The Five Beasts were momentarily stunned by the electric powers, letting out a squeak before being captured by the abilities of other soldiers.
When Lin Yao and Yao Beiluo arrived, they saw the Five Beast being secured in a specialized cage. They hadn’t made it in time for the battle, but neither of them was worried; where there was one Five Beast, there would surely be a nest nearby.
Quietly channeling her wood abilities, Lin Yao communicated with the surrounding plants to locate the Five Beasts' lair. Guided by the vegetation, she quickly discovered their underground den. She directed the logistics personnel to the location, and under the team leader's arrangement, an earth ability user began to excavate the den.
Startled, the Five Beasts bolted out in all directions from their lair. The team leader had already stationed personnel at each escape route. Therefore, before the fleeing beasts could get far, they were caught by soldiers using their powers.
During this time, Lin Yao and her companions coordinated well with this group and were fortunate enough to intercept one of the Five Beasts in their designated direction. However, unfortunately for them, two beasts managed to escape toward their side.
Just as Lin Yao was about to intercept one herself and instruct Wang Jincheng and Yao Beiluo to handle the other, Wang Jincheng suddenly shouted, "Captain, let me catch this one on my own!" Considering that he had been relatively obedient lately and that the difficulty of subduing the Five Beasts wasn't too high, Lin Yao decided to let him go for it.
With Yao Beiluo's metal abilities complementing her wood powers, they quickly subdued their designated beast. However, when they turned back to find Wang Jincheng, he was nowhere to be seen.
Lin Yao's expression changed slightly as she hurriedly followed the traces of battle he had left behind. Yao Beiluo quickly followed suit.
When they finally found Wang Jincheng, he was mercilessly beating a Five Beast until it was bloodied and bruised, shouting, "Run! Why aren’t you running anymore?"
Seeing that he was unharmed relieved Lin Yao somewhat, but his reckless departure from the group still left her feeling displeased. Wang Jincheng had promised her something, after all.
“Captain!” Wang Jincheng exclaimed in surprise, momentarily forgetting about the injured beast as he turned to apologize to Lin Yao.
However, Lin Yao's expression suddenly changed drastically. Wang Jincheng froze for a moment and only had time to hear her shout "Watch out!" before she collided into him, knocking him to the ground.
Suddenly, a massive creature swallowed Lin Yao, who had been knocked down, and zipped past him in an instant. At the same time, Yao Beiluo quickly used his earth ability to wrap around the creature's body and disappeared from view as well.
Watching the two vanish in succession, Wang Jincheng panicked and hurried to search the spot where they had disappeared. He found that aside from a loose mound of dirt, there was not even a hole—clearly, that creature had escaped using its earth ability. The only beings capable of such an escape were high-level mutated beasts, and he knew this was beyond his ability to handle. He quickly sought out the logistics team leader to report the incident.
Upon hearing that a high-level mutated beast with earth abilities had taken two students, the logistics team leader was also startled and promptly reported it to the commander. As the information was escalated through the ranks, it finally reached Wang Sanquan.
"Uncle, you finally came! You must save the captain and the others; they were taken by the high-level beast while trying to rescue me. It's all my fault; I shouldn't have left the team."
Seeing his nephew in a state of panic and speaking incoherently, Wang Sanquan quickly reassured him, "Calm down. Uncle will definitely save them." The members of the squad were all top students from the First Academy, promising reserves for the future expeditionary force.
This was a matter he had brought upon himself; if something happened under his watch, not only would Tang De not let him off easily, but he also wouldn't be able to forgive himself. Wang Sanquan took this seriously; while arranging for high-level earth ability users in the military to track the high-level beast based on its traces, he also notified the warships in orbit around the planet to locate the two students.
Undeveloped planets lacked signal stations, so their communication methods relied on temporary channels established by expeditionary force ships acting as signal bases in space. Military communication equipment was slightly stronger than civilian devices, but its effectiveness was limited on such undeveloped planets.
Initially, they could pinpoint the location of both individuals and attempted to contact them. However, as the beast continued to burrow through the earth, the warships quickly lost their signal. It was difficult for technology to keep up; searching with abilities was even more challenging.
The delays caused by reporting up through the ranks wasted precious time, and soon enough, the traces left by the beast began to fade into the soil. This put their search efforts at a standstill.
Meanwhile, Lin Yao and Yao Beiluo were not faring any better. After latching onto the beast with his abilities for easier survival in the soil, Yao Beiluo had no choice but to bind himself to its body. The creature was large enough that being tied to it felt like riding on a small boat as it swayed with each of its continuous burrowing movements.
To check if Lin Yao was still conscious inside the beast's body, Yao Beiluo used a silent built-in communication device from military equipment to try and contact Lin Yao.
Fortunately, they were equipped with advanced gear from the expedition army, allowing them to move with the troops. They could communicate over short distances without relying on signal bases, using just two communication devices.
“How are you holding up?”
At that moment, Lin Yao noticed a strange beast preparing to attack Wang Jincheng from behind. In a state of urgency, she had no choice but to intervene. Thankfully, this beast preferred to swallow its prey whole rather than tear it apart; otherwise, she might have sustained serious injuries. Even so, being swallowed whole caught her off guard, and she nearly fainted from the foul air inside the beast's mouth.
“Cough, cough. I’m fine, just a bit dizzy from the smell.”
Thinking of this made her chuckle bitterly. After being swallowed by a star beast last time, now she found herself in the belly of another strange creature. It seemed she had an unusual connection with the insides of these beasts.
“I remember that Teacher Xie gave us an oxygen helmet in our gear. You should put it on; it should help.”
Lin Yao quickly retrieved the oxygen helmet from her space pouch and put it on, instantly feeling her mind clear up.
“Where is this beast now?”
“It’s burrowing underground.”
“Then shouldn’t you wear an oxygen helmet too? Yao Beiluo isn’t a soil-type ability user and can’t stay underground for long.”
“Yeah, I’ll put one on. Just don’t move for now; wait until the beast finishes burrowing before I tell you to move!”
As the beast continued its burrowing, Yao Beiluo soon realized they might have been taken deep underground by it. This discovery made him furrow his brows in concern.
