He stared at me in shock.
"My parents favor boys over girls. I never had enough to eat when I was at home."
"They think I'm naturally stupid, not as good as my brother, so they wouldn't let me go to school."
"But I want to study. I want to go to college. I don't want to be a cleaner for the rest of my life."
Jiao Feng opened his mouth, wanting to say something but hesitating.
"Later, I got into college, but my parents gave my tuition to my brother and forced me to give up my studies and start working to earn money for him."
"I refused, and they beat me, threatened me."
I rolled up my sleeves to reveal arms covered in scars:
"This is from when they wouldn’t let me eat on time and beat me with a stick."
"Eventually, I couldn’t take it anymore, so I ran away."
Jiao Feng was completely stunned.
After a long pause, he said, "Since you got into college, why do you still want to marry Gao Jian?"
I forced a bitter smile. "Why can't I marry him?"
Our experiences were worlds apart.
He had parents but rebelled against their control.
I had no parents but felt like I had none at all.
"You’re not the same," Jiao Feng instinctively retorted.
"How are we different?" I looked at him. "Do your parents ever hit you?"
Jiao Feng fell silent.
"I'm going to teach you," I changed the subject. "First, let's go over the mistakes on this test paper; you can't leave until we do."
Jiao Feng sighed, picked up the paper, and began working on the problems.
I knew that a profound change had already taken place within him.
At least he is willing to listen now. Gao Jian called me, questioning why I hadn't gone to his house or done the dirty work for him. Fearing that Gao Jian would be angry, I quickly agreed to go over.
Gao Jian's parents had previously treated me kindly because they thought I was weak and easy to bully. Ever since I covered up the incident where Gao Jian raped me, they deemed me a fool, someone they could easily take advantage of. As a result, they had been bossing me around lately, treating me like a servant.
I didn't refuse because I knew I couldn't push them too hard. As soon as I stepped into Gao Jian's house, mother Gao slapped me across the face, making my vision blur. "You filthy whore, acting all high and mighty!" she shouted. "Do you really think you're the young mistress of the Gao family?"
"I'll tell you this: you're nothing but a worthless piece of trash. It's your good fortune that my son even wants you!" she continued. "You didn't make dinner today; hurry up and do it!"
"First, bring me some water for my feet, then wash my son's dirty clothes. Clean the house inside and out; if it's not spotless, you won't be allowed to sleep!"
I covered my swollen cheek and murmured, "Gao Jian asked me to pack his things tomorrow..."
"Are you daring to talk back to me?" mother Gao kicked me hard. "Oh, so you want to be beaten, do you?"
I lowered my head even more. "No, I just thought mopping would be faster than kneeling and scrubbing..."
"Shut up!" mother Gao barked. "You kneel on the floor and scrub right now!"
"And that filthy braid of yours is disgusting; get it cut off!"
A cold snort came from father Gao nearby. I bit my lip and knelt on the cold floor, taking out the cleaning solution and scrubbing carefully.
mother Gao pointed at a stain on the floor. "Why isn't this clean?"
"Rub this spot ten times!"
I hesitated for a moment, but ultimately complied.
That night, I skipped dinner and returned home at one in the morning. My stomach ached slightly, and an inexplicable sense of anxiety washed over me as I recalled that my period hadn’t come in a while. A vague suspicion began to form in my mind.
I bought a pregnancy test and went to the bathroom to check.
Two lines.
I was really pregnant.
