To control the levels of anomalous beasts, the park has long employed a group of high-level abilities. Apart from rescue missions, their primary task is to eliminate those anomalous beasts that are about to advance to level five.
When Meng Xingchen contacted the base in the morning to offer assistance in killing an anomalous beast on the verge of leveling up, the base showed no surprise. They simply required the team to sign an agreement, stating that they would be responsible for their own safety during the battle.
Lin Yao did not negotiate; she promptly signed the agreement and received a hidden positioning system in return. This system was designed to track peak-level four anomalous beasts, and if one was about to level up, its location would turn red and emit a warning.
At that point, the base management would issue a kill order, and nearby security personnel would move in to eliminate the threat. Just as Lin Yao received the positioning system, her wristband emitted a beeping warning—an anomalous beast nearby was about to level up.
Without hesitation, Lin Yao led her teammates to the designated location to kill the beast. However, when they arrived, they found that security personnel were already on site.
Meng Xingchen quickly stepped forward to intercept them. "Let our team handle this beast!"
The security personnel were two tall and muscular men clad in full professional outdoor exploration gear, exuding an air of expertise. They looked at the four members of Mingguang Team with expressions of disdain, as if judging their youth and inexperience.
"You kids are too young for this. Don't come here causing trouble. If you can't take down the beast and end up getting hurt instead, it will only complicate our work!" Their tone was filled with skepticism.
Lin Yao remained unfazed and calmly replied, "Give us twenty minutes. If we can't handle it, feel free to step in without hesitation."
Upon hearing her words, the two security personnel exchanged glances before stepping aside.
The anomalous beast on the verge of leveling up was a Mantis Beast. Its body resembled an oversized mole but had a shell on its back and four legs, along with a pair of scythe-like appendages reminiscent of a mantis.
When it attacked or killed other beasts, it would wield those scythes, earning it the nickname "Reaper." The Mantis Beast ranked high among level four anomalous beasts and was quite challenging to deal with. Its weakness lay in its abdomen; however, that area was well-protected by its scythes, making it dangerous for anyone attempting to strike there.
Zhang Feng suggested, "Then I'll be the main attacker."
"No," Lin Yao countered. "My vines are ineffective against the Mantis Beast; I won't be able to control it well. I'll take on the main attack role this time. Meng Xingchen will handle crowd control while Bai Zhenzhen provides support. Zhang Feng, you flank us!"
This was their first encounter with such a rapidly advancing anomalous beast, and given the need for speed, Lin Yao decided it was best for her to take charge herself.
After two days of battle, everyone had developed a tacit understanding, and no one voiced any objections. Lin Yao took the lead and faced the Mantis Beast head-on.
As the Mantis swung its scythe-like claws to attack, Meng Xingchen unleashed two strands of golden silk to catch the scythe. However, it only held for a moment before the Mantis Beast severed the silk effortlessly.
Meng Xingchen panicked, "No! My gold ability can't hold its scythe!"
Lin Yao waved her hand dismissively. "It's fine. Just slow it down occasionally, and I'll find my own opportunities."
Thus, while Meng Xingchen struggled to restrain the Mantis Beast's scythe, the sounds of clashing echoed as Lin Yao's blade met the beast's weapon in fierce combat. The Mantis Beast had a high resistance to poison, so Bai Zhenzhen's poison abilities had little effect on it; she could only use vines to occasionally entangle its other four legs.
However, since its legs were equipped with sharp hooks, her vines were not much better than Meng Xingchen's golden silk, lasting only a few seconds before being cut through. Zhang Feng could only observe from the sidelines, ready to intervene and save his teammates when they were in danger.
In this way, while they attempted to take down the Mantis Beast, the other three seemed more like a hindrance than help. Lin Yao was gradually wearing down the beast on her own.
"Captain, this isn't working; we're just slowing you down. You should handle it like you did yesterday afternoon," Zhang Feng urged as he watched Lin Yao take more time to kill the Mantis Beast in order to accommodate the others.
The gap in combat power was too vast; the three of them truly couldn't contribute much.
"No, I'm not in a hurry now," Lin Yao replied calmly. "The difference between a Level Four mutant beast and a quasi-Level Five mutant beast isn't significant for me. We have five days for this trial; we can see if there are any opportunities for advancement on the last day!"
After today and tomorrow's battles, she had come to understand something important. Her previous life’s advancements had all been achieved through combat. Although she now inhabited a different body, her mental strength had already adapted to that kind of growth through fighting. This meant that if she wanted to enhance her physical abilities, she still needed to engage in continuous battles.
In this case, fighting alone wasn't much different from fighting alongside teammates. Lin Yao almost single-handedly brought down the quasi-Level Five Mantis Beast, leaving the two safety officers beside her in awe, their gazes shifting from surprise to respect.
"Miss, are you looking for a quasi-Level Five mutant beast? We can guide you!"
Meng Xingchen couldn't stand their cowardly demeanor any longer and impatiently said, "Go away, we have a positioning system. We don't need anyone to lead us."
However, Lin Yao reached out to stop Meng Xingchen and smiled warmly, "Are there any weaker quasi-fifth-level beasts nearby?"
Since she was preparing to train her teammates, Lin Yao planned to start with the lower-tier beasts and gradually work her way up.
"Yes, I can take you there!" one of the safety officers replied eagerly.
Soon after, the safety officer led Lin Yao and her team on a sweeping expedition. Although Lin Yao had become the main force in hunting the beasts, the others could only play a supporting role. However, fighting alongside a skilled warrior allowed her teammates to visibly improve their abilities.
Due to the significant gap in combat power, they had no shortcuts; they could only rely on real battles to enhance their skills.
After completing another day of battling beasts, Lin Yao felt that the barrier to her advancement was diminishing. In a good mood, she thanked the safety officer who guided them and prepared to find a safe house for the night.
Suddenly, both of their wristbands emitted a sharp alarm.
"What’s going on?" Lin Yao asked curiously.
The two safety officers exchanged glances as they looked at the information on their wristbands, their expressions shifting uneasily.
"There’s been a sudden gathering of many quasi-fifth-level beasts in one location!"
"Could it be that a leader-level beast is about to appear?" Meng Xingchen wondered with intrigue.
One of the safety officers shook his head. "I don’t know; we’ve never encountered this situation before."
Lin Yao quickly disagreed. "No, if it were a leader-level beast, it would indiscriminately summon all surrounding beasts, not just quasi-fifth-level ones. Something unusual must be happening there."
The two safety officers exchanged serious looks; the base had issued a summons for everyone to investigate.
