Ji Wushang stepped forward, blocking Xue Tinghe's path. He swayed unsteadily, his face pale, and his once white clothes were now stained red with blood from a wound on his abdomen. Just moments ago, Xie Hong had struck him in the chest, causing him to spit out several mouthfuls of blood.
Despite being on the brink of collapse, he still forced himself to stand in front of her. Seeing this, Xue Tinghe's eyes turned red as she whispered his name.
"Wushang."
Ji Wushang glanced back at her, managing a weak smile despite his pallor.
"I'm fine."
This fool was on the verge of death and still insisted he was fine! Xue Tinghe bit her lip tightly, filled with regret. If only she hadn't listened to the rumors and come to Floating Island, he wouldn't have ended up like this. It was all her fault.
"This has nothing to do with you. If anyone is to blame, it’s those with ill intentions. Perhaps it was destined for us to face this calamity together! If I am to die, then dying alongside you isn’t so bad."
As she listened to his words, tears streamed down her face. She wiped her tears and stepped forward a few paces, positioning herself directly in front of Ji Wushang, glaring coldly at Xie Hong and his companion.
"If you want to kill him, you'll have to kill me first!"
The Taoist known as Baohua narrowed his eyes and clapped his hands in admiration.
"Look at this performance, Xie Chengzhu! Doesn’t it make me seem like the villain? I almost feel reluctant to strike."
Xie Hong tugged at the corners of his mouth in silence. "Let’s end this quickly to avoid further trouble. If you don’t make your move soon, I’ll take action myself!"
Baohua leisurely twisted open a gourd. "You see? You’re too impatient. The entire island is sealed off; they have no chance of escaping."
At that moment, a cold voice rang out, "That may not be the case."
Everyone turned in surprise toward the source of the voice. Xie Hong looked slightly taken aback before a glint of murderous intent flashed in his eyes.
"Ah, it’s you—this sharp-tongued brat! You’ve killed so many just now that I almost forgot about you. Now that you’ve come knocking on my door, it saves me some trouble."
Xue Tinghe felt anger rise within her; she wanted to shout at him for being reckless. Qi Xiao had barely escaped; why would he return? Wasn’t that just asking for death?
But then she noticed Qi Xiao giving her a knowing glance, as if reassuring her.
Xue Tinghe was momentarily taken aback.
Baohua Sanren wanted to continue watching the show but suddenly noticed that his apprentice was following closely behind that unfamiliar young man. He squinted his eyes and coldly called out, "Rong'er, come here now!"
Cheng Yurong trembled slightly, lowering her head as she continued to hide behind Qi Xiao like a quail. However, when Baohua Sanren called for her a third time, she bit her lip and finally couldn't hold back any longer.
"I won't go back."
"Oh? Are you planning to betray your master?"
Cheng Yurong's eyes turned red. "You're not my master! You just think I'm easy to manage and want to keep me around as your backup!"
Baohua Sanren's expression darkened further. "So, you are determined not to repent?"
"Fine, fine. Since you are so unwilling to return to my side, I will have no choice but to seal you inside this gourd and refine you properly. At least it will be putting you to good use."
Cheng Yurong was taken aback by his words, her face filled with terror as she looked at Qi Xiao. "Help me!"
"Senior, are you really so confident that you won't fail?"
Baohua Sanren paused slightly, a look of doubt crossing his face. "What are you trying to say?"
"I mean, look behind you!"
A shrill scream suddenly echoed from behind the group, sharp and clear like a child's cry, but it was accompanied by the growls of beasts.
"How painful! How painful! Someone help me!"
"No! You all die!"
"I will devour you all! Once I'm full, the pain will go away."
A giant insect lay on the ground, its body a mass of decay, struggling to rise unsteadily. With each step it crawled toward them, pieces of flesh fell from its body. But before long, those pieces would slowly wriggle back and reattach themselves.
It was in so much pain that it could barely think straight; all that occupied its mind was one thought: slaughter!
As long as it killed this group in front of it, no one would be able to bring it any more pain.
It opened its massive jaws and lunged straight at the crowd.
Baohua Sanren quickly chanted a spell, sweat pouring down his forehead in panic. To his shock, he realized that his control over the giant insect had failed at this moment!
As the insect bit down, he lost an arm but barely managed to escape to the side.
Covering the stump where his arm had been with a pale face, Baohua Sanren glared fiercely at the giant insect and gritted his teeth in anger. "You beast! Do you even know who I am?!"
You are meant to die.
Clearly, this person had promised to give it plenty of delicious food, yet they merely watched as a group of people continuously came to kill it. It died and came back to life, only to die again—what a torment!
These humans, these wretched beings, it would spare none of them, especially this deceitful human!
Realizing that the giant insect harbored deep hatred for him and was relentlessly pursuing him, the Wandering Master Baohua finally sensed that something was amiss.
He gritted his teeth and cursed, "Beasts are truly beasts! What a soulless thing! Had I known this would happen, I should have killed you from the very start!"
The giant insect chuckled gleefully. "Too late! It's far too late now; it's time for me to devour you!"
Baohua dodged repeatedly, his movements frantic and desperate. He glanced at Cheng Yurong and the others fleeing not far away and suddenly understood.
It was you who told him how to control the giant beast, wasn’t it? How foolish of me to trust you so much!
Now that he knew the method of control, a clever cultivator might just be able to turn the tables and find a way to break free.
Cheng Yurong bit her lip in frustration. At this moment, she could no longer hold back her anger. "You’ve been threatening me all along, saying I’d become a meal for the beasts. Should I thank you for that? You told me this method not out of kindness but to save yourself trouble!"
The more she spoke, the more aggrieved she felt.
These early-stage beasts were not so docile; one careless mistake while feeding them could lead to them going wild and devouring her in one bite!
Baohua had shared the method to control the beasts simply because he didn’t want to take that risk himself. Moreover, he only told Cheng Yurong how to use it but didn’t teach her any substantial content; some things she had figured out on her own.
Since you are heartless, don’t blame me for being ruthless! If you accidentally get swallowed by this insect, it’s your own fault!
Furious, Baohua had never felt so humiliated since leaving the Beast Sect.
"I will kill you!"
He attempted to fly towards Cheng Yurong but forgot that flying was prohibited here.
Just as he took off halfway, the giant insect bit down on him in one swift motion, chewing a few times before swallowing him whole.
He fell to the ground with a thud, half of his body still intact and not yet consumed.
This scene left everyone present feeling numb with fear, beads of sweat forming on their brows.
After finishing off Baohua, the insect shook its head and squinted its eyes as if savoring the taste.
