Zheng Yunyin initially thought that Lin Yuan would stay behind to continue the interrogation. After all, the police station had made it clear yesterday that if he wanted to pursue the case of Zhong Anguo, he could. For now, it seemed like this was how things would be.
Lin Yuan tossed the bag he was holding into the trash can, his tone flat and unchanging. In truth, Zheng Yunyin was a bit surprised by Lin Yuan's decision. Wasn't he going to seize the opportunity to earn some merit? After all, in the police force, capabilities were what mattered.
Compared to others, she felt that Lin Yuan had a somewhat lackadaisical attitude towards his work. This was indeed a misunderstanding on her part.
"What do I need an opportunity for?" Lin Yuan thought as he prepared to take a sip of the soy milk he had bought. Just then, an inexplicable intuition struck him.
When he stopped in his tracks, Zheng Yunyin also froze in place, puzzled as to why Lin Yuan had suddenly halted. She then saw him turn his head and squint towards the window.
On the rooftop of a hotel several hundred meters away, a masked man with a sniper rifle was taking a drag from a cigarette, already aiming at Lin Yuan's head through the transparent window.
The scent of smoke wafted through the air as their eyes met at that moment.
"Discovered?"
The sound of the trigger being pulled was barely audible as the bullet shot through the air from hundreds of meters away.
Danger alarms blared in Lin Yuan's mind as he instinctively took two or three steps back and pulled Zheng Yunyin down with him.
Zheng Yunyin was caught off guard by the sudden tug and felt bewildered. What was Lin Yuan doing?
But when she looked up moments later, she understood why. A deep bullet hole marred the pristine white wall of the police station.
A bullet?!
Her pupils dilated in shock; this was a sniper rifle!
As a police officer, she quickly found a suitable hiding spot and pulled out her phone to call for backup. Judging by the demeanor of the assailants, it was clear they were not targeting her directly. Their only objective was Lin Yuan.
At that moment, Lin Yuan remained calm and composed. He took a glance at the windows around him. The corridor of the police station wasn't short, making it impossible for them to fire again in such a brief span of time. After all, he had already spotted them.
"Captain Zhang, someone just fired at the police station!" Zheng Yunyin said hurriedly after connecting the call.
Upon hearing this news, Captain Zhang remained relatively rational; incidents like this at the police station were not unprecedented. "Find cover first; backup will arrive soon," he instructed.
After hanging up, Zheng Yunyin intended to tell Lin Yuan to stay put and not act recklessly, but when she turned around, she found herself alone. "Wait, why is he running around at a time like this?"
From the direction the bullets had come, it was easy to deduce the position of the assailants. The person who had fired was definitely not an ordinary individual; they were likely sent by someone lurking in the shadows.
The situation inside the police station left those waiting outside puzzled. Soon, they saw a figure emerge from the building—it was Lin Yuan, the very person they had been waiting for all morning.
"How did he come out of the police station? Has he been inside since last night?" No one could answer that question as they watched Lin Yuan sprint in one direction.
If they didn't act now, when would they?
The sound of an engine starting echoed through the air as Lin Yuan quickly realized that a vehicle was tailing him. The only place from which a sniper could aim at the police station was the hotel building directly ahead. He needed to reach it quickly; otherwise, his pursuers would escape.
He slowed his pace, allowing the car behind him to catch up.
A sharp sound rang out as he turned his head to face the dark muzzle of a gun. Alongside it were several grinning faces.
"Go to hell," one of them sneered.
As soon as the words left his mouth, a loud gunshot rang out.
Amidst the screams of those around, they unfortunately did not see the figure fall by the roadside or any other gruesome sight. Lin Yuan had already dodged when he sensed the trajectory of the bullet, and he quickly jumped into the car as they opened the door.
Damn! Close the door quickly!
The people inside the car tried to stop Lin Yuan. One of them reached out to press a button, at least to close the window first.
With a bang! The car window shattered into pieces, and Lin Yuan's face was alarmingly close to one of theirs.
Showing a big grin, Lin Yuan said, "Sorry about that, just borrowing your car."
After saying that, he fully climbed into the vehicle.
The driver didn’t know where to look; he could only grip the steering wheel with one hand while preparing to reach for his gun with the other.
In the back seat, Lin Yuan pressed down on the still-open window and grabbed one of them, throwing him out onto the street.
His strength was impressive; pulling someone out with one hand was far easier than he had imagined. Unfortunately for the guy in the back seat, he didn’t have time to react before he found himself in a rough encounter with the pavement.
Just as the driver struggled to find his gun, a cold voice emerged from behind him.
"Take me to the hotel down there."
Unable to resist, he glanced back. To his shock, both of his brothers had guns pointed at their heads.
Swallowing hard, his voice trembled slightly. "We'll do what you say, just don’t shoot."
Is this how fierce police are nowadays?
They arrived at the parking lot beneath the hotel.
The man in the trench coat placed the disassembled sniper rifle into a small suitcase and casually flicked the ash from his cigarette. He hadn’t driven here when he arrived.
The response time of those dogs at the police station was quick, I thought.
He spoke into the phone, “I told you long ago not to act impulsively. Come on.”
I had lost count of how many times I sighed today, but at least the target hadn’t been caught yet. Just as he momentarily relaxed, the trench-coated man paused as he exited the parking lot and quickly changed direction.
A car was approaching me at a decent speed; it could be from the police station.
How could this be? Is it a police vehicle?
He could see that the situation inside the car was not simple.
“There’s a small road behind the hotel. I can’t send a car to pick you up there; you should know that. Come on your own.”
After saying this, he hung up and pulled out the SIM card from his phone, tossing it into a nearby drain before decisively discarding the phone itself.
A few people in the car had been detained by Lin Yuan after he spent some time gathering information from other officers when he first arrived. At this hour, there weren’t many people around, making the trench-coated man stand out even more.
“Stay put and don’t move.”
With that, Lin Yuan quickly ran towards him. The distance between them was not short; even if Lin Yuan wanted to warn him now, it wouldn’t pose a threat.
“Stop!”
He could only threaten him with a shout. Just as his voice echoed, the trench-coated man suddenly halted and turned around.
A dark handgun appeared before him, and upon seeing the man’s face, Lin Yuan instinctively dodged to the side while firing a shot.
Clearly inexperienced with firearms, Lin Yuan missed his target, and neither of them hit their mark. As Lin Yuan prepared to fire again, the trench-coated man—who should have been making his escape—was suddenly right in front of him.
