"How silly! I'm leaving now!"
After Lin Yao walked away, Wang Jincheng smugly showed his communicator to Yao Beiluo. "Did you see? Lin Yao added me! She didn't even think to add you while she was at it."
Yao Beiluo shot him a mocking glance. "You don't know? I've been in her contacts for a while now."
"No way! When did you add her?"
"Right after the practical exam."
"Damn it! This kid got ahead of me again!"
After a few of them left, the new students of the Command Department began notifying each other and gradually completed their registrations.
The warning that was supposed to intimidate the juniors turned into a complete joke due to Lin Yao's interference. After the three of them parted ways, Lin Yao headed to the office of the Director of the Command Department.
The Director, Shang Rong, was a refined middle-aged man. Upon hearing Lin Yao's intentions, his smile momentarily faltered. "Student, did you just say you want to transfer departments?"
"Yes."
"Do you realize that this opportunity is something many people wish they could have but cannot?" The director spoke earnestly.
"I understand. However, I still want to transfer back to the Combat Department. Is that possible?"
It had always been the case that students were removed from the Command Department; there had never been a situation where a student requested to leave on their own. "Given your circumstances, I will need to report this to my superiors."
Lin Yao frowned slightly, feeling a bit irritated. Matters that required reporting up the chain often ended in mutual deflection and were likely to be rejected in the end.
If it’s going to be such a hassle, then I might as well forget it. She simply wanted to focus on improving her skills and didn’t want to get entangled in these trivial matters. Since it wasn’t feasible with the director, she would just have to look for other opportunities in the future.
"Student, what you're doing is wise. Acting impulsively will only lead to regret; it's better to study diligently in the Command Department," Shang Rong advised with a serious expression, but his words sounded somewhat grating to Lin Yao.
The First Military Academy was known for its strict regulations and was notorious for having a male-to-female ratio that heavily favored males. This imbalance was most evident in the distribution of dormitories.
The girls' dormitory occupied one building, while the boys' dormitory took up several buildings. The ratio between them was astonishingly skewed. As a result, many programs had only one or two female applicants. For instance, in the Command Department where Lin Yao studied, as well as in the Combat Department, Mechanical Engineering Department, Information Technology Department, and others, if a program had too few females to fill a dorm room of four, they would be mixed into dorms of other departments.
Lin Yao was assigned to a completely mixed dormitory, and it was quite a mix at that. She only realized this after entering the dorm and introducing herself to her roommates.
"Hello, I’m Ye Yun, from the Logistics Department," said a gentle and refined girl who spoke first.
Standing next to her was a tall girl, nearly six feet tall, with a slightly chubby, cute face. Her personality seemed shy. "I’m Wan Xiaoqi, from the Combat Department."
The last one was a cool girl dressed in dark attire, exuding an aura of confidence. While rubbing her holographic device, she coldly introduced herself, "You Mi, Information Technology."
Lin Yao smiled slightly and said, "Hello everyone, I’m Lin Yao, from the Command Department!"
"Wow, you’re from the Command Department! That’s impressive!" Ye Yun exclaimed sincerely, filled with admiration.
"It’s nothing special," Lin Yao replied nonchalantly.
"Since we’re all roommates, let’s go to the cafeteria together today to celebrate!" Ye Yun suggested.
Wan Xiaoqi, the strong girl with a baby face, was the first to respond. "Sure! The food at the Third Cafeteria is really delicious; let’s go there!"
"I... I think I’ll pass," You Mi said hesitantly.
Ye Yun tugged at her. "We’ll be living together for three years; we should get to know each other better!"
You Mi rubbed her holographic device and kept her lips pressed together in silence.
Seeing this behavior reminded Lin Yao of another socially anxious boy she had met before. She kindly said, "If you’re not comfortable, just do what you want; you don’t have to worry about us."
"Is that okay?" You Mi's eyes brightened as she looked up at Lin Yao's smiling face but quickly lowered her gaze again.
"There’s no problem at all; just be yourself," Lin Yao reassured her.
During dinner, they witnessed an interesting scene. The other three girls each took their meals and chatted while eating. In contrast, You Mi quickly finished her dinner and then pulled out a holographic screen and keyboard from her device, typing away intently.
The aura of You Mi while typing was completely different from her earlier demeanor; there was an indescribable sense of calm and comfort about her.
"She has severe social anxiety; she feels uncomfortable around people. Only when she has something familiar in her hands does she feel secure," Lin Yao explained to her two roommates who were staring in amazement.
Wan Xiaoqi covered her mouth in surprise. I thought I was too shy to initiate conversations with others, but this place truly felt like the embodiment of social anxiety.
