But in the end, I am not a fortunate person.
Tong Qianqian was right; I would live a happy life. However, such a life also signifies an end. I am ultimately an ominous person. I can no longer bring misfortune to others.
As I walked with my head down, I suddenly bumped into someone. The person grabbed my arm. Instinctively, I wanted to run, but he held on tightly.
“Teacher Ma!”
I turned my head and saw Jiao Feng’s surprised expression. I lowered my gaze.
“Long time no see.”
But Jiao Feng wouldn’t let go of my arm. “Teacher Ma, it’s been so long!”
“Let go of me,” I struggled slightly.
“I won’t let go!” Jiao Feng held on firmly. “Teacher Ma, why are you leaving?”
“I don’t want to bring you misfortune anymore.” I forced a bitter smile. “I am an ill-fated person; everyone around me suffers. My mother is dead, my father is dead, and my brother is dead. Now, Gao Jian is also close to dying. Don’t you know?”
“Teacher Ma, it’s not your fault!” Jiao Feng looked at me earnestly. “Teacher Ma, why did you leave without saying goodbye? Do you know I’ve been looking for you?”
“Looking for me for what?” I forced a bleak smile. “I have no home anymore. Wherever I go, that’s where my home is.”
“Teacher Ma, give me a chance.” Jiao Feng gazed at me with determination. “As long as you give me a chance, I will help you step out of the shadows.”
“Jiao Feng…” I looked at him, my heart filled with complicated emotions.
I need time.
"Today is the anniversary of my mother's passing," Jiao Feng said, looking at me. "I haven't had a mother since I was little. My dad married her just for the sake of a union. He doesn't care about us at all."
I was taken aback.
No wonder his parents were so resistant when I first approached Jiao Feng for tutoring. No wonder he was so rebellious back then. It turned out he had never felt parental love growing up.
"But my mom loved me very much," Jiao Feng continued, gazing at me. "She gave birth to me so that I could live well."
"Jiao Feng..." I didn't know what to say.
" Teacher Ma, give me a chance," Jiao Feng said, looking into my eyes. "You are not an ominous person. You are the strongest and gentlest woman I've ever met."
"Really?" I forced a smile, "But they all say I'm a bad woman."
"That's because they haven't seen how good you really are," Jiao Feng replied, his gaze steady. " Teacher Ma, do you remember what you once told me? You said you have a younger brother who is very cute. You said you would do anything for him. You said you want to live well."
"But I can't..." I covered my face, tears streaming through my fingers.
"You can," Jiao Feng held my hand tightly. " Teacher Ma, you can definitely do it."
"But..." I sobbed, "I'm really scared..."
"Don't be afraid," Jiao Feng squeezed my hand reassuringly. "Do you know? During my most rebellious time, it was you who stood by me. You gave me the motivation to keep going. Teacher Ma, you are a truly wonderful person. Don't give up on yourself."
"But..." I shook my head through tears, "I really don't know what to do..."
“ Teacher Ma, do you remember what you once told me? You said that I should live bravely. You said that I should become stronger so that I could protect the ones I want to protect.”
Jiao Feng looked at me and said, “ Teacher Ma, you can definitely do it.”
“Really?” I looked up at Jiao Feng.
“Really,” Jiao Feng nodded earnestly.
“Then I’ll give it a try.” I finally nodded in agreement.
Jiao Feng smiled.
His smile was like a ray of sunshine.
In that moment, I felt a glimmer of hope.
I thought, perhaps I really can live bravely.
Perhaps I can truly break free from this shadow.
Perhaps I can live a better life.
