The other man's hands were thick with calluses, and his cold gaze revealed that he had likely killed before. When Lin Yuan looked at him, there was no hint of surprise in his eyes; the presence of a gun was what truly posed a problem.
"Give it to me," he said flatly.
The man seemed somewhat taken aback by Lin Yuan's reaction. Instead of immediately handing over the item, he put away his gun.
"Are you really not afraid that I might shoot you?"
"Afraid of what? You're not really a Green Serpent."
As soon as those words left his mouth, Lin Yuan stepped forward and took the small leather case for himself. He even opened the case right in front of the man, checking to see if it contained what he needed. After inspecting it, he nodded in satisfaction.
When he looked up, he noticed a hint of inscrutability in the man's eyes.
"It seems my boss was right; you are indeed an interesting person. Too bad you're not my target this time."
He had felt an urge to smash the man's head against the wall when he saw that arrogant expression, but he suppressed the thought and stood up.
"I've got what I came for; I’ll be on my way now."
"Surely no one is waiting for me downstairs?" he suddenly asked.
Lin Yuan, who was squatting down to tidy up the leather case, didn’t even lift his head.
"No."
The man nodded at this response but couldn’t help but show a hint of sarcasm as he watched Lin Yuan finish packing up the case.
"You're quite honest for a cop."
Afterward, Lin Yuan glanced out of the bathroom window and saw several police cars parked outside. He wasn’t sure if there were any Green Serpent operatives nearby, but if there were, they should be revealing themselves soon enough.
A man slowly descended the escalator in the mall. He wore a simple baseball cap, and his outfit was completely different from before. He hummed a little tune while typing a message on his phone.
Just as he finished typing a few words about completing his task, he caught sight of several people scanning their surroundings out of the corner of his eye. The man slowed his pace.
"Lin Yuan actually dared to deceive me?"
According to the plan, he should have exited through the fire escape and left under the guise of a sanitation worker in the parking lot. But given the current situation, it was clear that Lin Yuan intended to trap him.
He had only given that sanitation worker enough sedative for about an hour, and now this outfit was something he had taken from inside the mall. It seemed that Green Serpent hadn’t arranged for any extra personnel for him.
Just like their organization, everyone acted independently. With so many undercover officers around, he could only cautiously retreat; if he exposed himself here, getting caught would be inevitable.
"Lin Yuan, we haven't seen that man you mentioned yet."
A few idle individuals leaned against the wall at the entrance of the mall, keeping an eye on the situation inside as they replied.
Just coming out of the restroom, Lin Yuan replied leisurely, "You should have already been spotted by him. Are there guards at the fire exit and various side doors?"
"Yes."
"Good. I'll head to the fire exit first."
There were only two ways to exit the mall: several entrances on the first floor and the fire exit. However, the fire exit usually had very few people around.
Lin Yuan didn't waste any time and quickly made his way downstairs.
Below the parking garage, there was a large red door with "FIRE EXIT" painted in white letters. The lock on the door had already been broken.
"What’s the situation?" Zheng Rufen was positioned on a higher floor, ready to assist Lin Yuan.
"Nothing unusual so far. I’m not sure if he managed to escape."
Lin Yuan squinted as he surveyed his surroundings. The underground parking lot was relatively spacious, and his voice echoed slightly as he spoke.
"Is he moving that fast?"
Zheng Rufen recalled that there was no elevator leading directly to the fire exit, and these two locations were not in close proximity.
"He might be trying to leave from where two cars are parked."
"Alright, there are also two police officers over there. If you need help, just call them."
As he spoke, Lin Yuan glanced at two individuals nearby who nodded in acknowledgment. After greeting Lin Yuan, out of his sight, a garbage truck was being pushed out. The driver wore a mask and curiously glanced their way a couple of times.
The police officers also noticed this person.
"Hey, is it really time to be taking out the trash?" one officer asked.
The man nodded in response.
"What are you up to? Stealing a car?"
His voice sounded completely different from how he had spoken to Lin Yuan earlier; it was now somewhat hoarse and aged, with eyes that appeared clouded.
"Uh, no. We're just waiting for someone. Do you need help pushing that?"
The sanitation worker shook his head.
"If you help me push, I won't be able to pay you for it. I'll manage myself."
"Alright then, just stay safe."
During their brief exchange, the police officers had already scrutinized him thoroughly; he looked just like any other sanitation worker and sounded like one too.
"It shouldn’t be him."
"What’s wrong?"
Just as he finished chatting with them, another police officer noticed something off and directly asked in confusion.
"Nothing, just keeping an eye on the sanitation worker. Let's stay alert," he said, raising his voice slightly.
Lin Yuan, who heard this, quickly approached. He looked around but couldn't see the sanitation worker anywhere.
"What did you say about the sanitation worker?" he asked, puzzled. "Isn't it just a guy pushing a garbage truck?"
His eyes reflected confusion. "Is there a problem with that?"
It was only noon; it was unlikely that the sanitation worker would be dumping garbage at this time. The person they were talking about should be one of the Azure Serpent's men.
"Huh? Where did he go?"
The officer reacted swiftly, pointing towards an exit. "Over there."
Just as he finished speaking, a car in the direction he pointed suddenly started moving and sped towards the entrance.
"That's him!"
Lin Yuan quickly deduced that the other party likely had no backup; otherwise, they wouldn't take such a risk. He didn't rush to chase after him—he had no vehicle nearby and wasn't about to borrow someone else's car without keys.
"Zheng, the target has exited. The license plate number is—"
Hearing the commotion, Zheng Rufeng immediately ordered his team to pursue and block the suspect.
Watching the two cars following behind him, the man realized he might have to take a desperate gamble this time. He called Azure Serpent.
After two beeps, someone quickly picked up on the other end.
"That Lin Yuan has a cop following me. I'm currently on Donglin Street; send someone to pick me up."
The response from Azure Serpent was brief: "Wait."
