Lin Yao scanned Xie Zhuo's level and abilities with a keen eye. His physical skills were around level seven, and his ability was earth-based, also roughly at level seven.
Fighting against someone stronger was always a hassle for Lin Yao, especially when it came to earth abilities. They lacked flexibility but provided comprehensive defense, making it nearly impossible to find a flaw—she felt completely at a loss.
However, this time she was focused on training her resilience to attacks and wasn't concerned about counterattacking; she just needed to endure the hits.
Xie Zhuo, on the other hand, was dissatisfied with her passive approach. "Lin Yao, you need to attack. Aren't you training your resilience? You should give it your all. If you're only learning to take hits without synchronizing your other skills, how will you improve?"
"Alright then," she conceded.
Once she committed fully, Lin Yao began to understand the instructor's good intentions. The stamina and energy consumed from purely defending were completely different from those expended during an all-out fight. To make progress, she had to engage in both aspects simultaneously without letting up.
It was frustrating that in their past lives they hadn't had such good conditions or professional training; perhaps the final outcome wouldn't have been so tragic if they had.
But Lin Yao only thought about this briefly.
She had ample combat experience that matched or even surpassed Xie Zhuo's. It wasn't easy for him to land a hit on her at first. He could only pin her down once her stamina began to wane and she couldn't keep up in various aspects.
"Your fighting ability is completely unlike that of a student your age," Xie Zhuo couldn't help but praise.
"Ha! You should have seen that during the practical exam," Lin Yao replied with a grin.
"Huh?"
Taking advantage of Xie Zhuo's momentary distraction, Lin Yao landed a punch squarely on his face.
"You were the one who helped me take down that level four giant python!" she laughed.
"You recognized me right away?" he asked, surprised.
"Of course! I calculated my chances with you in mind. I was worried about retaliation, so I made sure to remember your face."
Xie Zhuo shook his head with a chuckle. "You are truly extraordinary as a student. By the time you reach my level, you'll probably be the one dominating me."
As he spoke, he threw a punch that knocked Lin Yao down to the ground.
Not one to back down easily, Lin Yao quickly got back up and charged at him again.
"Don't worry; when that time comes, I'll definitely go easy on you," she said confidently.
Having confidence is great, but being too cocky can lead to consequences.
"It doesn't matter; I'm here to take hits anyway!" she retorted boldly.
"Alright then, I'll oblige you and make sure you can't get back up."
The training session the following day concluded with everyone else in decent shape, except for Lin Yao, the most capable among them, who was unable to get up and had to be carried by Wan Xiaoqi.
Bai Zhenzhen watched with a smirk. "Captain, don't you feel embarrassed?"
"Of course there's a bit of embarrassment," Lin Yao replied, her tone defiant. "But what's more important is to keep my mouth shut. Why worry about face when gaining strength is what truly matters?"
Wan Xiaoqi chimed in, "Exactly! If I had Lin Yao's strength, I wouldn't mind getting beaten up like that."
"Let's not go there. With your build, we’d probably need a few people to carry you," Bai Zhenzhen retorted, only realizing after the words left her mouth that she was speaking to someone she wasn't very familiar with, rather than engaging in banter with Meng Xingchen.
"Oh, I'm sorry!" she quickly apologized.
"It's fine! You all get along so well as teammates, without any ulterior motives. I actually envy that!" Wan Xiaoqi responded cheerfully.
"Then how about joining our Mingguang Squad?" Bai Zhenzhen suggested, glancing at Lin Yao still being held by Wan Xiaoqi. "Captain, what do you think about letting her join us?"
Wan Xiaoqi was strong and had a good personality. Although they had only known each other for two or three days, Bai Zhenzhen felt a good rapport with her.
"Sure!" Wan Xiaoqi agreed readily.
In the Yunmeng Star System's expeditionary force, teams operated as combat units. Therefore, as a reserve military force, the First Academy could also register teams.
The intermediate schools had the most teams. After registration, exams, field training, and various competitions could all be conducted on a team basis.
Since Mingguang Squad did not have enough members to meet the minimum registration requirement, they hadn't registered yet. Before school started, Lin Yao had mentioned a few potential teammates and encouraged them to invite suitable candidates.
Perhaps everyone had high standards for their teammates or cared more about harmonious interactions among team members; thus, their squad had always been selective when it came to recruitment.
"Alright then, once I leave my previous team, I'll join your Mingguang Squad," Wan Xiaoqi said decisively.
"Oh, you were part of another team? Is it okay for you to leave?" Bai Zhenzhen asked.
"It's fine; they can't beat me anyway." Wan Xiaoqi smiled sweetly, which contrasted sharply with her tall stature.
Bai Zhenzhen couldn't help but chuckle at her adorable demeanor. "Xiaoqi, I've realized you have a cute girl face!"
"Really?" Wan Xiaoqi asked excitedly.
"Definitely! Once military training is over, I'll give you a makeover; you'll definitely become a big cute girl!" Bai Zhenzhen exclaimed.
"Wow, just thinking about it makes me excited!"
Lin Yao felt somewhat out of place in this conversation. As she sensed her strength returning slightly, she asked Wan Xiaoqi to set her down.
"You two enjoy your chat; don’t mind me. I can walk slowly on my own."
The two of them were still a bit uneasy. At that moment, Wang Jincheng quickly approached and said, "Don't worry, I'll take care of Lin Yao." Although Wang Jincheng's personality was somewhat unreliable, his character was trustworthy.
With that, the two of them left Lin Yao behind and happily continued to gather together to do their makeup. Wang Jincheng supported Lin Yao, who was walking slowly, and let out a grunt from his nose. Lin Yao turned to glance at him but didn't pay much attention.
Before long, Wang Jincheng grunted again, this time louder than before. Lin Yao couldn't pretend not to hear him. "What's wrong with you? Is your nose acting up?"
"Is your team still recruiting?" Lin Yao asked with a hint of amusement.
"Why are you being so awkward, you good-hearted youth?"
"Well, why don't you ask me then?"
"I already asked you before!"
"Can't you just ask me again?"
"That wouldn't be good. What if you really don't want to come? I wouldn't want to cause you any trouble," Lin Yao teased him.
Wang Jincheng shot her a sideways glance. "During the practical exam, you beat me up in front of so many people and weren't worried about causing me any trouble."
"That's because out of all those people, you were the strongest and had the best mental fortitude!"
That was indeed true. Among the three team leaders, Zhou Heng had lower combat ability and seemed somewhat insincere, while Yao Beiluo overthought everything. Only Wang Jincheng had enough fighting power, could take a hit, and was carefree.
Picking on him meant there was no worry about hurting the young man's pride or him causing trouble behind the scenes after admitting defeat. Fortunately, Wang Jincheng was unaware of Lin Yao's true thoughts; otherwise, the cheerful expression on his face would likely fade away.
