“No,” Jiao Feng insisted stubbornly. “If something happens to you while you’re with me, I’ll feel guilty for the rest of my life.”
“You’re too good to me,” I said, lowering my gaze. “You don’t owe me anything.”
“Nonsense,” Jiao Feng retorted. “You’ve taught me so much and helped me. You’ve been very kind.”
That night, Jiao Feng stayed by my side.
The next day, he insisted on seeing me off.
On the way, we ran into Gao Jian, who was returning home.
Gao Jian looked at us suspiciously. “Who is he?”
I replied calmly, “My student.”
Gao Jian’s expression softened a bit as he said to Jiao Feng, “You should head back now. I need to spend some time with my wife.”
Jiao Feng clenched his fist but didn’t say anything.
I urged, “Jiao Feng, let’s go.”
“Oh,” Jiao Feng responded quietly.
When we got home, Gao Jian was particularly affectionate towards me.
I couldn’t help but sneer inwardly. Affectionate? What about last night? Where was he then?
However, I wasn’t in the mood to argue with him.
I was utterly exhausted, both physically and mentally.
When Gao Jian tried to touch me, I didn’t resist.
Gao Jian didn’t come home that night.
For once, I managed to get a good night’s sleep.
The next morning, I woke up early and made breakfast.
Suddenly, the doorbell rang.
I opened the door and froze. "Jiao Feng? What are you doing here?"
Jiao Feng's eyes were dark, and her face was filled with concern. " Teacher Ma, how are you?"
"I'm fine," I smiled. "Why didn't you go to class?"
Jiao Feng raised the breakfast she was holding and reached out her hand toward me.
I instinctively took a step back.
Jiao Feng bit her lip and said softly, "I brought you breakfast."
"Thank you." I took the breakfast and placed it on the table.
Jiao Feng seemed hesitant to speak.
Curiously, I asked, "What's wrong?"
She shook her head. "It's nothing."
Just as I opened the breakfast, Jiao Feng gasped, " Teacher Ma, your neck..."
I instinctively touched my neck and felt the bruises there.
I smiled lightly and said nonchalantly, "It's nothing."
In the next moment, Jiao Feng yanked Gao Jian out of bed and landed a heavy punch on his face.
"What are you doing?" I exclaimed in shock, quickly grabbing Jiao Feng.
With tears in her eyes, Jiao Feng said, "He treats you like this, and you're still protecting him?"
"He's my husband," I sighed. "It has nothing to do with you."
Jiao Feng looked at me in disbelief. " Teacher Ma, how... how have you changed?"
Gao Jian quickly realized Jiao Feng's identity.
Her father was the director.
Gao Jian immediately changed his attitude, becoming overly polite to Jiao Feng. He tried to hint that he wanted her to speak to her father on his behalf to get some leniency for his business dealings.
I despised him.
Yet, I still went ahead and did it.
That night, Gao Jian returned home drunk.
I helped him to the bed and suddenly asked, “How did Tong Qianqian die?”
Gao Jian paused for a moment, slurring, “How would I know?”
“You don’t know?” I stared at him. “You really don’t know?”
Gao Jian squinted his eyes. “What do you mean?”
“What I mean is something you’re very clear about,” I said coldly.
“Gao Jian, you were at home that day. You saw it, didn’t you?”
Gao Jian remained silent for a long time before he laughed. “Yes, I saw it.
I watched Qianqian die right before my eyes, but I didn’t save her.”
I felt as if I had been struck by lightning, staring at him in disbelief. “What did you say?”
Gao Jian laughed heartily. “I watched her get hit by the wardrobe.
I watched her cry out in pain. I watched her plead with me to save her, but I didn’t.”
I went wild and started to fight him.
“You beast! You beast!”
“I’m going to kill you! I’m going to kill you!”
Gao Jian was drunk, and I had little strength left; soon we were at a life-and-death standoff.
He was choking me to the point of near suffocation.
