating.
Despite Meng Xingchen being at Level Four in physical skills, his combat experience was pitifully low. He could take a few hits, but in front of Lin Yao, that little strength was insignificant. As for Su Rui, his body was as frail as a stick; with physical skills lower than Meng Xingchen's, he couldn't withstand even a couple of blows from Lin Yao.
"Lin Yao, are you really only at Level Three in physical skills? Your combat ability doesn't seem to match," Su Rui gasped in pain while lamenting.
"You have my body data in your hands; how would you not know if I'm at Level Three?"
Meng Xingchen chimed in to support him: "Skill level doesn't represent combat ability. Don't compare my boss's capabilities to your pathetic self."
"I haven't even called you pathetic yet! A Level Four fighter who can't beat a Level Three? Isn't that embarrassing?"
"Of course it's not embarrassing. That's my boss!"
"You have a boss; that makes you special?"
"Absolutely! I have my boss backing me up; you don't. So what now?"
Listening to their petty squabble, Lin Yao felt her head buzzing. If they still had the energy to argue, it clearly meant she hadn't hit them hard enough.
Instantly, both fell silent.
However, there was no shortage of subtle competition between them. Su Rui complained that he hadn't slept all night due to the noise and didn't want to go to the research institute anymore. Meng Xingchen chimed in that to celebrate their Mingguang team’s reunion, he would treat everyone to barbecue that night.
Having beaten them up and feeling satisfied, Lin Yao decided not to pay attention to their covert rivalry. She sought out Zhen Zhen and handed over the medicinal formulas she had transcribed all night.
This is the recipe I organized last night. Can you see if it works?
Zhenzhen was still in a state of despair, but when she handed over a series of recipes, she perked up a little. As she examined the ingredients on the recipes, she became completely alert, and her expression grew more and more excited.
"Captain, are these recipes not officially registered?"
"Should be," Lin Yao replied uncertainly. "Of course, you should verify that. If they are registered, then don’t use them."
"Then these recipes are too precious!"
"Precious? Not really. These are just some watered-down versions of the potions; they’re far inferior to the original ones."
"They were developed because the Mingguang Star System couldn't gather the required materials for the original recipes."
"Even if they are a bit less effective, the ingredients are cheap. Even if we only make half the profit, their price will still be significantly lower than those on the market. I believe these potions, once made and sold, could definitely become the signature products of our potion shop."
"Since you’re confident, then go ahead and use them."
"But it can't just cover the rent like you said. I’ll count you as a shareholder in my potion shop; let’s draft a contract and give you your shares."
"That’s unnecessary."
"What do you mean unnecessary? If you don’t accept shares, I can’t dare to use these potion recipes." Zhenzhen raised her chin defiantly.
Lin Yao sighed in resignation. "Fine, do as you wish."
That evening, Meng Xingchen spent a lot of money buying various exotic meats and charcoal to ask Zhang Feng to help him grill meat.
Lin Yao suddenly thought of the cedar branches in her system space. The last time they grilled meat with those, it smelled quite good, so she took them all out.
"This is what I stocked up last time; let’s use it all up to avoid taking up space."
While taking out the cedar branches, she also noticed a large barrel of spring water and casually took that out as well.
"Just eating grilled meat is too greasy; let’s use this water to make some soup."
Zhang Feng naturally had no objections and specially set up a stove in the yard for grilling meat.
Zhenzhen looked at the pile of messy branches and frowned a bit. "Why didn’t you buy charcoal? Grilling with these branches will take too long."
Zhang Feng smiled and explained, "Don’t underestimate these branches, Sister Zhenzhen. They are top-notch fuel for grilling meat. Meat grilled with cedar branches has a subtle fragrance; it’s especially delicious."
"Really?"
"You'll know once you taste it," he said.
As the aroma of the barbecue grew stronger, it surprisingly attracted Su Rui, who had been sleeping in a cramped room.
"What is that smell? It’s so fragrant!"
"It's just ordinary barbecue. Didn’t you say you looked down on it?" Zhen Zhen replied sarcastically.
Su Rui was taken aback, staring at the grilled meat and stew with a strange expression.
Meng Xingchen spoke without reservation, "What’s wrong? Do you want to eat my barbecue? If you admit your mistake to me, I’ll let you have some."
Su Rui came back to her senses, shot him a sideways glance, and then turned to Zhang Feng. "Why do I feel like your barbecue resembles energy food?"
At this, all four of them turned their eyes toward him.
"Why do you say that?" Lin Yao asked.
"Try using your own abilities to sense it. If you can feel active energy, then it’s energy food."
Hearing this, the others quickly began to try sensing it for themselves. Just as he had said, the energy within the meat Zhang Feng was grilling seemed to come alive, jumping and bursting forth.
It felt as if the raw meat nearby was lifeless; if one didn’t focus on feeling it, they might think there was no energy at all.
"Hey, this pot of vegetable soup seems like energy food too," Zhen Zhen remarked.
Upon hearing this, everyone attempted to sense the simmering soup as well. They too felt the familiar surge of energy, which was even gentler than that of the barbecue.
In an instant, all eyes were back on Zhang Feng.
Zhang Feng felt overwhelmed by their gazes and almost forgot how to grill the meat properly.
"I make the same dishes every day; I can’t suddenly become the energy chef Su Rui mentioned. It must be something else," he insisted.
That made sense to everyone, so they began searching for reasons.
Meng Xingchen had a sudden inspiration. "I remember during our previous exam when Zhang Feng grilled a fragrant pig; the energy contained in it helped me advance in my physical skills. So what do this barbecue and the last one have in common?"
"It’s the cedar branches," Zhang Feng replied. "For both barbecues, the captain gave me cedar branches."
"But I’ve never heard that cedar branches have such effects. Besides, you use cedar branches for grilling meat; what about for the stew?" Meng Xingchen questioned.
"They used an ordinary energy stove for the soup."
