Wang San glanced at Sha Zhu, who angrily ordered him to wash the vegetables.
"What are you washing? Can this be served to the workers? Wash it again!"
"This is your first time washing vegetables? You've washed them so many times that you've ruined the leaves! This is a serious waste! Do you even want to keep your job?"
Sha Zhu stood behind Wang San, watching him wash the vegetables. Wang San felt tears welling up; if it weren't for the fact that his family depended on his salary to survive, he would have thrown the vegetables in Sha Zhu's face and shouted that he was done, telling him to wash them himself and do whatever he wanted with them!
Now, the people in the back kitchen dared not look at Sha Zhu any longer; they began to sympathize with Wang San.
In the courtyard of Yu'er Hutong, the Sun family was anxiously watching their daughter wake up. "Daughter, how are you? Why did you do something so foolish? It was just a broken engagement! Even if you can't get married, your parents will support you for life. Why would you jump into the river?"
Sun Yuwei looked at her haggard parents, tears streaming down her face. "I'm sorry, Mom and Dad. I shouldn't have acted so rashly. All it does is give those who laugh at our family more reason to mock us!"
"By the way, Mom and Dad, how is that person who saved me a few days ago? I saw him get lime thrown in his eyes!"
Sun Guoqiang and his wife exchanged troubled glances before answering their daughter. "Dear, when you first had your incident, your father went to the police station to inquire about it. The young man who saved you... he lost his eyesight."
"What? How could this happen?" Sun Yuwei was shocked by the news!
After a few minutes of contemplation, she said to her parents, "Mom and Dad, that person ended up like this because he saved me. Please ask around for him; if he is willing, I would marry him and take care of him for life!"
Sun Guoqiang and his wife were stunned by their daughter's words. They knew their daughter had a kind heart but never expected her to say such things!
Her mother quickly advised her, "Dear, even though you were dumped by that scoundrel Yin Zhiqiang and he ruined your reputation, there's no need to marry a blind man! Although he saved you, we can just give his family some money!"
Sun Yuwei closed her eyes in pain. "Mom and Dad, as the ancients say, one should repay a life-saving grace with a spring of water. That man lost his eyesight because he saved me; I am not someone who forgets kindness. Besides, how much money could ever compensate for a pair of eyes?
Also, my reputation has been completely ruined by that Yin fellow! Do you think I can still marry into a good family? Rather than that, I would prefer to marry the one who saved me. If he could help me in such a situation, I believe he is a good person!"
Hearing their daughter's words made Sun's mother grit her teeth in anger towards Yin Zhiqiang. The Yin family lived next door to them; both families had men working at the same factory. Yin Zhiqiang and Sun Yuwei were only a month apart in age and had grown up together!
As they grew older, they naturally developed feelings for each other, and both families were happy about their union. After they graduated from high school, their marriage was arranged!
With only two months left until their wedding, Sun Yuwei encountered some thugs while out one day; fortunately, Wang Jiefang happened to pass by and rescued her. Although Sun Yuwei had not been harmed physically, word spread through the neighborhood that she had been cornered by four men and mistreated—rumors even painted vivid details!
Before Sun Yuwei could figure out what was happening, her fiancé Yin Zhiqiang came with his parents to demand an end to their engagement because she was no longer pure enough to marry into the Yin family!
Thus began Sun Yuwei's downfall; people outside began to point fingers at her with malicious words. In despair, she jumped into the river but was saved just in time by patrolling officers! Although she was rescued promptly, she fainted from all the emotional turmoil and only woke up a day later.
In the Xiang family, Sun Mu gritted her teeth and said, "Daughter, you have no idea. I heard that that scoundrel from the Yin family is with the daughter of the deputy factory director! That woman from the Yin family has been overjoyed these past few days! She goes around telling everyone that her son is so capable that even the factory director's daughter is eager to marry him!"
Upon hearing this, Sun Yuwei immediately understood. The rumors circulating about her must have been spread by her former fiancé. How cruel of him! If he wanted to climb the social ladder, he could have done it openly by breaking off their engagement instead of resorting to such dirty tactics to ruin her reputation.
With this realization, Sun Yuwei felt utterly disillusioned with her former fiancé. She calmly said to her mother, "Mom, we should be grateful. Grateful that we saw the true colors of the Yin family early on. Otherwise, if I had married into that family, it would have been the beginning of my suffering!"
Sun Guoqiang and his wife agreed with their daughter. "How could we not see that they are all heartless and ungrateful? Looking back, we were truly blind!"
As they lamented their previous naivety, Sun Mu worriedly asked her daughter, "Daughter, do you really want to marry that man? If you're concerned about your reputation, we could always marry you off far away. If it's far enough, surely he won't hear those rumors?"
Sun Yuwei let out a bitter laugh. "Mom, you're thinking too simply. No matter how far I marry, won't my new husband have to come back to our home eventually? Can you guarantee that our neighbors won't say anything to him?"
Hearing this, Sun Mu's expression changed as well. Finally, she sighed helplessly. "Ah! It's all that cursed Yin family's fault! I curse them to never find peace! Daughter, since you've made up your mind, your father and I won't say anything more. We'll go find a matchmaker and see if that young man who could save you is married or not!"
Sun Mu hoped that the young man who might save her daughter was already married; that way she wouldn't have to worry about her daughter marrying a fool!
Her poor daughter, so beautiful and delicate like jade—how did she end up in such a predicament?
