After everyone finished drawing lots, they gathered in groups. Some whispered among themselves, trying to gather information, while others quietly exchanged their lots. Qi Xiao tucked the jade token into his jade ring, faintly hearing the hushed conversations around him.
"I saw it; he drew the Azure Dragon token!"
"What number was it? Did you see clearly?"
"It seems to be three, but it could also be two."
"What is it, then?"
Ji Linglong and her companions were similarly scrutinized; every move they made attracted significant attention. Soon, Tong Liu stealthily gathered information and approached Qi Xiao.
"Senior Sister Linglong drew the Vermilion Bird, Zong Hua got the Black Tortoise, and Cheng Yufeng has the Tiger."
It appeared that the highest-ranked disciples were assigned to different arenas. This was not good news for the remaining disciples. Each arena had powerful competitors, leaving even less breathing room for ordinary disciples.
Elder Chang spoke calmly, "The competition starts tomorrow. You should all rest well and conserve your energy. The rules remain the same: stop at a point, no hidden weapons or poisons, everything else is allowed."
After Elder Chang finished speaking, he vanished, leaving behind a group of noisy disciples.
Qi Xiao and Wang Hu went to their room together. Just as Qi Xiao was about to close his eyes for a good sleep, he noticed that the stone by his bed was faintly warm.
The next morning, the sound of a gong echoed loudly. Elder Chang stood on the platform and began announcing the numbers. "Number one, step up!"
Eight disciples walked onto their respective arenas. In just a quarter of an hour, two arenas had determined their winners.
"Azure Dragon Arena, prepare for number two."
Qi Xiao stepped onto the stage, facing a muscular body cultivator with immense strength. Knowing he was at a disadvantage in terms of cultivation level, the body cultivator intended to use brute force to knock Qi Xiao off the stage. However, Qi Xiao was agile, dodging left and right as the body cultivator crashed into himself repeatedly until he was left dizzy and disoriented.
With a light kick, Qi Xiao sent him tumbling off the stage.
Throughout the day, the disciples in four arenas competed fiercely. As expected, the winners were Ji Linglong, Qi Xiao, Zong Hua, and Cheng Yufeng. Elder Chang summoned them forward for another round of drawing lots.
After they finished drawing, Qi Xiao found himself matched against Cheng Yufeng while Ji Linglong would face Zong Hua. Cheng Yufeng's expression darkened as he nearly crushed the jade token in his hand.
Yuhua's expression was equally grim, but she managed to force a smile at Ji Linglong.
"Junior Sister Linglong, you know my intentions. I really can't bring myself to strike you. Elder Chang, I willingly forfeit."
Elder Chang naturally agreed with an indifferent expression, but Ji Linglong couldn't hold back as she looked at Zonghua's deeply affectionate face.
"Forfeit? Forfeit what? Are you trying to tell everyone that you didn't lose to me because you couldn't win, but because you have feelings for me and chose to become a defeated opponent voluntarily?"
Ji Linglong let out a cold laugh and directly grabbed his collar. "Elder Chang, I demand that the competition continue! Someone forfeiting before even starting is a disservice to the efforts of the Sect Leader and the Elders in establishing the monthly evaluations!"
Before Elder Chang could respond, the onlooking disciples chimed in.
"Senior Brother, if you can't win, just admit it! Why act so sentimental?"
"Just confess; no one will laugh at you. But pretending here is just embarrassing for all of us!"
"Exactly! So many people have lost to Junior Sister Linglong; one more won't make a difference."
Zonghua's face turned crimson. What do you mean I'm pretending? Fine, since you all want to see my skills so badly, I won't hold back any longer!
With a flick of her wrist, Ji Linglong sent Zonghua flying onto a nearby arena. He stumbled and fell back against the edge of the platform, eliciting bursts of laughter from the crowd.
Ji Linglong lightly landed on her toes and raised her chin, looking down at him with an air of superiority. The contrast between them was like heaven and earth.
Zonghua gritted his teeth in frustration. This Ji Linglong was deliberately humiliating him; it was truly infuriating!
Seeing this, he let out a cold laugh and decided not to hold back any longer. He threw out a fragrant beast incense burner.
The incense burner trembled slightly in mid-air before bursting forth in golden light. In an instant, a shadow of a small mountain-sized incense burner descended from above, heading straight for Ji Linglong.
Ji Linglong's eyes sharpened as she leaped into action, cracking her whip with fierce energy that shattered the shadow into pieces.
Zonghua staggered back a few steps, struggling to maintain control over his objects. He coughed up a mouthful of blood, his expression waning.
Ji Linglong coldly stared at him and raised her whip again. In an instant, dirt and stones flew as a half-meter-deep trench appeared on the arena.
If someone were hit by that, they would surely suffer severe injuries.
Zonghua's expression changed as he hurriedly dodged. Realizing he had been cornered with no way to escape, he gritted his teeth and jumped down.
"Elder Chang, she's trying to kill me! Aren't you going to do something?"
Elder Chang remained silent, but Ji Linglong stood on the platform with a cold smile.
"Look at your cowardice! Just a few lashes have scared you into submission; yet before this, you dared to boast so boldly?"
Laughter erupted around them.
Elder Chang also remarked that if she truly wanted to harm you, you would have been sent for treatment long ago; how could you possibly be unscathed?
Zong Hua immediately realized that Ji Linglong had intentionally tried to scare him, wanting everyone to witness his embarrassment. His expression darkened.
With so many eyes watching him, Zong Hua found it increasingly difficult to stay. He turned on his heel and left with a grim face.
Cheng Yufeng furrowed his brows, a hint of disdain flashing in his eyes. "Elder Chang, I also forfeit."
Brother Qi wouldn’t want to test my abilities again like Sister Linglong, would he?
As soon as he said this, the crowd buzzed with surprise.
What? Did I hear that right? Brother Cheng actually admitted defeat?
No way! Although Qi Xiao had beaten him once before, it seemed more like a fluke. Why would Brother Cheng think so poorly of himself?
Qi Xiao smiled and nodded. "Of course, since Brother Cheng has admitted defeat, he is free to leave."
Cheng Yufeng lowered his gaze and silently walked away.
Ji Linglong touched her whip, and with this, it was clear that it was now a duel between them.
Qi Xiao clasped his hands together. "I humbly request Sister Linglong's guidance."
Before Qi Xiao could fully stabilize himself on the platform, a whip lashed out toward him. He immediately dodged in a panic.
This time, Ji Linglong was genuinely intent on hitting him; she attacked right away without holding back.
Knowing he couldn't confront her head-on, Qi Xiao subtly moved his fingers, sending a faint yet distinct ringing sound into Ji Linglong's ears, causing her steps to falter momentarily.
The audience below was excitedly unaware of the unusual occurrence.
In the next moment, a flash of sword light shot toward Ji Linglong's throat.
She stumbled back awkwardly, using her whip to deflect the sword tip just enough.
Touching her neck, she noticed a faint trace of blood on her fingertip and frowned slightly.
Suddenly, an unusual feeling stirred within her heart.
