Considering that Lin Yao had training tomorrow, Zhao Chuan let her leave.
"Are you not planning to finish yet?"
"I'm almost done. I'll finish up and then go. You should head back early; if you're not well-rested, it won't be effective for your training."
"Research can be quite exhausting."
To avoid affecting her training performance the next day, even though she still had some energy left, she decided to listen and go rest.
"Alright, I’ll head out first."
After bidding farewell to Zhao Chuan, Lin Yao left the laboratory and headed to the doctor's on-call dormitory's rest area to sleep. Fortunately, the laboratory was located within the military hospital, so Lin Yao only needed to cross a corridor to reach the doctor's quarters.
At two in the morning, it was the perfect time for deep sleep, and the entire hospital was quiet. To avoid disturbing anyone, Lin Yao tried to tread lightly.
As she walked quietly for a while, she suddenly heard a rustling sound.
This sound was familiar to Lin Yao; it was the sound of someone running quickly.
At this hour, who else but patrolling soldiers would be out running around?
Curious, Lin Yao turned her gaze toward the direction of the sound and saw a figure moving stealthily, darting and dodging until it vanished from sight.
Such behavior definitely raised suspicions.
Lin Yao opened her holographic device, intending to contact her instructor but hesitated, fearing it might just be a false alarm. Instead, she decided to follow the figure first and see what was going on.
Opening the signed base map, she stealthily followed the route where the person had disappeared.
Eventually, she spotted that person's silhouette in front of the entrance to the **Pharmaceutical Warehouse**, as indicated on the system map.
Watching as the figure lingered at the entrance of the warehouse, Lin Yao speculated: Could this person be trying to steal drugs?
To her surprise, after a short while, the person's holographic device suddenly lit up. The individual scanned it against the access control panel, and the door to the pharmaceutical warehouse opened.
A pharmaceutical warehouse in a military base hospital—such an important place—was opened so easily?
Lin Yao felt a momentary shock but quickly regained her composure. Seeing that person enter the warehouse, she hurriedly followed behind.
Perhaps for convenience's sake, the person didn’t turn on any lights and moved in darkness towards a particular medicine cabinet.
With their back turned towards her, Lin Yao could only see from a distance as that person fiddled with something there; she couldn’t discern exactly what they were doing.
After finishing whatever they were up to, that person slipped out into the darkness again.
As Lin Yao contemplated whether to investigate what that person had done at the medicine cabinet or follow them outside, she hesitated for a moment.
With that, the door slammed shut with a swipe.
Lin Yao tried to leave, but she needed a card to exit, and without one, she knew she was stuck. Frustrated by her own ignorance of technology, she could only pat her head in resignation.
After a moment of annoyance, she thought that since she couldn’t get out, she might as well check the potion cabinet where that person had lingered.
Opening her holographic device, Lin Yao was greeted by a faint glow that illuminated the label on the cabinet: Body Repair Potion. Looking inside, she noticed the potions emitted a faint green light.
This seemed a bit unusual.
Instinctively, Lin Yao reached for the cabinet door to inspect the potions further. However, as soon as her hand touched the door, an alarm blared loudly.
Caught in the potion storage room, Lin Yao felt a wave of frustration wash over her for her own ignorance.
In the interrogation room, Lin Yao was restrained with her abilities suppressed and locked into a high-alloy chair.
“What’s your name?”
“Lin Yao,” she replied weakly.
“What’s your identity?”
“I’m a student participating in military training at First High School.”
The soldier conducting the interrogation raised an eyebrow but said nothing further.
“What were you doing in the potion storage?”
“If I say I followed someone into the potion storage, would you believe me?” Lin Yao straightened up and replied earnestly.
The interrogator looked at her with skepticism, as if saying "You’re making this up."
“It’s absurd for a military training student to be here at this hour, and you come up with such an excuse.”
Lin Yao shrugged helplessly. “If you don’t believe me, could you please contact Zhao Chuan? Dr. Zhao?”
The two interrogators exchanged glances before one of them firmly stated, “No matter what your relationship with Dr. Zhao is, your presence in the potion storage is an undeniable fact. Even Dr. Zhao can’t save you from this.”
“I’m not trying to evade reality,” Lin Yao insisted. “But Dr. Zhao can explain why I’m here at this hour.”
Hearing her confidence made both interrogators hesitate slightly.
“Dr. Zhao is still in the laboratory; you can contact him if you wish.”
After a moment of silence, one of them finally stood up and left the room.
Unsure whether to consult a superior or directly contact Zhao Chuan, the person left, leaving Lin Yao and another interrogator staring at each other in silence. After a while, Lin Yao grew tired of the standoff and leaned back in her chair, closing her eyes to rest.
The interrogator was visibly frustrated; he had likely never encountered such an arrogant suspect before. He slammed his hand on the table and barked, "You need to show a more proper attitude!"
"Is it that you haven't caught anyone in a long time?" Lin Yao replied lazily, casting him a sidelong glance.
The interrogator faltered, realizing he lacked experience in interrogation and couldn’t match her composure. He was infuriated; this was the military base of Yunmeng Star—who would dare to cause trouble here?
"So, you all have been lax in your defenses? Even I, a mere student, could easily sneak into the military hospital's pharmacy warehouse?"
Her words turned the interrogator's face red with anger, yet he struggled to find a retort. Fortunately, at that moment, another interrogator finally entered with a weary Zhao Chuan.
Upon seeing Lin Yao, Zhao Chuan's brow furrowed even deeper. "Lin Yao, didn’t I tell you to go get some sleep? Why did you run off to the pharmacy research institute?"
"It's complicated!" Lin Yao explained how she had spotted a suspicious figure and followed them to the pharmacy warehouse, only to end up getting caught.
As she recounted her tale, not only did Zhao Chuan look speechless, but both interrogators wore expressions of disbelief as well. If they called her foolish, she had still managed to follow someone without being detected; if they called her clever, she had let the person escape while getting herself caught.
"You really are something," one of them muttered.
"The drugs in that cabinet must be problematic; you should check them out," Zhao Chuan suggested.
Investigating the drugs was straightforward enough, but the key question remained: how could she prove her innocence?
"If there’s something wrong with the drugs, can’t that prove my innocence?" Lin Yao countered.
"Of course not. You might even be suspected of being behind the drug issues," Zhao Chuan shattered her hopes bluntly.
Lin Yao sighed in resignation; it seemed there was no clear way out of this mess.
"I poison someone and then report it? What would I gain from that?"
"Who knows?" Zhao Chuan shrugged.
