Lin Yao's first match was against a student from an ability academy, a tall and robust individual, similar in build to Zhang Feng. However, having the same physique did not equate to having the same strength. With only a fourth-level physical technique, Lin Yao easily secured victory.
After waiting for more than ten minutes, it was time for the second match, which surprisingly pitted her against her classmate Chen Meng. His strength was slightly higher than Wang Jincheng's but lower than Zhang Feng's. Lin Yao estimated that with his abilities, he should be able to make it into the top ten. Since she was in the match, Chen Meng fought without holding back, truly giving it his all, which made Lin Yao expend a bit more time before she finally won.
The subsequent matches posed little pressure for Lin Yao. The only slightly tricky opponents were Yao Beiluo and two experts from Xingfang No. 1 High School, as well as Zhang Feng. Yao Beiluo was cunning and versatile; even though his strength was inferior to hers, he could still engage her for quite some time.
The two experts from Xingfang No. 1 High School had distinct styles. One was incredibly agile, striking like lightning and aiming for quick kills. Lin Yao found herself needing to be cautious and spend extra time to bring him down. The other was like an indestructible cockroach, with exceptional resistance to blows; unless he could be knocked off the stage, he would wear down his opponent's stamina and then rely on his immense endurance to turn the tables.
Zhang Feng relied on pure physical technique pressure. Although they were only one level apart, the gap between primary and intermediate physical techniques was far from ordinary. Especially after enduring over ten matches prior, Lin Yao had already exhausted much of her stamina, making her encounter with Zhang Feng even more challenging.
Fortunately, thanks to her rich experience from her previous life and strong resilience, she managed to push through despite being drained and covered in bruises, ultimately claiming victory in this match.
"Captain, battling with you is always exhilarating," Zhang Feng exclaimed as Lin Yao kicked him off the stage.
Lin Yao wiped the sweat from her brow and smiled, "Then you better grow quickly; don’t just enjoy yourself."
"I will do my best, Captain!" Zhang Feng replied earnestly.
The final results of the competition did not disappoint either. Lin Yao took first place, Zhang Feng second, Yao Beiluo fifth, Chen Meng tenth, and Wang Jincheng thirteenth. The First Middle School claimed both first and second places and secured four spots in the top ten—a resounding victory.
Due to the lengthy duration of the fighting finals, by the time the matches concluded, it was already past nine o'clock in the evening. To prepare for tomorrow's competition, teachers from various schools urged their energetic students to return for some rest.
Lin Yao had exhausted most of her energy for the day and was preparing to head back early to rest when suddenly, Yao Beiluo ran over to find her.
"Can we talk outside?"
Lin Yao glanced at the time; there was still half an hour until lights out at ten. She nodded in agreement.
The two of them stepped outside the dormitory and found a set of steps to sit on.
"What do you want to talk about?" Lin Yao asked.
"During the shooting competition today, that behavior of yours was unlike your usual self."
"What do you mean by that?"
"You were a bit too showy," Yao Beiluo frowned.
As someone known as the first genius of Yunmeng Star, he understood that "the nail that sticks out gets hammered down." He couldn't believe that Lin Yao didn’t know this. Moreover, she gave him the impression of being a very wise person. She was decisive and always knew when to stand out and when to hold back. When she could remain low-key, she would never force herself into the spotlight, skillfully concealing her abilities.
By the second round of the shooting competition today, she had already secured first place. In the third round, she could have easily eased up a bit, yet she chose to shine even brighter. This was truly unlike her character.
Lin Yao smiled lightly, "Maybe I just wanted to show off."
"You’re not that kind of person!" Yao Beiluo asserted with certainty.
"You know me so well?"
"I don’t know you well, but I know you’re not someone who seeks attention."
Lin Yao leaned closer to Yao Beiluo, whispering teasingly in his ear, "You’re quite sensitive, aren’t you? But for now, I can’t tell you the reason."
"Oh!"
"Be a bit more vigilant these next few days and stay safe. Once military training is over, things will settle down."
"I understand," Yao Beiluo replied thoughtfully.
Lin Yao stood up and patted his shoulder. "Now, don’t think about anything else. Get some sleep."
Around two in the morning, Lin Yao felt the thread of mental energy she had left on Xiang Shangrong being tugged at. Earlier in the day, worried that she might lose track of him, Lin Yao had left a thread of mental energy on him and designated it within the confines of the new military training camp. As long as he remained within this area, she would receive a warning if he ventured beyond it.
Her psychic ability was supposed to reach an intermediate level before she could possess this capability. However, for the sake of this spy mission, she pushed her mental strength beyond her physical limits, resulting in a backlash. Fortunately, she had plenty of potions on hand; otherwise, today's competition would likely have ended in disaster.
Considering the effort she had already put in, Lin Yao hesitated for a moment but ultimately decided to get up and take a look. To avoid being discovered by her roommate, she used her psychic power to give everyone a sleep suggestion before confidently stepping outside.
Following the thread of her psychic energy, Lin Yao tracked Xiang Shangrong to the entrance of the military base. Strangely enough, he did not enter but lingered in the bushes near the gate for about half an hour before leaving. Lin Yao was puzzled but did not dare to investigate further. She knew too little about technology; if she approached and inadvertently alarmed anyone, it could ruin the military base's plans.
However, she couldn't report this to Xie Zhuo without explaining how she knew. Yet ignoring it completely made her uneasy. Just as she was wrestling with what to do, Lin Yao noticed a patrol team approaching from the side. Seizing the opportunity, she picked up a stone from the ground and used her wood-based ability to toss it into the bushes.
"Who’s there?" The patrol team immediately followed her cue and headed toward the bushes. Seeing this, Lin Yao quickly sneaked back to her dormitory.
The next morning during breakfast, Lin Yao discreetly messaged Xie Zhuo to inquire if anything had happened last night.
Xie Zhuo replied: "Nothing much. But I want to remind you again—if you discover anything today, keep your composure."
Lin Yao sent him an eye-roll emoji in response. Not only was he withholding information from her, but he also felt the need to warn her again!
She felt slightly annoyed but quickly brushed it off. Today’s competition consisted of only one event: a hundred-kilometer negative cross-country run. This particular event assessed a wide range of skills.
The jungle at the military base was not as well-maintained as that in the safe urban areas; it contained deliberately left third-level beasts that had not been eliminated. During the negative cross-country run, participants needed not only good stamina and resilience but also quick reflexes and combat abilities; otherwise, they risked being taken down by wild beasts before reaching the finish line.
