There was no response from inside the door, so Lin Yuan knocked again.
After a few minutes, the door finally opened. Inside stood a man in a bathrobe, his hair still damp, looking impatiently at Lin Yuan outside.
"What is it?"
"Well, Mr. Xu mentioned that if you're still unwell, he could send a private doctor to check on you."
The man suddenly remembered that his excuse was feeling unwell. He felt a flash of embarrassment as he thought about the beauty lying in his bed.
"I’m fine. If I need to rest, please thank Mr. Xu for me."
"If you have any issues, you can let me know."
Noticing that Lin Yuan wasn't wearing any designer clothes, the man casually nodded and then closed the door.
Lin Yuan turned and knocked on the next room's door.
Knock, knock, knock.
The familiar sound echoed again, and this time the door opened quite quickly.
"Yes?"
A woman with dark circles under her eyes held a clipboard in her hand, clearly still busy with work. She glanced at Lin Yuan before returning her focus to her tasks.
"I'm sorry to disturb you, but Mr. Xu heard you didn't come by and sent me to see if you need any help."
"Mr. Xu?"
"I don’t need any help here. After I finish my work, I’ll arrange to have dinner with Mr. Xu."
Her attitude indicated she had the confidence to stand up to Mr. Xu; otherwise, she wouldn’t speak so boldly.
"I will definitely pass that along."
Lin Yuan watched as she closed the door.
He fixed his gaze on the last room. Unlike the previous two, this one could accommodate two people.
He knocked again.
This time, after about a minute, someone slowly came to open the door.
Without even looking at who was outside, the person spoke directly:
"Just put the food on the table; I’ll eat it later."
Lin Yuan stepped inside uninvited, an apologetic expression on his face.
"I'm sorry, sir, but I'm not here to deliver your meal."
Hearing this, the man grew irritated. He was lounging on the sofa with his legs crossed and replied bluntly:
"Then what are you here for?"
"It’s about Mr. Xu..."
"I already said I’m not going to that banquet! Is your brain a little slow? Just because he doesn’t have a girlfriend doesn’t mean everyone else is in the same boat!"
"Why are you being so rude?"
Lin Yuan glanced at the other person's face and noticed a resemblance to that General Xu. At that moment, the sounds of washing from the bathroom were quite evident. It seemed that the two of them were about to engage in something intimate.
"I'm sorry, it was General Xu who asked me to come take a look," Lin Yuan said. "Now that I've seen, you can leave."
He stepped out of the room, closing the door gently behind him. From the behavior of these three individuals, there appeared to be no issues. General Xu had already mentioned that he knew Captain Zhang. As for his son, Lin Yuan couldn't guarantee his character; on the surface, he merely seemed like a typical rich kid.
As for the other two, their reasons and actions also seemed unremarkable. Considering some details from within the room and the current time, one crucial point stood out: the smell of blood—or perhaps it was the scent of drugs. Lin Yuan hadn't detected any obvious odor of blood or drugs earlier; the only scent he noticed was a hint of perfume when he got close to the woman.
That was normal, especially in social situations like this. The man in the bathrobe likely had others in his room as well; Lin Yuan glanced at the small items on the table and suspected they were just out for some illicit fun. Ultimately, the most suspicious one remained the last person.
"Has he left?" asked the man sitting on the bed, whose wound had already been bandaged.
The person in charge of this operation nodded. The item now resting on the bedside table was no longer a box but a small collection case filled with jewelry worth nearly one hundred million. Such expensive items served as excellent disguises.
"However, I suspect we will encounter him again. A brief disguise can only alleviate his suspicions temporarily; if we truly want to go unnoticed, we must do so right under their noses. There's a saying: 'A single leaf can obscure one's vision.'"
After pondering for a moment, the man on the bed continued, "The one who injured me is quite capable and is also from the police department; be cautious when you encounter him."
"It should be that one from earlier." The person in charge closed the jewelry case and nodded.
There hadn't been any reports of such an individual in Hai City; as for those from that district's police department, only Zheng Rufeng could be dispatched—White Ling and others would not be able to come since they were already restrained.
As night passed, Zheng Rufeng sent over relevant clues regarding the deceased crew member to Lin Yuan. It was indeed not a suicide. There were signs of a struggle in his room, indicating he had been taken away by someone. However, there were no indications captured on surveillance footage, which was rather strange.
Either they were replaced on the way, or they took a different route. But the room was so small; where could the other person have gone?
Lin Yuan and Zheng Rufeng were both pondering this when the autopsy report of the crew member came in. It confirmed that it was indeed a homicide. If they wanted to do this, they could have been more discreet about it—who wouldn’t notice otherwise? It was clear that someone intended to kill.
Last night, there were hardly any people on the deck this morning. Zheng Rufeng suggested, “Let’s ask the captain to speed up; we need to get there sooner.”
It wasn’t that Lin Yuan didn’t want to catch the culprit; it was just that their manpower was insufficient. Perhaps once the ship docked, they could conduct a secret search and catch the perpetrator off guard.
“By the way, where did you get that sidearm?” Zheng Rufeng suddenly asked. “I don’t remember giving you a handgun when we left.”
“Huh? Bai Ling gave it to me for self-defense,” Lin Yuan replied.
“You brat, you’re not involved with my daughter, are you?” Zheng Rufeng’s tone shifted unexpectedly. Was it because of Zheng Yun? What kind of relationship could they possibly have?
“We’re just acquaintances; you don’t need to worry, Team Leader Zheng.” Hearing this, Zheng Rufeng awkwardly cleared his throat twice.
“Lin, it’s not that I look down on you as a senior, but if she were my daughter, I’d definitely keep an eye on her, wouldn’t I?”
“I understand. If there’s nothing else, I’ll head over to the police station and update them on the situation,” Lin Yuan nodded.
He knew what Zheng Rufeng meant. As someone without even a college diploma, if he really had feelings for someone who graduated from university, it would be quite a challenge. It wasn’t that he wouldn’t try; he just saw things clearly regarding their relationship.
