Inside the villa, Mr. Fang stared intently at the surveillance footage he had obtained, which showed Lin Yuan entering and exiting the neighborhood. The butler behind him had already arranged for the assassin to be placed elsewhere; if he were to be caught, it wouldn’t implicate them or expose this location.
"Young Master, Bai Qiushui has arrived in Haishi and is currently at the police station."
"Bai Qiushui? The teenager?"
"Yes, it’s said that he specifically came to challenge Lin Yuan."
Mr. Fang knew that kid wouldn’t be a match for Lin Yuan. He wasn’t worried about that; what he needed to know was something else.
As he pondered, a phone call came in.
On the other end, a masked man appeared on the screen, surrounded by a bucket of instant noodles and several cigarette butts scattered on the ground. The only illuminated area was where he sat cross-legged.
"Mr. Fang."
"What’s wrong? You can’t keep up with him?"
The masked man exhaled deeply, bringing bad news. "I can’t get into the police station anymore. From now on, any internal information will have to be relayed through your people."
"What do you mean you can’t get in?"
His expression shifted from relaxed to sharp as he fixed his gaze on the masked man, clearly displeased with this news. "Last night went smoothly; I was ready to resolve those cases, but someone from the police station came out of nowhere and changed the firewall."
In other words, their opponent was stronger than they were. Under such circumstances, aside from Lin Yuan, there shouldn’t be anyone else involved.
Mr. Fang tightened his grip on the wine glass in his hand. "I have a theory."
"What is it?"
The masked man understood that among them, only Mr. Fang held both power and intellect; the others mostly followed his lead. Many times, their actions relied on him, so he wanted to see how this situation would unfold.
"You three were discovered by me four months ago, right? At that time, there were no others present. Is there a possibility that someone arrived at that place before us and learned those things earlier than we did?"
"The existence of that organization is definitely not a coincidence."
"They weren’t chosen by chance either," Mr. Fang continued, believing that perhaps only one among them held the secret hidden within.
"I always thought I was the first to arrive; I never considered that we might have been used as stepping stones."
"Stepping stones? But according to the star readings so far, there are indeed five."
"Then there’s another possibility: we don’t meet their expectations."
The masked man understood this implication clearly.
This means that the emergence of this organization was not intended to lead them into crime; from the very beginning, they had misunderstood its purpose. Those skills were meant to combat criminals, to deal with them directly.
Choosing the wrong path was akin to stepping onto a road of no return, while choosing correctly would lead to rewards. The situation was clear: they stood opposed to Lin Yuan. Although he had entered later than they did, he was able to suppress them in such a short time.
The rewards given to him were different from those of others.
"Have you noticed that things over there have diminished?"
Those case files?
Director Fang rubbed his forehead with one hand; he had realized this during his last visit.
"I have a theory about this: the more exposed things are over there, the faster they disappear. Or perhaps, the more Lin Yuan obtains, the quicker it vanishes. Both possibilities could be true."
Director Fang glanced at the masked man, surprised that his mind was still functioning well at this moment.
"I will verify this point. Since he enjoys being around those police officers so much, I might as well give them another gift."
He believed that the more actions one took in response to their tasks, the higher their values would be; Lin Yuan was certainly no exception. If early exposure could weaken Lin Yuan's strength, then those of them who had been receiving rewards for a year would be sufficient to deal with him.
In Fang's gaze, several shadowy figures sneaked out of the community, and one face on the surveillance footage appeared unusually clear.
At two in the afternoon, an email arrived in Lin Yuan's inbox; his contact information was still somewhat open to the public. Lin Yuan had long stopped using email, mainly because it wasn’t necessary at the moment. However, seeing that email notification persistently flashing, he clicked on it almost instinctively.
Inside was a video featuring several blurred figures with pixelated faces. Even without seeing their faces clearly, it was evident that these individuals were acting suspiciously. Most importantly, they hadn’t exited through the guardhouse but had climbed over from a nearby fence.
"What are they looking at?"
Captain Zhang had just returned from a mission and approached upon seeing this scene. With years of experience in criminal investigation, he quickly sensed something was off about these individuals' movements.
"Don’t you think what they’re carrying looks a bit strange?"
Leaning back in his chair and replaying the video repeatedly, Lin Yuan managed to catch most of the details since it wasn’t very long.
Captain Zhang rarely felt like joking but remarked, "This looks a bit like someone dismembering a body and then packaging it up to dispose of it. The suspects I’ve dealt with before didn’t seem so guilty; they would at least maintain some composure."
After he spoke, instead of receiving the expected agreement, he noticed Lin Yuan deep in thought.
Could it really be a dismemberment case?
I’ll find out if I take a look at the neighborhood today.
Lin Yuan stood up.
Hey, hey, hey, you haven’t solved Zhong Tiantian’s case yet, and now another one pops up. Is there something targeting you here?
Zhang Dui keenly sensed something was off; otherwise, how could he not have seen this video when it first appeared on Lin Yuan’s computer?
But Lin Yuan was already halfway out the door, his voice faintly drifting back.
It’s normal for them to target me; at least they have some brains.
Zhang Dui paused, realizing there was some truth to that statement.
This time, Lin Yuan took his police badge with him to facilitate the retrieval of surveillance footage later. The footage of those people leaving wasn’t complete; it should still be there when they came in. When Lin Yuan arrived at the neighborhood, the security guard in the booth was still the same guy.
The security guard clearly remembered Lin Yuan and immediately patted the side of his own body, thinking Lin Yuan wasn’t in his delivery uniform and was probably just here to chat.
“Brother, sit down—”
Before he could finish his sentence, he looked up and found a dark badge in front of him.
He focused his gaze.
Police??!!
After glancing at Lin Yuan and then back at the badge, the security guard immediately stood up straight.
“Officer, are you undercover or something?”
“Why didn’t you give me a heads-up?”
Lin Yuan didn’t mind the way he was addressed and replied, “Don’t be nervous; I’m just here to check the surveillance footage. The footage from yesterday is still available, right?”
The security guard nodded vigorously.
“Yes, yes! Officer—uh, comrade, please!”
