Yet this time, as she looked at Qi Xiao's calm and expressionless face, Yu Miaoyin felt an inexplicable sense of unease creeping into her heart.
After a brief silence, she saw Qi Xiao smile faintly at her. Her heart lightened, but before she could feel joy, she heard the boy's thin lips part as he gently uttered two words.
"Fool."
In an instant, the atmosphere froze. Everyone widened their eyes, unable to believe what they had just heard.
Yu Miaoyin's mouth dropped open in shock, nearly wide enough to fit an egg. Her face flushed with anger, and she couldn't help but retort, "How dare you speak to me like that? Have you lost all sense of decorum?"
Qi Xiao clicked his tongue lightly, disdain evident on his face. "Isn't Senior Sister Wang standing right next to you? Senior Sister Wang, do I need to be punished for my disrespectful words?"
Wang Ruoyu choked slightly and finally replied with a hint of frustration, "No need."
Although the Xiaoyao Sect emphasized propriety and encouraged harmony among its disciples, this was more applicable within the sect itself. Interactions between disciples from different sects were not bound by such strict etiquette.
There had been many instances in the past where disputes led to verbal arguments or even brawls; as long as no one was intentionally trying to kill another and vital points were not harmed, most conflicts ended with confinement as punishment.
Disrespectful words hardly counted for much; at most, one would receive a couple of reprimands. However, the Xiaoyao Sect's rules fostered a culture of humility and courtesy throughout the sect.
It was quite rare for younger disciples to publicly embarrass older ones so bluntly within the Xiaoyao Sect.
As Yu Miaoyin listened to their exchange, her eyes turned red with anger. Qi Xiao leisurely continued, "Senior Sister, just a reminder: I am now a disciple of Qingxuan Peak and have no ties with your Qingjing Peak anymore. If you want to act like a senior sister, go ahead and do it at your own Qingjing Peak."
The implication was clear: Yu Miaoyin had no authority over him.
Who did she think she was to try and control him?
Yu Miaoyin's face shifted from green to red and back again in frustration. Finally, she gritted her teeth and pulled Ye Xiuyuan away.
"Hmph! I won't bother trying to plead for him anymore."
This Qi Xiao was so unruly; he might as well rot at Qingjing Peak for the rest of his life.
As Yu Miaoyin dragged Ye Xiuyuan away not too far, they happened upon several senior sisters waiting for Song Xiaoling.
The opponent was too weak and recognized their own inferiority; after exchanging a couple of moves with Song Xiaoling on stage, they jumped down voluntarily, conceding defeat.
As Song Xiaoling stepped down from the stage, she unexpectedly caught sight of two figures standing not far away and raised an eyebrow.
"What are you doing here?"
The crowd followed her gaze and finally noticed them. For some reason, Yu Miaoyin felt a sense of grievance. She ran up to Su Lingyue, stomped her foot, and said in frustration, "Senior Sister, you need to take care of Qi Xiao!"
The mention of Qi Xiao immediately stirred everyone's nerves. Su Lingyue frowned in displeasure, her tone serious. "Didn't I tell you not to seek him out? What did you do?"
Yu Miaoyin paused, feeling even more wronged. She stammered, "I... I didn't do anything!"
She recounted what had just happened, embellishing the story in hopes that her sisters would join her in teaching Qi Xiao a lesson or at least say a few words against him to ease her heart.
She waited for her sisters to rally together in indignation, but to her surprise, after a long moment of silence, nothing happened. The expressions on their faces were as pale as could be, as if nothing had occurred at all.
Yu Miaoyin was ready to shed a few tears, but seeing their demeanor made her rub her nose and suppress the urge to cry.
"Why does no one have any expression at all?" she murmured. "Even if you're not angry for me, shouldn't you at least be upset about what happened to Junior Brother Ye?"
Wasn't it infuriating that Qi Xiao had pushed Ye Xiuyuan around?
To her astonishment, Su Lingyue glanced at them indifferently and said, "Winning or losing is commonplace. If Junior Brother Ye feels discontented, he should work harder in his training. With strength, he need not care about others' opinions."
Ye Xiuyuan's face turned pale as he clenched his fists and slowly nodded in agreement. He lowered his head, bitterness etched deep within him.
Yu Miaoyin found it strange; while Senior Sister's words held some truth, they felt too cold. Remembering how the senior sisters had treated Ye Xiuyuan with indifference on Qingjing Peak only added to her sense of injustice for him.
"It's alright; losing is just losing. Senior Sister will take you down the mountain for something good to eat," she said with a bright smile.
Seeing Yu Miaoyin's cheerful face, Ye Xiuyuan managed a forced smile in return.
Once the two had completely disappeared from sight, everyone finally relaxed their gazes. Song Xiaoling furrowed her brow slightly, a hint of worry evident in her expression. She lowered her voice and said, "Is it really okay to let them be together like this? I feel like Junior Sister San's condition is getting worse."
Su Lingyue, with her head bowed, seemed lost in thought. In the end, she simply replied, "Let's wait a little longer."
The disciples in the great hall announced loudly that Su Lingyue had arrived. Fan Wuyou looked up, slightly surprised. However, he quickly donned a warm smile. "I've seen your performance in this competition; it was impressive. You will definitely secure a spot in this trial."
Su Lingyue cupped her hands in greeting and said, "Master, I have come to report something important."
"Oh? Has something happened with Junior Sister San?"
"No, it's not that. I discovered a shocking secret regarding Ye Xiuyuan, one that even involves Master Hanying."
Fan Wuyou understood her cautious nature; she would never exaggerate when it came to serious matters. The fact that Master Hanying was involved made him furrow his brows deeply.
He instructed the attending disciples to leave and activated the isolation formation in the hall. In a low voice, he asked, "What did you discover?"
Su Lingyue took out a recording stone from her jade ring and respectfully presented it. "Please take a look, Master."
In the water mirror, an eerie light orb emerged from Ye Xiuyuan's body, entering and exiting repeatedly while murmuring about heart demons.
Fan Wuyou's expression changed drastically; he nearly shattered the ancient jade table that had been passed down for hundreds of years.
This was alarming. He had been on high alert against external demons, yet before any chaos could arise from them, one of his own disciples had already caused turmoil and implicated their Master Hanying in the process.
This was one of the few divine transformation experts of the Xiaoyao Sect! If anything were to happen to her, it would undoubtedly harm the sect severely.
This child was reckless; how could she dare to inflict heart demons upon Master Hanying? Did she understand what that meant? They were essentially trying to ruin Master Hanying's path!
As he listened to their earnest words, it seemed they were even proud of their actions.
Fan Wuyou took a deep breath and quickly asked, "How is your master doing? Is there anything unusual?"
Su Lingyue's eyes flickered slightly. "There isn't anything majorly wrong with my master, but her headaches have become more pronounced lately. Moreover, her temper has been quite volatile these days. Only when Brother Ye is by her side can she find some comfort."
