Rushing into the forest, Lin Yao sprinted for over a thousand meters until she found a soldier hiding in a tree. With a swift movement, she used a vine to flip herself up and appeared before the concealed soldier.
“How did you find me?” The soldier's serious expression cracked instantly.
Lin Yao smiled gently, reassuring him, “You didn’t expose yourselves; I’m the only one who knows you’re here.”
The soldier replied, “I didn’t want to disturb you, but we suddenly lost signal on our communicator. We’re not sure what’s wrong. Can you check if you can still contact the base?”
He looked at her with skepticism, but when he saw her communicator had no signal, he reluctantly opened his own military communicator.
“I still have signal here,” he said.
“Can you try to contact the base?” Lin Yao asked.
The soldier hesitated, “We have regulations. Unless it’s an emergency, we can’t contact the base without permission.”
“Can you at least reach out to your superior to inquire about the signal situation?”
Though he was initially unwilling, seeing Lin Yao’s hopeful expression made him relent and contact his superior.
In the end, he received only one response: “Everything is normal. Please focus on your mission and don’t get distracted!”
This response surprised Lin Yao, but seeing the soldier’s wary and defensive look towards her, she could only retreat back to where she came from.
“Everything is normal?” Upon hearing Lin Yao's report, everyone breathed a sigh of relief. Only You Mi showed a thoughtful expression.
“What’s on your mind, You Mi?” Lin Yao asked.
“I… I feel something is off,” You Mi said quietly.
Understanding You Mi's tendency to worry, Lin Yao comforted her, “If you’re not comfortable speaking too much, you can write it down on your communicator.”
“Even without signal, other functions of the communicator should still work,” she added.
Quickly, You Mi pulled out her communicator and opened the writing pad. She wrote: “Military bases generally have at least two sets of signal systems. If one system fails, the second one should activate immediately. Five minutes before Meng Xingchen noticed there was no signal, I had checked my communicator, so the signal didn’t just drop suddenly. It feels more like someone has jammed the signals.”
“Someone has jammed the signals…”
There was no need to think hard; it was definitely the work of spies. The question remained: what were they trying to achieve by jamming the signals?
"Is there any way to break the signal jamming?" Lin Yao asked You Mi.
"It depends on whether it's information jamming or physical jamming. Information jamming can potentially be cracked, but for physical jamming, we need to find the source of the interference. However, to implement information jamming at a military base requires significant capabilities," You Mi explained.
"Then it's likely physical jamming," Lin Yao concluded.
She didn't understand much about such high-tech matters and didn't want to worry about it; it wasn't her responsibility anyway. With so many people stationed at the military base, she believed they would be able to handle it. "Let's just continue with the competition," she said nonchalantly.
Meng Xingchen asked with concern, "Are we really going to continue the competition?"
"What else would we do? Go back to the base? No way," Zhen Zhen rolled her eyes at him.
Ye Yun, aware of her own abilities, agreed, "Exactly. Continuing the competition is our best option. The signal is jammed; if something really happens at the base, we won't be able to help if we go back. We might even become a liability. It's better to stay hidden in the jungle for now; at least we can protect ourselves."
Meng Xingchen asked in confusion, "But why run? Can't we just stay put?"
"Waiting around will only increase our fear. It's better to keep ourselves occupied," Zhang Feng said, having dealt with exotic beasts before and having more experience in crisis situations.
So they continued moving forward at a steady pace.
However, after running for only half an hour, they heard a group of people ahead shouting about a beast tide and excitedly running back.
As they shouted, those who were unaware of the situation became confused.
They stood there in a daze, unsure whether to believe what they heard and join in their retreat or continue moving forward.
Lin Yao noticed that those running back were either speed-type abilities or had abilities that enhanced their speed; they were likely the fastest among them. The fact that they were returning now suggested something serious had happened ahead.
However, even if something had occurred up front, she couldn't let this group continue shouting like that; it would cause chaos behind them. Given the current situation at the base, they couldn't let them return either.
Thinking this through, Lin Yao quickly took action and used vines to ensnare those rushing back.
Some tried to struggle but were quickly bound up like rice dumplings by Lin Yao's vines.
"Everyone stop! Can someone tell me what exactly happened up front?" she demanded.
At that moment, a boy recognized Lin Yao and said, "You're Lin Yao?"
"I am," Lin Yao nodded.
The boy swallowed hard and calmed his nerves before saying, "There are multiple exotic beasts appearing ahead. I saw some people get injured. Then someone mentioned a beast tide, but I didn't see clearly and just ran back."
Lin Yao frowned. "If there really is a beast tide, you shouldn't be shouting and running back like this! It will only cause panic!"
We just want to return to the base and call for help.
You may not know, but there’s no signal in the light brain burst zone. We suspect that something might have gone wrong at the base as well. Lin Yao cruelly shattered their hopes.
As they followed her back, everyone showed expressions of terror.
What... what should we do?
We can only find a way to save ourselves, Lin Yao replied.
We are still just students; how can we save ourselves? a girl said, her voice trembling with tears.
Lin Yao pointed to the crowd gathering in the jungle to listen for news: There are over fifty thousand of us. It’s unlikely that there are so many mutated beasts around the base.
I estimate that there are at most a few thousand mutated beasts in the jungle. With so many of us, we could easily take them down, Meng Xingchen chimed in.
So what should we do?
You all stay put for now. I’ll go ahead and assess the situation, then report back, Lin Yao instructed.
After finishing her words, she turned to her teammates: Zhang Feng, you and the others stay here for now. Organize the people and make sure they don’t run around or speak out of turn. Also, gather anyone who comes from behind; hold your ground until I check out the situation ahead and inform you of our next steps.
Got it, Captain, Zhang Feng replied earnestly with a nod.
Lin Yao glanced around to ensure everything was fine before sprinting ahead at full speed.
On the way, Lin Yao caught up with Wang Jincheng, who was also rushing forward.
Wang Jincheng instinctively dodged slightly but realized she wasn’t there to catch him; she brushed past him and continued moving quickly. He hurriedly sped up to catch up and asked, Captain, where are you going?
Something has happened up ahead; keep up! Lin Yao said without slowing down.
Seeing her serious expression, Wang Jincheng didn’t dare say more and obediently followed behind her.
After about twenty minutes of running, they heard chaotic sounds coming from ahead.
Ah! Help!
Help! A mutated beast is attacking me!
Don’t run! There aren’t many mutated beasts; everyone organize together and fight!
Where’s the class leader? Where did the class leader go? Are any class officers here? Quickly organize everyone to resist together!
Various mutated beasts and people were mixed together; those who could fight and those who couldn’t created a chaotic scene without any effective resistance forming.
If this continues, many students ahead will face needless sacrifices.
