That evening, he held me close and said, "Marrying you really brings me honor."
"I was already tired of the one before you; luckily, she’s gone now."
I forced back my disgust and smiled sweetly at him. "From now on, I will treat you well and never let you get bored."
His expression was exaggerated, but the smile in his eyes was genuine.
"Oh? Then I should enjoy this."
After we got married, I took care of Gao Jian meticulously.
I did the laundry and cooking, served him tea and water.
I even honored his parents in his stead.
Gao Jian boasted outside, "Look at my skills; two women have served me one after another."
"Those people out there are waiting to see me make a fool of myself, saying my ex-wife was fierce while Xiao Ran is gentle as water."
"Now they can only be envious of me."
The wounds on my face healed layer by layer.
Every time I went grocery shopping, those aunties would deliberately push me, making me fall to the ground.
As they shoved me, they mocked, "At such a young age, seducing your best friend's husband—how shameless!"
"What family doesn't have a pretty girl? Why don't we see them seducing other people's husbands?"
"Little girl, are you so shameless? Does your mother know?"
They pushed and shoved me, looking down on me.
I didn’t care about what they said; I didn’t seek their help.
They were merely a part of my plan.
Gao Jian was going out for business again.
He wore a suit and tie, pretending to be a model husband, which made me feel nauseous.
I eagerly grabbed his arm. "Honey, when will you be back?"
"What's wrong? Can't handle just half a day?" He pinched my cheek and squinted at me.
“Xiao Ran, you wouldn’t have a dog out there, would you?”
I shook my head vigorously. “No, I don’t.”
Gao Jian looked at me coldly, clearly unconvinced.
I let my eyes well up with tears, my voice tinged with a sob. “I’m just worried about you, darling. I can’t bear to be without you.”
Gao Jian’s expression softened. “I’ll be back soon.”
“Then… can I become a tutor?” I looked at him pleadingly.
“With you not at home, it’s so boring being alone.”
Gao Jian frowned. “No.”
I tugged at his sleeve and pouted. “But I want to earn money to support you.”
“You’re the head of the household; you need to take care of yourself first so you can earn money for me.”
Gao Jian suddenly understood. “You want me to go out and do business?”
I nodded emphatically. “That way, you can make more money.” Gao Jian agreed.
So I started tutoring.
My student is named Jiao Feng; he’s a boy preparing for the college entrance exam this year.
I heard he had already switched tutors three times before me.
The moment I saw him, I knew he was trouble.
His eyes were filled with rebellion, wild and untamed, like someone on the fringes of society.
“How old are you?” He grabbed my hair and pulled me closer.
“You look about the same age as my sister.”
“Do you think you have what it takes to teach me?”
I calmly brushed his hand away and sat down at the desk. “If you don’t want to listen, you can leave right now.”
“I’m here to learn, not to watch you show off.”
“Sit properly and listen to my lesson.”
He tugged at the corner of his mouth, lounging casually as he rested one hand on his chin, looking at me with a nonchalant air.
In this state, he seemed unable to absorb anything, dismissing even criticism without a care.
I paused for a moment and said, "I once taught a very slow student. He struggled to keep up with the teacher, and his classmates mocked him."
"He told me he wanted to go to college. When I asked him why, he said he didn't want to be a janitor for the rest of his life."
"And in the end, he really did get into college."
Jiao Feng scoffed, "What does that mean?"
"What does that mean?" I echoed his question.
Jiao Feng looked at me, thinking my story had reached its conclusion, but I continued, "That slow student was my younger brother."
