"I'll go with you to take a look," Lin Yao said.
Seeing their hesitation, Meng Xingchen urged, "What’s there to hesitate about? With so many of you, are you afraid of being overwhelmed by a little unexpected situation? Even if, hypothetically, you can’t handle it, the danger is about the same whether we’re on-site or here!"
Meng Xingchen's clever twist of logic left the safety personnel momentarily speechless, and they could only nod in agreement.
Thus, the four members of the Mingguang Team followed the safety personnel as they made their way to the incident site.
"It's too dangerous for you to follow us without knowing the situation," one of the safety officers warned.
Bai Zhenzhen rolled her eyes in annoyance. "I knew you wanted to leave us behind. But if something really dangerous happens, having us around might actually increase your safety!"
Lin Yao found it hard to refute that.
With no other choice, they pressed forward into danger.
As they approached, two safety officers stopped to assess the situation.
Various beast roars echoed around them—hisses, growls, and cries of pain filled the air.
"It doesn’t sound like a gathering of beasts led by a leader; it seems more like a brawl," Lin Yao observed.
"Do you think these mutated beasts have discovered some rare treasure and are fighting over it?" Meng Xingchen boldly speculated.
As soon as he said this, all eyes turned toward him.
Startled, Meng Xingchen quickly assumed a defensive posture. "What are you all looking at me for?"
Bai Zhenzhen gave him a thumbs-up. "I’ve noticed that sometimes your brain works pretty fast."
"Of course!" Meng Xingchen puffed up with pride.
Lin Yao turned to the two safety officers. "How do you usually handle situations like this?"
"We rush in and seize the rare treasures," one officer replied.
"And how do you distribute those treasures?" she asked.
"In situations with higher risk factors, we distribute them based on contribution points."
"So we customers who participate in the battle should also be able to earn contribution points, right?" Lin Yao pressed.
The safety officer was at a loss for words, clearly having never encountered such a scenario before.
"Xingchen, contact their base and ask if we can earn contributions by participating in the battle under these circumstances." Lin Yao decided to have Meng Xingchen ask directly, as it was clear that the two safety officers were not in charge.
There were quite a few gathered beasts, and the base clearly wanted to avoid any delays. They were eager to get started.
As they entered the battlefield, Lin Yao turned to her teammates. "Stay close to me and be careful not to get separated by other beasts."
With that, she led her teammates into the fray. She had assumed that the two safety officers would go off on their own to hunt beasts, but to her surprise, they followed her into battle.
"Miss Lin, let’s fight together!" one of them said.
The two had decent combat abilities, so Lin Yao didn’t refuse their help.
Amidst the roars of various beasts around them, the group began their assault from the outskirts. Lin Yao's killing speed was noticeably faster than when she had fought against quasi-level beasts before.
The two safety officers watched in disbelief. Previously, they had only seen such combat prowess from the top mercenaries outside on the desolate stars, who dispatched beasts with similar efficiency.
Under Lin Yao's leadership, they crazily harvested a small area of quasi-level beasts. After a while, Lin Yao suddenly stopped.
"What’s wrong, boss?" one of her teammates asked.
"My physical skills are about to level up," she replied. Unfortunately, this was a rather dangerous moment.
Of course, when Lin Yao mentioned danger, she wasn’t referring to herself but rather to her teammates behind her. The risk posed by quasi-level beasts was simply too great for them to handle.
"Then hurry up and start! Leveling up won’t wait for anyone. Don’t worry; we’ll protect you!" Bai Zhenzhen said eagerly as she continued to slay beasts.
Lin Yao looked at her teammates, who clearly didn’t understand their own limitations, and felt a mix of frustration and helplessness. But seeing their earnestness, she didn’t want to waste their enthusiasm.
She could only ask the two safety officers for help. "Please keep an eye on my teammates while I level up. Once I’m done, I’ll make sure to take you into battle and help you earn more contributions!"
Both officers nodded in agreement, promising they would do their best.
As Bai Zhenzhen said, advancement waits for no one.
Lin Yao hurriedly gave a few instructions and then sat down to begin her advancement. When advancing in physical techniques, a surge of energy would first arise within her body, creating an urge to break through barriers. At this moment, as long as she operated the physical technique and coordinated her movements, she could smoothly advance.
If she delayed the advancement and suppressed it, the barrier would thicken, making the next advancement twice as difficult. Therefore, despite the precarious situation, Lin Yao had to set aside her concerns and focus on her advancement.
Unbeknownst to her, as she began to advance, the situation in the arena changed dramatically. The previously chaotic battle among the quasi-level beasts transformed into a coordinated assault after a mighty roar from one of them.
The two security personnel exchanged glances, their expressions shifting drastically; it seemed that a commanding-level beast had appeared. We need to evacuate quickly!
Meng Xingchen immediately objected: No way! The boss is still advancing; we absolutely cannot leave her behind!
But with our current strength, if we stay any longer and the beasts surround us, we will surely die a horrible death! one of the security personnel urged.
Then we won’t leave! Meng Xingchen insisted.
Although Bai Zhenzhen and Zhang Feng did not speak, their expressions showed support for Meng Xingchen’s stance. They could not understand why these clearly inexperienced individuals wanted to risk themselves to protect someone else; they simply clasped their hands in apology and said, Sorry, but we cannot continue fighting alongside you here.
Bai Zhenzhen was furious upon hearing this; these people truly were opportunistic. At first, they clung to the captain because of her strong combat ability, but now that danger was imminent, they were quick to flee.
Enough already; what’s there to be angry about? It’s only human nature. Moreover, under these circumstances, those two had already shown considerable loyalty.
Hmph!
Suddenly, Meng Xingchen changed his tone and grinned: It’s fine if they leave; now we can bring out our secret weapon. After all, my dad said that this thing is still classified and can only be used at critical moments for self-preservation!
As he spoke, he reached into his spatial pouch and took out a small spherical object, pressing it against the ground near Lin Yao. Instantly, a semi-transparent dome appeared but vanished just as quickly.
Bai Zhenzhen gasped in amazement: Is this the defensive energy shield that your Meng family is about to launch?
Her rare compliment made Meng Xingchen feel quite pleased: Of course! When it comes to developing something in our Meng family, it’s not that hard!
Before coming here, Lin Yao had asked Meng Xingchen to prepare for this trial but hadn’t expected him to bring such an item. After all, when she signed with the First Research Institute, they hadn’t included anything like this; she never imagined that someone from a pharmaceutical family like the Mengs would produce an energy shield.
