The high-ranking leader was not idle either, doing everything possible to attract spies and alien forces from various parts of the Yunmeng Star System, ensuring they could focus on constructing the jump point without worry. To achieve this, Yunmeng even sacrificed an energy mine, finally securing a year’s construction time for them.
With time tight and tasks heavy, and all hands on deck, Academician Zheng, the chief designer of the jump point project, found himself overwhelmed with endless tasks and unresolved issues. Just a month into the project, Zheng looked several years older than before, causing Yuan Bo to feel anxious.
Unfortunately, Academician Zheng refused to sleep at night, repeatedly calculating data. If Yuan Bo didn’t slip him a sleeping pill during the late hours to let him rest, he would likely stay awake for several more days until he could no longer endure it before finally collapsing into sleep. The human body inherently requires rest; even advanced ability users can’t go days without it. While occasional sleepless nights might be manageable, prolonged deprivation would surely affect one’s lifespan.
Having worked tirelessly for half of the Yunmeng Star System’s needs, Yuan Bo hoped for Zheng's continued health. Even though Zheng woke up the next day in a furious rage, scolding Yuan Bo, seeing the spirited Academician brought Yuan Bo some comfort instead of anger.
“Yuan Bo, if you ever pull something like this again…” Zheng began, but before he could finish his sentence, someone interrupted him with urgent news, leaving no time for further reprimands. Once busy again, Zheng would completely forget about the earlier incident and continue to delegate tasks to Yuan Bo.
Months passed in this manner; although there were always various issues with the jump point that needed resolving quickly, internal problems were manageable. However, external situations were unpredictable.
One day during a meeting discussing the next steps for their mission, someone burst in excitedly: “Academician Zheng! The Expeditionary Force reports that a high-level starship is approaching from a distance and seems hostile. You need to pack up and prepare to retreat immediately!”
Hearing this, Academician Zheng stood up in shock. “How could this be? Didn’t the high-ranking leader secure us a year’s time?” He was bewildered as to why another force would arrive at this moment.
Without considering anything else, Zheng took Yuan Bo and rushed to the starship’s monitoring room. Through the surveillance screens, they could see that massive starship approaching with an imposing presence.
The responsibility for guarding and ensuring the safety of the construction site lay with the Expeditionary Force, led by Yao Suming. Observing the situation unfold, he immediately dispatched a stealth ship to get closer and ascertain the origin of this starship.
Soon, news came from the stealth ship confirming that it was Dongyang Ming. Since it was Dongyang Ming's starship, there was no chance this would end well. Yao Suming immediately ordered the Expeditionary Force to prepare for battle and then set about gathering all personnel involved in constructing the jump point, preparing to have the starship take them away at once.
Looking at the fledgling jump point that had been established, Academician Zheng felt a pang of reluctance. "General Yao, do we have no hope at all?"
Yao Suming shook his head. "Academician Zheng, if it were a junior starship, we might have a slim chance. But against a senior starship, we have no power to resist."
As they spoke, the monitor displayed a brilliant flash of fire beside Dongyang Ming's senior starship. It was the stealth ship sent by the Expeditionary Force; it had been discovered by Dongyang Ming and destroyed.
Seeing this, both men felt a tightening in their chests. The overwhelming disparity in military strength made even a resolute leader like Yao Suming feel a sense of desolation. They could not retreat; knowing they were facing death, they still had to engage in battle to buy some time for the scientific personnel in the rear to escape.
As long as they remained, even if the forces in the Yunmeng Star System were exhausted, there was still a possibility of turning the tide. If anything happened to Academician Zheng and his team who were establishing the jump point, he would extinguish the last hope of the Yunmeng Star System and bear an unpardonable responsibility.
"Time is short; Academician, you should leave quickly." Seeing the pain in Zheng's eyes, Yao Suming urged earnestly.
Knowing that resistance was futile, Academician Zheng could only nod sadly. "General Yao, you don’t need to push yourselves too hard; retreat when necessary."
"I understand, Academician Zheng."
With rapid military action, researchers and various technical personnel quickly gathered on a warship for evacuation. Once they were aboard, Yao Suming swiftly assembled the starships into formation and prepared for battle.
As Dongyang Ming's starship approached, one of the Expeditionary Force's stealth ships was preparing to retreat when an enemy shell struck it directly, obliterating it. Yao Suming felt a pang of grief while ordering his remaining stealth ships to maintain their distance.
However, with limited exploration range for the stealth ships and the extensive strike range of the enemy's senior starship, it wasn't long before several more stealth ships were destroyed after his order was given.
As he watched the monitor screen nearly go dark with only a few ships remaining, Yao Suming commanded, "Send five more stealth ships over."
His aide hesitated. "General, should we just withdraw the stealth ships? That senior starship is coming closer."
Yao Suming shook his head firmly. "No! Even if we lose all our stealth ships, we absolutely cannot let their starship completely escape our sight; otherwise, we won't even know how we died. Continue sending stealth ships over!"
"Yes, General!"
The stealth ships of the Expeditionary Force were being dispatched one by one, while the enemy was systematically destroying them. However, the Expeditionary Force maintained good control, ensuring that the advanced starship did not escape their sight.
Fortunately, the starship technology in the Yunmeng Galaxy had improved somewhat. The stealth ships could now be operated remotely; otherwise, even Yao Suming would not dare to issue such ruthless orders continuously.
As time passed, stealth ships were sent out and destroyed one after another. Even the logistics of the Expeditionary Force, which was the most well-resourced unit, began to feel the strain.
"General, if this continues, we will run out of stealth ships," the logistics officer lamented.
"If we run out, we can requisition from other starships. Even if we have to deplete the stealth ships from several vessels, we absolutely cannot give up on surveillance," Yao Suming replied decisively.
After receiving the order, the logistics officer felt a pang of pain watching the continuously destroyed stealth ships; each loss represented a significant financial cost.
In the past twenty years, all internal construction in the Yunmeng Galaxy had been halted to focus on jump points and to comprehensively enhance military technology and equipment. Even so, twenty years was not enough for the Yunmeng military's technology to catch up with that of the external Galactic Alliance; they remained at a disadvantage.
