After hearing this, Qiao Yu felt heartbroken.
"Miss Ji, why are you so foolish?" he exclaimed. "This kid has no skills and no abilities. He can't even fly himself, yet he holds you back from soaring. Following someone like him will only ruin your future!"
He pointed an accusing finger at Qi Xiao, filled with indignation. "To love someone means to help them live better, to wish for their freedom, happiness, and joy. What you’re doing now—how can that be called love?"
Qi Xiao shrugged her shoulders nonchalantly. "What can I say? She chose this path willingly; I didn’t force her."
Qiao Yu felt as if he had been struck hard, clutching his chest in pain. Qi Xiao smiled amicably, seizing the opportunity to throw a provocative glance at Ji Linglong.
Ji Linglong choked on her words, her already twisted expression becoming even more contorted. "This Qi Xiao is slandering me!" she thought. "Am I really such a foolish woman?"
After witnessing their exchange, Qiao Yu became convinced of his stance. He quickly took out a disciple's jade token and handed it to Ji Linglong.
"Miss Ji, this is the disciple's jade token from Baiyun Palace. I believe that once you enter Baiyun Palace and experience the atmosphere of dedicated cultivation within, it will surely change your current thoughts and feelings."
He turned to glare fiercely at Qi Xiao. "As for you, there’s absolutely no way! No matter what, I won't allow such a scoundrel to enter and ultimately harm Miss Ji."
Qi Xiao was momentarily taken aback, swallowing back the words that nearly choked her throat. "So this is how we’re playing it?"
Ji Linglong held the jade token, swaying slightly with admiration on her face. "This is the disciple's jade token from Baiyun Palace! It’s so transparent and beautiful! Too bad some people can’t have one."
Taking advantage of Qiao Yu’s distraction, she shot a triumphant glance at Qi Xiao.
Fearing that Ji Linglong might fall into a romantic daze again, Qiao Yu hurriedly interjected, "Miss Ji, don’t pay attention to him; he doesn’t deserve you. Our Baiyun Palace isn’t a place just anyone can enter."
"Did you hear that? It’s not me abandoning you!"
With a snort, Qi Xiao turned to leave. "Is it just a disciple's jade token? Does he think I can’t get one myself?"
Rather than watching that woman, Ji Linglong, basking in her own smugness, he would be better off finding another way.
As the young man turned to leave, Ji Linglong felt a pang of anxiety in her heart, beginning to doubt whether her joke had gone too far.
"Are you really leaving now?"
"Young Master Qiao, thank you. We'll meet again another day."
Without looking back, Ji Linglong hurriedly chased after Qi Xiao's retreating figure, leaving Qiao Yu standing there waving his hand, feeling inexplicably desolate.
After a while, he clenched his fist and silently encouraged himself.
"Hmph, Ji girl just doesn't know how to recognize people right now. Once she enters Baiyun Palace and sees a broader world, she'll eventually understand who is truly suitable for her."
Ji Linglong chased for quite some time but saw Qi Xiao walking faster and refusing to turn back. Frustrated, she stamped her foot and shouted loudly.
"Qi Xiao, why are you being so stingy? I was just joking—mmph!"
Before she could finish her sentence, a hand covered her mouth, the warmth of the palm causing her cheeks to flush slightly.
Qi Xiao raised a finger to his lips and shushed her, then focused intently on what lay ahead.
"Mmm mmm mmm."
"What’s happening?"
"Mmm mmm mmm."
"Let me go! I want to see for myself!"
After giving her a quick glance to ensure she wouldn't make any more noise, Qi Xiao crouched down slightly and pointed ahead.
"Look, there's someone tied up in that group."
While "tied up" wasn't entirely accurate, the girl dressed in golden-red attire with a red veil was actually sitting in a small sedan chair carried by four disciples of Baiyun Palace. The chair had no canopy and only featured a seat with a backrest, allowing the two of them to clearly see the pearls adorning the girl's clothing and the ropes binding her hands and feet.
Below them were four Baiyun Palace disciples lifting the sedan chair, with several others nearby acting as guards. The girl twisted her body and struggled incessantly, causing the chair to sway dangerously and almost making one of the bearers stumble.
The disciple carrying the chair turned angry and shouted rudely.
"What are you moving around for? I'm doing you a favor by carrying you! If you keep squirming like that, do you believe I’ll just toss you here for the wolves to eat or the dogs to gnaw on?"
The girl froze in surprise and stopped moving, muffled sobs escaping from beneath her veil.
Nearby, several disciples quickly spoke up to calm the angry bearer, coaxing him for quite some time before he reluctantly calmed down.
He continued to grumble under his breath.
"You lot are such a hassle! If it weren't for the Elder's orders, do you think we would want to carry you around?"
After all, they were officially on the path of cultivation; having to carry a mortal girl who had just begun her journey—or hadn’t even started yet—felt humiliating enough without these girls trying to make things difficult for them.
The disciple grew increasingly agitated, seemingly wanting to vent all the frustrations he had bottled up over the past two days. Even the few disciples beside him, who tried to persuade him, were of no help. He spoke passionately, and suddenly felt a series of dull thuds in his back, neck, and abdomen, causing him to cry out in pain.
"Who is it? Who is scheming against me?" he exclaimed, turning his head in anger to scan the surroundings.
Qi Xiao immediately urged Ji Linglong to hide behind a tree. The disciple, unable to find anyone, could only silently swallow this humiliation.
"Brother, there's no one around here. Are you sure you’re not mistaken?"
With no one in sight, he wondered if a ghost was plotting against him. Clenching his teeth in confusion and frustration, he suppressed his anger and continued to carry the sedan chair forward.
Once they had walked far enough away, Ji Linglong finally spoke up, indignantly. "You were too gentle just now! If it were me, I would have targeted some major acupoints; I guarantee he would be in pain for days!"
"What if you hurt the person in the sedan chair?" Qi Xiao replied coldly.
"Don't worry; this group won't be smug for long. No matter whether there are dragons or ghosts lurking beneath the water, I will expose the filth hidden down there. I want to see what kind of creatures are hiding below!"
"A thousand years ago, they demanded human sacrifices and caused countless deaths. Even after a millennium, they still dare to stir up trouble and harm innocent girls' lives. Whatever lies beneath should be turned to dust."
Ji Linglong lowered her gaze, her lips trembling slightly with regret. "I'm sorry; I shouldn't have intentionally sabotaged things earlier. If I had seen this scene sooner, I wouldn't have gone against you and wouldn’t have caused you to lose your disciple's jade token."
"You can scold me; it was my fault for not recognizing the situation. I threw a tantrum during the mission and deliberately delayed our progress."
She wondered if she could still explain things well enough to Qiao Yu when they returned to retrieve the jade token.
Qi Xiao paused for a moment, feeling inexplicably embarrassed. "It's not that serious. Since this place has become part of Baiyun Palace's territory, there are bound to be many disciples involved in this trade. I can just find someone else."
"Your sudden apology is a bit unsettling," he added with a hint of concern.
