Qi Xiao arrived at the Bai residence, which seemed to be well-prepared for his arrival. A young servant greeted him at the gate and led him inside. The servant remained tight-lipped, not responding to any of Qi Xiao's questions.
When they reached a door, the servant finally spoke, "There are some matters at home. Please wait here for a moment."
Qi Xiao paced around the room, glancing about in confusion. What was the Bai family up to? Weren't they seeking revenge? Shouldn't they have just killed him outright? Was all this commotion because they found direct action too unsatisfying and wanted to torture him instead?
Perhaps his low cultivation level made the Bai family unafraid of him escaping; they hadn't locked him up but had only stationed two average servants outside the door to keep watch. As soon as he stepped out, the two servants immediately turned to face him. Though they wore smiles, their eyes were filled with vigilance and wariness.
Leaning against the doorframe, Qi Xiao slipped a spirit stone into one of their hands. The servant quickly declined, but his eyes were glued to the stone, unable to look away.
"Come on now, you can't refuse a gift without doing something in return," Qi Xiao said with a grin. "Let’s just say I’m trying to make friends here."
The two exchanged glances, hesitating. They felt the spirit stone was too hot to handle but were reluctant to let it go. One of the servants gritted his teeth as if making a decision and returned the spirit stone to Qi Xiao.
"Just give up on that thought. Once you’re in here today, you won’t be getting out!"
"Oh dear, you’re both misunderstanding me! Now that I’m here, why would I think about escaping? I merely wish to seek advice from my two elder brothers. For instance, Master Bai Shu arranged for me to be here because he wants—"
One of the servants frowned and interrupted, "What our family is thinking, how would we know? Just wait here as instructed."
"But I can’t help but feel uneasy. I hope you can offer me some guidance."
Without saying a word, Qi Xiao slipped another spirit stone into their hands. By the time he handed them a third stone, their faces nearly broke into grins, revealing their teeth.
One of them laughed and said, "We truly don’t know anything; our family hasn’t given us any orders other than to wait here."
"I heard there might be something going on with the family," Qi Xiao added casually.
Sighing, one of the servants replied, "What else could it be?"
The Bai family's rules were strict, even the servants had to adhere to the highest standards. The training of those outside was simply inadequate; only the training conducted within the household was truly suitable. Therefore, every ten days or so, some unqualified servants would be expelled from the estate. Once they were gone, new ones had to be purchased. The family would negotiate these matters with the slave traders.
Qi Xiao was surprised. He never expected that Bai Shu, a busy and important figure, would take such an interest in the daily affairs of the household, even overseeing the buying and selling of servants. However, the two young servants showed no signs of concern; instead, they appeared quite proud. The family might not pay much attention to other matters, but they were always vigilant regarding the people coming and going within the estate. They believed that all servants, regardless of their status, were part of the Bai family and represented its dignity.
As they discussed this topic, the two young servants puffed out their chests with pride. "Ah, so that's how it is."
Meanwhile, in the dungeon, Bai Shu was negotiating prices with a slave trader. The old man chuckled softly, his face full of flattery. "These are all prime specimens; we can't lower the price any further! Look at these sturdy ones—they're all Gold Cultivators!" He glanced at a few others nearby. Although they were merely at the Foundation Establishment stage and not very powerful, they had a shady background and were often involved in revenge plots.
Even if they went missing, no one would come looking for them, let alone trace it back to them.
Bai Shu took a sip of tea and hummed in acknowledgment without making any obvious response. The old man grew anxious. "Bai Zhenren, those sects have caught wind of things and are recalling their disciples. I truly can't find that many fresh goods! It's not just me; ask around—everyone's in the same boat."
Seeing that Bai Shu still hadn't responded, he gritted his teeth and stamped his foot. "One hundred high-grade spirit stones—this is already rock bottom! Ninety would work too... or even eighty..."
Sighing heavily, he added, "Bai Zhenren, why don't you name a price?"
Bai Shu snorted coldly. "With this quality of goods, how can they be worth so much? I can offer you at most thirty high-grade spirit stones!"
The old man's face flushed with anger as he wanted to demand an explanation from Bai Shu. However, when Bai Shu slightly revealed his pressure as a Gold Cultivator, the old man immediately cowered.
He mumbled under his breath, "Thirty it is then..."
Bai Shu waved his hand dismissively, signaling for the old man to be escorted out. As for those captured individuals, they were to be fed a softening powder and imprisoned in batches; the Gold Cultivators would be locked away in the innermost cells.
He called all the guards in the dungeon and issued a stern warning. These days were crucial, and if anything went wrong, I won't spare you!
The guards' faces turned serious as they bowed their heads in acknowledgment.
In the innermost cell, upon hearing the commotion, Lu Mingyue quietly opened his eyes and peeked outside. However, as soon as he did, he noticed Bai Shu turning his face away.
He quickly closed his eyes again, pretending to still be unconscious.
After a moment, someone nearby whispered a reminder.
Wake up; they've all left.
He Jian reached out and grabbed one of the guards' wrists through the gaps in the bars to check.
There's nothing serious, just an overdose of narcotics and a muscle relaxant. They won't wake up for a while. Even if they do, their spiritual energy will be sluggish and unable to circulate properly.
He Jian took out a bag from his pocket and chuckled softly.
See? Old man, I'm not completely useless after all.
He pulled out several porcelain vials, placing two of them on the ground and rolling them over to Lu Mingyuan.
Give this medicine to your people over there. In just one hour, these symptoms will disappear.
Lu Mingyuan's eyes brightened at this revelation.
If that's true, when those guards come back clueless to capture people, won't we have a chance to create chaos and escape?
This medicine could save lives!
Lu Mingyuan fished out a small pill and carefully stuffed it into one of the unconscious guards' mouths.
But that guard's lips were tightly sealed, refusing to open no matter how hard he tried. Frustrated, Lu Mingyuan suddenly resorted to force, roughly prying open the man's jaw. The brutality of his actions made He Jian and the others hesitate to speak.
With a loud crack, the guard's jaw dislocated completely.
Lu Mingyuan froze for a moment, feeling a pang of guilt.
No, wait—I'm doing this for them! Why can't they cooperate?
His gaze shifted to another guard as he pondered how to proceed when he saw that guard silently rising to his feet.
He took the pill and popped it into his mouth.
Brother, you don’t need to do anything; I can handle it myself.
Soon after, several others began to sit up straight as well.
