This was their first time in Ling's office. Fortunately, there was enough space for them to sit down, and soon they heard Ling speak.
"I didn't expect you to meet my conditions. As for the remaining case, let the rest of you handle it."
"Huh?" Jiang Jinchuan expressed his confusion, thinking they would all be involved.
Ling replied indifferently, "I know you all aren't afraid of death, but it would be better to channel that energy elsewhere. You're not young anymore."
Uh...
While there was some truth to that, they couldn't shake off the feeling of dissatisfaction. Hai had conducted a detailed analysis based on the previous cases and would prepare a report for them to take away. How about that?
Getting such analysis in such a short time was unexpected for everyone.
"How could we refuse? We'll gladly accept it," they laughed.
To be honest, although the cases had been explained clearly, they often found themselves stuck at certain turns. If they had Ling's analysis, their adaptation would certainly improve.
"If there’s nothing else, you can leave now. Those cases are still on the timeline we discussed—just three days," he raised his hand and gestured three fingers.
The others understood his meaning and nodded before leaving. In the end, only Lin Yuan remained seated.
"What should I do?"
"You’re quite proactive," Ling said with a smile. "However, the person you'll be working with next isn't me."
"Huh?" Lin Yuan was curious; he thought Ling seemed quite capable, and weren't they here to solve cases?
"They should have mentioned that we have two divisions here. We need to assess your shooting skills to differentiate you," Ling explained while handing Lin Yuan some prepared documents.
"This is a recent case I'm handling, related to the other two consultants."
"Your task isn't until the afternoon, so take some time to rest and conserve your energy for tonight."
As Lin Yuan received the documents and flipped through them, he pondered over Ling's words.
"Tonight?"
If it was about tonight, then simply solving a case seemed a bit unusual. The information displayed wasn't like previous cases; instead, it revealed a route leading to clues about a criminal organization.
Seeing the puzzled expression on his face, Ling couldn't help but smile.
"What's wrong? Haven't you encountered anything like this before?"
Lin Yuan shook his head.
"I joined the police department just over a week ago. Most of the cases I've dealt with are murder cases, so I haven't really encountered anything like this."
"That's fine. You'll just need to work with Old Lu and Brother Feng when the time comes."
Lin Yuan was familiar with these two. Jiang Jinchuan had mentioned them before; one was named Lu Zhigang, and the other was Nan Feng. He had heard that both were quite capable, which was why they were assigned to criminal investigation and drug enforcement.
"So how will we get in touch later?" Lin Yuan asked.
"The officer will give you my personal phone number shortly, and you'll also be provided with a mobile phone to contact them," came the reply.
"That works."
After receiving the phone, Lin Yuan went out for a meal with a few others. The fact that he could join the mission made some of them grit their teeth in envy, but his abilities were evident.
In the afternoon, Lin Yuan didn't worry much and took a nap on his bed. As night fell, Jiang Jinchuan arrived and woke him from his sleep. He began to get dressed.
They had agreed to meet at eight in the evening, and after dinner, Lin Yuan took a taxi to the designated location. Of course, the fare could be reimbursed.
They had arranged to meet outside a well-known bar by the sea; although it was technically outside, it was separated by a street.
From a distance, Lin Yuan spotted two men squatting under a streetlamp, smoking. Their attire resembled that of unemployed middle-aged men, with a pile of beer bottles at their feet, giving off an air of despondency.
As Lin Yuan approached, they noticed him too.
Lu Zhigang saw the young man coming over and extinguished his cigarette, nudging the person next to him.
"Someone's here."
With that, Nan Feng also noticed him. He patted the spot beside him, inviting Lin Yuan to sit down first.
"Right on time," he remarked. "Since it's your first time out, it wouldn't be good to be late."
Lin Yuan casually plopped down beside them. Although he didn't smoke, he could tolerate the lingering smell of smoke in the air.
"So what's going on?" he asked.
"You little brat," Lu Zhigang replied with a smirk. "Who do you think you are to ask us? Who is Zhang Yao that he would recommend you so highly?"
In a light-hearted exchange, Nan Feng slipped a small knife into Lin Yuan's hand.
"Our target is in the bar, and since you're new here, you don't have a gun yet. Just use this for now."
After putting the knife away, Lin Yuan quietly asked, "Does everyone else have guns?"
He then noticed Lu Zhigang looking at him in disbelief.
"Who told you that? Our country's laws are quite strict; not many people carry weapons around casually."
Compared to the bureaucratic atmosphere of the office, it was clear that the two of them were much more grounded.
After a brief introduction, Lin Yuan had a general understanding of the situation. Among the seemingly ordinary vehicles surrounding them were actually their people. Once they confirmed the arrest, they could complete the mission in no time.
"Our outfits today won't get us in, but since you're here, remember these faces. If you see them, contact us."
The light from his phone illuminated Lin Yuan's face, displaying images of several wanted criminals.
If Lin Yuan hadn't come, they would have found a way to change clothes and get inside anyway.
"By the way, I haven't asked how skilled you are."
Lin Yuan blinked without a hint of embarrassment.
"I could easily take on both of you."
Today's youth certainly had no shortage of bravado.
They all had a clear understanding of their own abilities, and at this moment, they wouldn't speak carelessly. So Lu Zhigang replied, "Just look for an opportunity to check if those people are in the private room; don't act impulsively."
"Got it."
After responding, Lin Yuan tucked his phone into his pocket and headed toward the bar.
Having avoided exposure to the sun for some time, Lin Yuan's skin had lightened up a bit; at first glance, he looked presentable enough.
With hardly anyone paying attention to him, he made his way past the minimum spend requirement and was soon greeted by a scene filled with vibrant lights and music.
Men and women swayed in the center of the dance floor, their graceful figures twisting and turning, drawing in all sorts of unwanted gazes.
