In the days leading up to the start of school, Lin Yao was unable to leave the First Research Institute, as she was forced to comply with the strict regulations on alchemy. If it weren't for Assistant Yuan constantly watching her, Lin Yao would have given up long ago. However, the hardship proved to be effective. After more than ten days of training, Lin Yao's every move in potion-making had become standard enough to serve as a demonstration.
A week before school started, it was time for Bai Zhenzhen to take her special admission exam. Lin Yao had planned to accompany her, but upon hearing that Lin Yao was studying potion-making at the institute, Bai Zhenzhen adamantly refused her offer.
"This opportunity is so rare! If it were me taking the exam, I would be overjoyed! You must not come and distract me halfway through; I’ll have to fight you if you do!"
With such a serious warning, Lin Yao didn’t dare to insist and simply reminded her to be careful. "If you find it too difficult, don’t push yourself too hard. There’s always next year!"
"Don’t jinx me! If I don’t pass, it’ll be your fault for cursing me!"
"Got it. After the exam, remember to come pick me up at the institute." That last sentence was Lin Yao's true sentiment.
"Alright, I’ll visit the institute and pick you up then!"
After twenty days of rigorous training, Bai Zhenzhen found the special admission exam not only manageable but also quite smooth. Once she received her acceptance letter, Meng Xingchen, Zhang Feng, and Bai Zhenzhen happily rushed to the First Research Institute to pick up Lin Yao.
Lin Yao had already obtained three passes from Assistant Yuan, allowing them to enter and tour the institute without any issues. However, these passes were not of the same level as Academician Zheng's; they could only visit less significant areas.
Even so, Bai Zhenzhen was thoroughly satisfied. "Finally getting a chance to tour the First Research Institute! Once school starts and I tell everyone about this, let’s see who dares to compete with me!"
"Pfft! My boss and I have been here for quite a while; you’re not the only one with something interesting to say," Meng Xingchen chimed in, trying to dampen her enthusiasm.
This earned him a flurry of punches from Bai Zhenzhen. "So you think you can just run your mouth?"
In her fury, Bai Zhenzhen even made Lin Yao cautious and quickly pulled Zhang Feng away from her wrath.
After touring the First Research Institute, the four of them headed together to a small villa.
"Hurry up and pack your things; we start living in the dorm tomorrow," Bai Zhenzhen said impatiently, pouting. "The reason I didn't choose First Middle School is because of this. Everyone is forced to stay in the dorms. I've never shared a room with anyone before!"
"When we took the military starship for the practical exam, weren't you staying in a dorm?" Meng Xingchen replied.
"Are you trying to argue with me?"
"No, I'm just stating facts."
"I was exhausted back then; I slept through two days straight. Besides, that was only for two days. Living in a dorm means sharing a space for three years. How can that be the same?"
"Even if you don't want to, there's no way around it."
On the calendar of Yunmeng Star, it was the first day of school at First Middle School.
The four of them set off lightly to register at the school.
As they approached the campus, they heard an announcement: "Discovery of the First Middle School check-in point. Would you like to spend points to check in?"
Lin Yao immediately selected to check in.
"Check-in successful! You have received the map of First Middle School and a brief introduction to all faculty members."
Before they could even look at it, the public hover vehicle stopped at the school gate.
As soon as the doors opened, they were greeted by a cacophony of lively voices.
"Mechanics, report here for registration!"
"Pharmacy, this way!"
"Combat, all combat students come over here!"
"Information Technology, those choosing Information Technology come this way!"
Meng Xingchen watched for a moment before getting restless. "Boss, I see Mechanics! I'm signing up!"
He then casually pulled Bai Zhenzhen along. "Come on, your Pharmacy is right next to Mechanics; let's go together."
Bai Zhenzhen shook off his hand. "Let go of me; I can walk by myself." After brushing off Meng Xingchen, she turned to Lin Yao and asked, "Captain, do you want me to accompany you for registration?"
Lin Yao waved her hand at them. "No need; I'll be fine with Zhang Feng."
"I'm leaving now."
After the two of them departed, Lin Yao and Zhang Feng headed to the registration area for the combat competition. Combat had always been a popular event at the First Middle School, and by the time they arrived, there was already a long line.
The registration process was quick; all they needed to do was present their acceptance notification on their holographic device. The staff would simply scan it with a device, and that would complete the registration.
Soon, it was Lin Yao's turn. She had pulled up her acceptance notification in advance and waited patiently. Once the person in front of her finished scanning, she mimicked their actions and prepared to leave. However, to her surprise, there was no beep indicating successful registration.
While she was still in a daze, the staff member at the registration desk called out to her. "Excuse me, but you're not registered for combat."
"I clearly signed up for combat and got accepted. How could this happen?" Lin Yao exclaimed as she opened the detailed information of her acceptance notification. To her dismay, she discovered that she had been accepted into the Command program instead.
"Wait, why was I accepted into Command?"
The staff member at the registration desk looked at her in surprise before slowly explaining, "Students in the Command program at the First Middle School do not need to register; they are selected by the school based on merit. When you received your acceptance notification, you were given the option to either continue in your chosen major or switch to Command."
Upon hearing this, Lin Yao felt like crying. Coming from a place without access to the Star Network, she wasn't used to being glued to her holographic device every day. When she received her acceptance notification and saw that part of it indicated she had been accepted, she didn’t bother to check further or confirm anything. As a result, the school assumed she agreed to enroll in Command.
"Is there any way I can switch majors now?" Lin Yao asked hopefully.
The registration staff chuckled softly and replied, "You know, many students aspire to join Command but can't even get in. And here you are thinking about rejecting it."
"I just want something simpler," Lin Yao said.
"Your situation is unprecedented," the staff member continued. "You can register for Command first and then consult with school leadership afterward about switching majors once registration is complete."
With no other options available, Lin Yao could only grimace as she bid farewell to Zhang Feng. "You go ahead and register first. I'll figure out what to do after I register for Command."
With that, Lin Yao began searching for the Command registration area throughout the venue. However, no matter how hard she looked, she couldn't find it. In the end, she approached an upperclassman for help.
"You must know about this year's new approach for Command registrations," he said with a grin. "The Star Network has posted a challenge; you all have to find your own registration area!"
