They had not expected that Lin Yuan would actually pick up the case at hand and start talking about it.
It was a murder case in a locked room, or more accurately, a semi-locked room. Lin Yuan's professional terminology might not match theirs, but he could certainly explain the general situation clearly. The previous police investigation was not wrong in its line of thought; however, Fang had made a mistake in his deductions.
Lin Yuan pointed to a wooden board above and looked at Zheng Yun. "The most dangerous place is often the safest. Have you considered that the evidence might be right under your noses?"
The captain of the criminal investigation team frowned. "The floor?"
"If the floor had been pried open, the traces would be more evident; he couldn't possibly have missed that."
"Yes, the victim worked in construction, right? So if he were to take something out, it wouldn't raise any suspicion. The color of these floorboards is no different from other places."
These were all cases from the criminal system, and Lin Yuan didn't need to think too hard about them. Zheng Yun had already sent these photos to several people while speaking; they could clearly see the floorboards. But was there really a difference in color?
Not to mention others, even Zhang Yao from the criminal investigation team couldn't discern anything from the pictures.
"You'll know once you see the scene, but let's hold off on that for now," Lin Yuan said before pulling out another document from below.
Before anyone could gather their thoughts on this matter, they saw several new images arriving on their phones. Then Lin Yuan began again.
Zheng Yun, standing behind, noticed the increasingly dark expressions on the faces of those across from him and nearly burst into laughter.
Lin Yuan was truly adept at keeping them on edge without allowing them to say anything in response.
After discussing a few simple cases, Lin Yuan realized he might have spoken too much and paused awkwardly. "Sorry, why don't you take a look at the case you have in hand first? I can come back later."
"No need for that, Captain Zhang," came Zhang Yao's voice after he glanced over. Wang Yao then spoke up: "Since your consultant is so impressive, we probably shouldn't be involved in this case anymore. We'll take our leave."
This time they had come to the district only to embarrass themselves by confronting others directly.
Lin Yuan wasn't particularly interested in those cases; he only became curious when he heard it was a recent one. "What case is it?"
Seeing that Lin Yuan genuinely intended to take over this case, Zhang Yao couldn't sit still any longer.
Lin Yuan was quite the talker, but these consultants had cracked several major cases themselves, and offending them all at once would do him no good.
"Haha, actually, this is just a joke Lin Yuan is playing with you all. He just entered the district and can't possibly compare to your familiarity with the cases," someone chimed in, casting a knowing glance at Lin Yuan.
Lin Yuan understood the ways of the world; he wasn't foolish. With a cheerful demeanor, he replied, "Yes, I still have much to learn from my seniors."
Hearing this, the expressions of the few people around him improved slightly. After all, young people were expected to be more composed. However, before they could fully relax, Lin Yuan dropped a bombshell that left everyone in the room stunned.
"However, most of these cases seem to have been orchestrated by one individual. Do you seniors have any thoughts on that?"
Lin Yuan didn't dare claim he understood Haishi completely; as locals, these consultants surely knew more. He was merely leveraging their expertise. Little did he know that his statement sent a shockwave through the consultants' minds.
They looked at the dozens of cases laid out on the table—was it really all the work of one person? That couldn't be right.
From both the methods of crime and psychological analysis, it was clear that multiple individuals were involved. How could he arrive at such a conclusion?
"Consultant Lin," one of them said firmly, "everyone must take responsibility for their words. Are you sure about this?"
Wang Yao tapped the table, his expression now serious.
When it came to business matters, everyone was in sync.
"I’m certain. Are you worried that if this is discovered, it would mean there’s an extremely dangerous individual in Haishi?" Lin Yuan placed his hands flat on the table and continued, "If that's your concern, I can assure you that there is indeed such a person."
This individual had managed to manipulate the criminal system to such an extent that it suggested they were not just wealthy but possibly held some power as well.
Lin Yuan felt it was crucial to expose this fact. He didn’t see those who shared his criminal background as allies; rather, he viewed them as lone wolves like himself.
Just because this person was willing to expose their minions didn’t mean he would follow suit.
"What makes you think these cases were committed by one person?"
Not just Wang Yao, but everyone else shared the same thought. If there really was such a figure in Haishi and they had yet to discover him, wouldn’t that mean they were incompetent? That would be a true slap in the face.
The timing of each incident was almost a week apart; generally speaking, such frequent occurrences were quite abnormal, weren’t they? Moreover, all the deceased shared a common identity among their acquaintances.
It wouldn’t be easy to uncover this in a short time, but Lin Yuan had that time. There was a foreign enterprise in Haishi called Most International Trade, which had about a dozen subsidiaries, and a significant portion of the victims came from these branches.
Their connections were minimal; as far as I knew, Zhong Wei was currently employed at one of them and held a relatively high position. This was what Lin Yuan had gathered in the morning.
Due to the fact that the other party had changed shareholders and legal representatives more than once, he couldn’t quickly pinpoint his target within a short timeframe. Zheng Yun listened without hesitation and pulled up the information on several individuals in front of Lin Yuan.
Indeed. Upon seeing their company affiliations, Zheng Yun even felt as if Lin Yuan had guessed all this. So, these cases were all related to Most International Trade?
Wang Yao felt puzzled. What was the necessity of being so ruthless towards his own employees? Zhang Yao believed that since Lin Yuan had brought this up, the matter surely wouldn’t end so easily.
“Lin Yuan, do you know anything else?” His tone was very certain. “If this matter can be resolved perfectly, I can submit an application to the bureau to make you our district consultant immediately without going through the seven-day probation period.”
Someone with such keen insight and deductive ability like Lin Yuan would not be overlooked by Zhang Yao. Meanwhile, Lin Yuan smiled slightly; he hadn’t planned on leaving anyway.
“I only know this much for now. We will proceed from these individuals’ cases, and I will point out the subsequent evidence one by one.”
“Then can I hear what that case is about next?”
