The voice carried a hint of mocking pity.
"You all work so hard to establish your families, don’t you just want better resources? As long as you are willing to serve me wholeheartedly, what you can gain will far exceed that of a direct disciple."
Cheng Yufeng gritted his teeth. "But you are a demon! What do you have to offer?"
"Hmph, those fools who destroyed my body and sealed my soul put in quite a bit of effort. Their remains still lie in that place. I can take you to collect some good things; it’s not a problem at all. There are even celestial techniques available, as long as you can cultivate them."
Upon hearing the word "celestial," Cheng Yufeng was completely shaken.
Celestials! For thousands of years, countless cultivators in the realm had toiled tirelessly, all for the sake of becoming celestial beings. Now this demon was telling him that there were celestial techniques to be found.
Cheng Yufeng's resolve began to waver, and he felt tempted.
In the small courtyard, this scene appeared in the water mirror, while the surroundings remained silent.
Elder Chang's expression was grim, his voice cold and stern. "I never expected that despite our precautions in the Xianyao Sect, we would still nearly fall into the trap set by the demon clan."
Though they could not hear the demon's voice, Cheng Yufeng was clearly speaking to himself about the demon's words.
Seeing this scene, the three of them could easily guess what had happened. It must be that the demon had used some method to infiltrate Cheng Yufeng's body and conceal itself.
When they saw that Cheng Yufeng was genuinely swayed by the promise of benefits and was considering harming his fellow disciples, Elder Chang was utterly enraged.
"He has been parasitized by a demon. I intended to save him, but now he willingly colludes with the demon. Such a disciple is beyond saving!"
Qi Xiao frowned. "Elder Chang, what should we do now? The tragedy of the Cheng family is suspicious; it seems any evil cultivators are merely a facade. The true culprit should be the demon within him. If that's the case, is there really any need for further investigation?"
Elder Chang stood up and waved his hand dismissively. "No, we cannot act rashly. Until I have discussed a strategy with the Sect Leader, we must maintain appearances. I will accompany you to the Cheng family shortly."
Qi Xiao felt that Elder Chang was being overly cautious.
However, Elder Chang cast him a sidelong glance. "These demons are unpredictable; it’s better to be cautious."
Qi Xiao was taken aback and completely dismissed his earlier thoughts.
Before long, Elder Chang made a hurried trip to Qingyuan Peak. After some time, the three of them left Xianyao Sect together and headed toward Shacheng.
The copper mirror shimmered slightly as it observed the three individuals investigating the Cheng family tragedy. Cheng Yufeng let out a sigh of relief, mixed with a tinge of regret. He was parasitized by the demon and had told such a lie; it seemed that no matter how clever they were, they would never guess the truth. It appeared he could only comply with the demon's wishes.
Cheng Yufeng tightened his grip, finally making up his mind. "Father, Yuling, don’t blame me. If you must blame someone, blame this demon; I have no choice." If what the demon said was true, once he improved his cultivation and became a powerful figure, he would surely find a way to restore the Cheng family.
The phantom remained silent for a long time. Unable to hold back any longer, Cheng Yufeng asked, "What’s wrong? Is there an issue?"
"I don't see any problems for now," came the reply. The actions of the three seemed unremarkable. The old man in the brown robe had gone to Qingyuan Peak; he wanted to sneak a peek as well, but Qingyuan Peak had set up powerful isolation formations early on, which made him uneasy. However, at this moment, the three were so focused that it appeared they were unaware of anything amiss.
The phantom felt somewhat relieved and with a thought, the image on the mirror vanished without a trace. Each use of this ability drained him considerably.
"Madam, you set up your stall on the street yesterday; didn’t you hear anything unusual?"
"No, this house is too old and the street is bustling; how could I hear anything?"
Elder Chang was pretending to search for evidence when suddenly he sensed that faint feeling of being watched had disappeared. He relaxed and smiled in gratitude.
The madam waved her hand and picked up a rattle drum to call out loudly.
When Qi Xiao and Ji Linglong returned, they stood before Elder Chang with sighs of disappointment etched on their faces.
"Elder Chang, we didn’t uncover anything."
"Neither did I," Elder Chang replied solemnly with a sigh. "It seems this evil cultivator has long since fled. Since we have gained nothing, we should head back."
Before leaving, Elder Chang looked at the two corpses with pity and waved his hand to refine them. He gathered the remaining ashes and placed them into jars to take back with him.
As Cheng Yufeng stared at the two jars placed before him, he felt somewhat confused.
"Elder Chang, what is this?"
I saw those two corpses left there unattended, and it was truly pitiful, so I brought them back.
Cheng Yufeng stood there in a daze, his expression wooden, as if he didn't understand.
Seeing him like this, Elder Chang's heart softened, and he sighed lightly. "Yufeng, I know you’ve gone through a great change and have been under a lot of stress, but you must always remember that you are a disciple of the righteous path. Some paths, once taken, cannot be retraced."
Cheng Yufeng felt dazed; he always sensed that Elder Chang's words carried deeper meaning. However, before he could fully grasp it, Elder Chang had already moved on.
Cheng Yufeng tightly clutched the two clay jars as if he wanted to merge them into his very bones and blood. The expressions of those who died tragically kept flashing before him, causing his fingers to tremble.
The voice of the shadowy figure echoed ominously, "Those who know how to adapt are the true heroes; do not entertain any foolish thoughts."
Cheng Yufeng's face changed slightly as he lowered his voice. "I understand."
After a long while, he managed to force out a smile. "In this life, my greatest desire is to stand out; no one can stop me—not even these two dead souls!"
In the small courtyard, the three of them watched this scene in silence.
Ji Linglong bit her lip in frustration. "Elder Chang, this Cheng Yufeng is stubborn and determined to go down a dark path! He’s being utterly ungrateful to his blood relatives and to your good intentions."
Noticing Qi Xiao's unusual silence, Ji Linglong nudged him with her elbow, urging him to speak. "What are you thinking? Why are you so quiet? Am I wrong?"
Qi Xiao sighed softly. "I was just thinking about what I would do if I were in his situation."
"What else could you do? If I were him, I would have reported to the sect long ago instead of hesitating like this."
That demon has threatened his life using who knows what means; are you sure you would have the chance to speak up?
Ji Linglong crossed her arms and pondered for a moment, realizing that it indeed posed a dilemma. "Well, there must be a way."
Qi Xiao stroked his chin thoughtfully and murmured to himself. "If I were him... If he were Cheng Yufeng, he would definitely find a way to stabilize that demon first before figuring out how to save himself!"
